They rolled out of Independence early enough to not get caught in the mountains in winter.
The Donner party got caught in the snow because they had been sold a guide to a trail that didn't exist, and wasted over 2 weeks across Wyoming thinking the shorter route would save them at least a week. It cost them a couple more weeks trying to negotiate the nonexistent trail.

Ohhhhhh my goodness! I felt the anxiety, driving in the whiteout!
Surviving the Wyoming winters is so hard. I am from Washington State, and I prefer the sweet rain. Hihi

Following the trail west from Ogallala is a trip I've been wanting to do since I moved to Nebraska

Dang. In the winter time immigrants traveling the Oregon Trail knew they would not make it through wyoming in the winter time. A group of Mormons left Independence MO too late in the season and got caught up with a blizzard near Devils Gate and some.of them died. So the wagon trains avoided the trail in the winter time.

My understanding is that, unlike we see in hold Hollywood flicks, Native American attacks on pioneers on the trail rarely took place. More often they helped.
