The Ultimate Van Build Journey:
In Season 1 of the van build, we stripped off the old DPD stickers, rust-proofed the entire van, painted it our favorite matte grey color, redesigned the cab, planned our van's design / layout, created our epic water tanks, built our custom panorama roof windows, installed new wheels, & installed an insulated floor! PHEW! Building a home is something else! bit.ly/LM_SEASON1
Then Season 2 of the van build rolled around, and with our workshop's renovation behind us, it got TECHNICAL! We built a 47 degree solar tilt (1kW of solar power!), made custom seat bases & installed our custom seats, we took security to the NEXT level, breaking down our 12 incredible layers of security, wired everything our tech-dependent home will need, created the BEST insulation we've ever seen in a campervan (check out our video on campervan insulation & cold camping insulation), installed our own custom security cameras, framed the ceiling, AND created our peak-a-boo curtains. 🐾 Who are we?
We’re Ladi (from Czechia) & Margaret (from USA) and we love eBikes, campervans, & cats. In 2020 our van life lifestyle flipped upside down, & we needed to stop traveling in our camper to lockdown in eastern Czech Republic due to the pandemic. With no travel plans and some new time on our hands, we decided to sell our old van, start an electric bike business, begin a youtube channel, build our ultimate dream campervan, renovate a junkyard into a tiny house homestead, plan a container & upper workshop space… well, some other smaller projects in-between 😅.
What we thought would only be 6 months of “stillness” has become 2 years of innovation, progress, and so much fun, and most of that is thanks to YOU. Although we’re excited to be back on the road and traveling the world again soon, we’re so thankful to lay a foundation here in Central Europe & bring you with us on this crazy journey. Outstanding, although you might want to increase the size of your dip holes in the bins as surface tension may mean they don't drip with such a small hole.
You hit another one out of the park. Awesome how lightweight it is. Good choice on removing the gray screws. The only thing I would do differently is make the green handle black and make the color of the panel gray to match the gray on the back door. Just personal preference. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thick curved wooden things are made in Japan over a mold like that, but I think they are steamed as well. I’m more sure. So cool! Nice job!

Love the attention to detail, new fav van builds to watch! The condensation collector they have them on narrow boats, heads up they need cleaning regularly with like an old toothbrush and flush the pipe.

I came into your van build late, but I am disabled and spend a lot of time bed ridden, but I managed to catch up pretty quickly. I think what you are doing is fabulous and then I see you have a dog but won’t take him with you, he looks happy with where he is and he looks old, so why not let the family keep him and when you come back you have a friend to greet you, and you will be back as you want to build vans and your tiny home on site so have a heart for the small guy.

Idea from seeing the closing drone shot of your area: there's a lot of gravel and concrete right now, and some of that seems unused space. So, why not add a small but dense food forest to the back area of your land! Look into permaculture for how to design one that can maintain itself (mostly) and feed you year-round. The big advantage of a food forest over a veggie garden is how suitable it is for part-time nomads like you: when you're there, it feeds you and you can do some maintenance like pruning; when you're not there, it can cope on its own.
yes, we have LOADS of food & garden plans, but right now the area/land has a lot of renovation that needs to happen, and any attempt at a garden likely be damaged as we continue with construction. Hopefully next season we can put some trees in, but this season we'll likely only plant blueberries & tomatoes.
@@ladiandmargaret That makes sense, first the trees need a safe place :) Until that time, you can grow them in pots and other containers. Allows you to start from seeds or cuttings, saving a lot of money compared to buying from a nursery. Just for inspiration, I don't expect you to have time for that on top of everything.

Marvelous - I'm a furniture designer/maker and dialing in my own 4x4 Astro van - Time is a thing though so I'm not able to put THAT much time into all the finite details put into just this one door panel. The 3D printing and the fabulous shop space (I mean, COME ON! that bandsaw along is friggin' incredible) is pretty mind blowing - In the end when you factor all the time into it that door panel is several thousand dollars worth of time and material....
You never ever fail to amaze me! Honestly, van build gods! Do you think you would ever consider creating a 3D model library of parts you print, so those with the same vehicle model could use your models (either with a voluntary donation or at cost to have access to your genius!)
I have a few ‘let you imagine run wild’ ideas that were too hard for me to execute but I think you guys would be able to do it. 1. Incorporate the Closet Boom wardrobe hangers (only 8cm deep built to fit behind a door, plus once you have clearer the hanger (of course choose space conscious extra high hangers) your closes take up less than 8cm in depth) somewhere in the van, maybe in the partition, or maybe on the sliding door (might not be enough space). 2. Open concept shower. Use cabinets toekick, shower drain channels, all on a tiled kitchen floor. Instead of shower walls you have quick dry shower curtains.

Holy smokes! It truly is Art to convert the door the way you did! Ever since I was a little kid and we got our first van conversion the bare metal on the back doors and the naked side doors whether they’re hinged or slide, have never made sense to me at all I am so glad you are able to cover them, give them good insulation, and actually provide a repeatable way other people can do the same! Thank you so much for your imagination and follow through and craftsmanship!
Margaret, I hope you had a wonderful time visiting your father. That was really good airfare, for sure. Ladi...where to start...you have such a creative brain. There are so many things you have taken to solving that most people just say, "Oh well!", and deal with them. Also, both of you have such an eye for fit and finish...like with the grey screws in this video, changing them to black. I absolutely loved your solution for capturing the condensation at the bottom of the window...GENIOUS! Last but not least, Ladi's sense of humour was adorable in this one. I love to see him so excited over his (and your) ideas coming to fruition.

I'm planning my own build and watching every video under the sun to know all my options. It often seems like people don't take things as far as they could because they're desperate to get on the road and then simple things like hanging a door end up on complaints lists.
This was so satisfying to watch. Taking the time to really think of everything from function to aesthetic is what I want to see.

Your excitement on making a van just makes me want to make my own. Have you ever thought of using chalkboard paint in a van?
For the condensation project, there is one thing to look out for. My husband and I live in Arizona and 'swamp coolers' are common here. We had an issue with ours a few years ago where suddenly the water would stop flowing. The water supply line was very small and did the job well enough, but it had a tendency to collect mold. As the mold built up, it would block the tiny line. We replaced the line several times and got it working again and my husband did try to clear the line (failure - it was 25 feet long), but never found a permanent solution. (The idea of mold spores blowing through my vents haunted me until we moved.)
I'm just saying that it's a good idea to keep an eye on it. If it clogs, you'll know what the issue is. For that small line, it should be easy to run a wire through to clear it, then inject bleach directly into the line to kill the mold. If the problem does happen, a bleach injection once a month as part of your normal maintenance should keep the issue under control without too much fuss.

Wonderful craftsmanship and use of space. I see all those metal voids in van walls as potential and love to see someone who has the skills to build storage rather than skin over the whole lot.

Love the curved corners made by laminating veneers. we have experimented with curved corners using kerf bends. May now have to try through laminated route.
Ahh now I get Ladi's expertise. He was a cabinet maker! I can't stop thinking about what could have happened to Millie and I had a thought. Could there have been a delivery van nearby the day she went missing and she jumped in it? Could you call around to delivery companies, see if they made deliveries nearby, and then ask where their next stop was? She may have hitched a ride to somewhere you haven't looked. I have had cats most of my life and I'm pretty good at thinking like a cat. I once adopted a cat who was hanging around the library near me for five days. He would follow each person from their car to the front door and then back again. I thought he must have jumped under the car at his house and then came out at the library. It's worth a try!

not really a top-of-mind issue for the condensation, but will make a big difference for us winter camping!
You'll have condensation on the windows because you went for glass windows. Most campers use Dometic or Polyplastic acrylic double glazed windows. So no condensation. Anyway that's a neat solution. I hope it works. I've built motorhomes and I'm now building expedition vehicles. I've been enjoying your build. Best of luck.
