What an amazing story, Leo, Mr. Waller life, I couldn't imagine his and his families hardship being born into salvey. Once freed, these wonderful people didn't stand around, saying poor me, they built themselves a business, educated themselves, they are true American heroes a true rags to riches story, thanks Leo.

One of your best videos to date, and not because I suggested it. You did a great job telling the story.

Awesome story! The Wallers were an example of what a little hard work and initiative can do for you.
I am curious as to what happened to the older daughter. May they all rest in peace. Thank you very much Leo and Heather, for telling this story. Have a great day. 😊

Leo my Grandmother, Grandfather and my Mother as well as the rest of my mother said were from the North Carolina mountains and were Cherokee at less half. I'm very proud to be called a Hillbilly. And I lived in Las Vegas Nevada for over 31years and I tell people with my Southern drawl that I'm a hillbilly. I love your channel.🇺🇸☮️😇🦋🐝

Another great video! I've said it before, but I'm so glad you all are documenting so many historical figures of the area before their stories are lost to time. There are a lot of unsung heroes lying in those hills.
Sorry to hear about Heather's incident with the wasps. Reminds me of the multiple yellow jacket stings I would always get around the Chattaroy School as a kid. I guess the mascot of the school was appropriate.

What a wonderful and beautiful story Leo! It so awesome that Mr. Waller became such a successful member of the community. Leo, this is a wonderful piece of Kentucky history. There is another story of a successful slave, John Parker, whose father was white, was brought to Kentucky. I have written a chapter book about this man, but not published as of yet. His story is very interesting. Thank you so very much Leo. This was just an awesome story. Sorry to hear that Heather was stung by a wasp. I have been in those shoes.

I know about getting stung by hornets! Never had an allergic reaction until about 10 years ago, and got stung about 10 times of my arms which sent me into anaphylactic shock and to the hospital. I was one sick pup, the Dr said I could have easily died. Not fun! Just glad you are feeling better now Leo!

My mother was a justice from pikeville, always told she was cherokee she looked it but we found out she has sub saharan african dna, Her last name was Justice. (also a McCoy) But I just know my heritage is in this specific cemetery! My guess is her justices were actually descendents of the slaves of the Justice family. I hope one day to figure it out, Id be so grateful if you would do some investigating on these families Leo! love your channel.

    Very nice story, Leo, Heather.
It was very nice how this family not only moved on after slavery but excelled at life.
These children were obviously motivated by their parents.
Great story for anyone, regardless of race or position in life. If you want something out of life, apply yourself, learn, work hard, and don't wait for handouts.
This man, by account of this story, would be a nice man and good friend.
Thank y'all very much for this story.
These are the types of people that black history month should highlight.
God bless y'all and stay safe out there on your travels.

I’m from Harlan County Kentucky but live in Columbus Indiana since 94 as I’m watching this video the song You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive comes on my daddy’s side during the 1800’s was a family feud between the HOWARDS & TURNERS how it all got started was someone thought the other family member was cheating at a poker game and as a joke caught the other persons hair on fire
