Nobunaga stopped by Kyoto on the way to the Chugoku region to assist Hideyoshi in the Takamatsu siege. He had a handful of men and pages with him so Mitsuhide took advantage of that and instead of leading his 13000 men to assist Hideyoshi, he took them to Kyoto on the pretense that Nobunaga wanted a military parade and assaulted Honnoji in the wee hours of June 21 1582. 13 days later, the Hashiba army crushed the Akechi army and Hideyoshi had avenged his lord.

Nobunaga was not in Kyoto to ask to become shogun. There is no evidence that he intended to become shogun, although it is not possible to prove he did not either. Most scholars do not think he did though. At the time of the Honnoji incident, Nobunaga was in Kyoto waiting to amass his forces to move west in order to aid Toyotomi Hideyoshi in his campaign against the Mori.

Nobunaga was an awful human being who slaughtered men, women and children and anyone who stood in his way or anyone who's lives he deemed lesser than his own. Needless to say there's a reason he was nicknamed "The Demon King" 🤷🤷 he tried to overthrow the shogun, he tried conquering Japan, he killed his own men over the smallest of things, he burned entire villages to the ground and killed anyone who survived whether they were men, women or children, he personally tortured or watched prisoners be tortured for amusement, he burned down and destroyed many sacred temples to his own people

@@neo_ericjuarez61 bcoz minamoto established the first bakufu, it was generally expected tradition that bakufu can not established, meaning that emperor do not bestow the title of shogun, without somesort of bloodline with minamoto clan. Oda was said to be decendants of taira, still it is quite sure that nobunaga, would have got the title if he wouldv want it.
Hideyoshi on the other hand wanted the title, but did not get it, precicely due to hes low birth. Wich why emperor gave him the title Taiko. In practicase there werent any difference, power was the crucial factor. Wich why hideyoshis power were precicely same as shoguns.
Tokugawa was In the end awarded the title, due to hes bloodline with minamoto clan.
There exist some disagreement presently, among the academics, regarding this issue. But generally its established view currently, and at least historically. That decendance from minamoto was must, in order to establish bakufu as a shogun
