That is so very sad and at that time she has no medical help and couldn't turn for help. She talked to a friend but she either could help. Let's hope this is a eye opener for others. Still a lot of people don't know about this. Thank you Leo and Heather
May they all rest in peace😢 She was in so much pain especially with all those children so close together in age...I have suffered through postpartum depression myself and if you haven't been through it you can't understand. She honestly saw no way that things could get better and had no help back then, plus the fact nobody knows how she may have been treated by her husband behind closed doors.
We are lucky today, because medicine has grown in leaps and bounds. I remember my grandma speaking of women who were put in mental hospitals for life after childbirth, or were found in the barn hanging after childbirth, with their children unharmed. Mental illness is treatable now, thank goodness!!
Yes, Leo so many people and their unique stories are long forgotten which is very sad. What a sad tragic story about the Sartin family! Didn't they know anything about birth control in those days? If Mr. Sartin wanted to be child free, why didn't he use some kind of protection. Thank you Leo for sharing this story.
Having gone through postpartum depression myself 4 different times I so relate to what this whole woman experienced and I completely understand on some level!!
Kenis and Vicy are my great-grandparents. Harold was my grandma's brother. My dad has shared a lot about that day, as he was with his mom when the family was found. It happened before I was born but you've told the story so heartbreakingly well.
What a tragic story, truly sad. That was on my 17th birthday, makes me feel bad that something so bad happened while I was celebrating . Thanks Leo, see you down the road. Besafe out there.
I have 3 daughters exactly 2 years apart. I had postpartum depression a few years after that. The girls are adults now with children of their own. It’s the being at home most of the time with the children when they are crying all at once. That was why I had it. I did get on medication for a few years and enjoying my grandchildren. My husband and I have been married for 43 years and ride our motorcycle and go place and enjoy life.
I had an aunt with postpartum psychosis. She completely forgot she had a newborn and forgot to take care of it. She spent over a year in a psych unit. Relatives took care of her young'uns while she was hospitalized.
My mom's family is from Sydney Kentucky thanks for doing an episode from there. Very sad but as you said it's just a chemical imbalance if they've known back in the day she'd been fine and they would still have been live if they caught it but to a certain extent it was his fault too
Hate to differ Leo but if Harold qas doing the things alleged he added to Mary's post pardon 10 fold so she probably figured she was doing Harold a favor being he didn't want the kids or her ! Maybe it wasn't the post pardon thing maybe she was beat down by Harolds abuse ? Guess we'll never know for sure !! Happy mothers day to Heather!!
I live in sidney. My parents and uncles are buried on the other side of where you began this video. I bet my dad knew them as he was born and raised here. Its so sad. Id love to know more about this area.
This is another story I had heard about growing up. That woman was clearly unwell for a long time before the tragedy unfolded, but either no one knew how to recognize the warning signs or they were ignored because there was a huge taboo surrounding mental problems at the time. Maybe a little of both. I even wonder if the husband was really planning on leaving, or if it was something she had concocted in her mind. I've read that some women who have that many kids really close together like that go through a state of mind that is similar to combat fatigue or PTSD. For a few it sadly becomes too much. Thanks again for another interesting video. And you're right - in another generation, a lot of these stories will be lost to time.
It’s worse when the person doesn’t say anything to someone about their inside feelings. The media has me thinking right off that deaths like this was a quick premeditated action when the person was actually acting off depression and mood swings. I hope we have grown and people getting the care they need.
What a shame, all those children never had a chance to grow up and have families of their own. What demons that poor woman had to have to kill all her children like that. I suppose that mental illness of one sort or another has been around as long as people have been here. Thank y'all for all the stories that y'all bring us. God bless y'all and stay safe on your travels.
Since none of us were there and only 1 side of the story is heard, which was told by Mary to her close friend. From the story of Mary's early life growing up there is a very good chance that a lot of her problems might have been a result of her upbringing. I'm not saying her husband was faultless but without more info I won't pass judgement on him. Like my mother always said, "It takes two to Tango." Now the daggers can come out.
So so sad. This happened here in Texas in 2001. A woman in Houston named Andrea Yates drowned her 5 children in the bathtub. Oldest was 6 and the youngest was less than 2 months. With each child, her psychosis got worse. Dr even told her husband to stop having children. Hubby was a piece of work that didn’t take it seriously. Being in Texas, she received the death penalty. That trial and sentence was thrown out. A retrial found her not guilty by reason of insanity. She’s been in a facility ever since. She’s stayed in a facility by choice.
Thank you Leo for this sad story, I have a chemical imbalance but thank goodness I talked to my doctor about it right away and got on medication. Sending love to you and Heather.
I wonder what kind of mental illness Anse Hatfield had to make him act out in the various ways he did to the point of murder? No excuse at all for his negative behaviors that so many seem to think made him some sort of a hero. This lady absolutely had a mental illness as we all know (if we're educated enough) and she had to have been in a horrible amount of anguish not only dealing with the post partum nightmare - but also an abusive and uncaring husband. She absolutely doesn't deserve to be demonized.
Very possible that she had the postpartum depression but also that's completely negating the fact that he was threatening to leave her with 5 kids to take care of by herself and being only 26 I'm sure that weighed heavily on her mind as well.
My ex dau in law killed 3 of my grandchildren Laci age 7 P.J. age 5 and Christopher age 5 months. She knew what she was doing but why only God knows . Shes in solitary in prison for life. A fitting end for her.
If you want a child free life, then stay single! And FYI, the happiest people are #1. Married men , #2. SINGLE WOMEN! That totally does not suprise me! 🤔🤔🤔🤔
I'm actually related to a branch of the Sartain family Not sure if it connects to this batch but it may. Sartain is the last name of my daughter's biological father. Not exactly nice person. Well and to be fair, well she had the postpartum issue The whole thing of him going to leave her to be with another woman could have also added to the situation. She could have had just general depression too. I mean usually women that have postpartum eventually have depression later in life. I hope they rest in peace and it is a sad story especially if there's a possibility that I may be related to them through my daughter's father.
My 1st husband went to school with a little boy whose mother killed him and his 2 brothers because their dad told her he was going to divorce her and take the children. He said last time he saw him he was so sad everyone could tell something was wrong. But of course they didn't ask. So sad.
She probably was hopeless with her husband leaving, how could she support the kids? Of course she shouldn't have done the extreme, but that husband bears some fault too. Very sad
My Mom had post partum depression in 1963 and 1965. It was not a good thing. She didnt kill us but it wasnt good. I was born 1963 and I was colicky. Then my brother was born in 1965. Paregoric heped my colic
The lady across the street from where my Mom lived as a kid. She tossed her new born into the well, and called her older son to help, and then pushed him in. Then drop the other three on him, and jumped in herself and the all died. My Mom has a picture of the family, and she will not toss it out. I had an Aunt suffer from it, and a friend that wanted to kill her baby. Thank goodness now you can say something, and they know how to help you.
Sad, sad story. Thank you for remembering them.
That is so very sad and at that time she has no medical help and couldn't turn for help. She talked to a friend but she either could help. Let's hope this is a eye opener for others. Still a lot of people don't know about this. Thank you Leo and Heather

May the Lord have mercy on them all.
Such a tragic and sad story. Thank you and Heather both for sharing. 😞
Sad such loss. God bless you all and your family. Ty for story. R.I.P. little ones in Jesus arms.
We are lucky today, because medicine has grown in leaps and bounds. I remember my grandma speaking of women who were put in mental hospitals for life after childbirth, or were found in the barn hanging after childbirth, with their children unharmed. Mental illness is treatable now, thank goodness!!
So very sad thank you for remembering this family and bringing this to the everyone

I remember your sweet Mom. She was one of my favorites. Thank you Leo for sharing this story. I really enjoy your channel
Thanks so much
Bless you and Heather. Thanks for the video.

This is God awful! Thank you for sharing it, it needed to be told!
This happened when I was 4 months old. Hard to believe its been almost 59 years. You are right things were very different back then.
the mother was mentally sick. why should she be deprived of not lying with her family? you’re punishing a mentally ill woman.
Mental illness does not automatically exempt one from accountability for their actions.
I agree that she was sick especially since she had the kids so close together

I have to check all the time to make sure that I’m still subscribed. On with the video.
I was born and raised in Sandusky,Ohio and my husband was from Manchester Ky. We retired to London Ky.14 years ago
This is the saddest story ever, Leo. God rest all their precious souls. I’m crying.
Happy Mother’s Day, Heather ❤

And if she heard correctly and he was planning on leaving her and the children, my goodness, would she have had help?

It is a real diagnosis..it’s devastating

Just heartbreaking 💔😢
Very sad story, may they all rest in peace 🙏 Thank you very much Leo and Heather, for telling their story.

Absolutely correct.

That cemetery reminds me of the cemetery where a lot of my Family members are buried. Lucy Hall Cemetery, Mc Dowell KY

Definitely
MTG appears to be on STEROIDS, too! Former US Navy Nurse Coros Scholarship student in the 1970's! And yes, STEROIDS can have those side effects!
Such a sad tragedy.
Sad story, the poor woman 26 with five children she was so lost and husband leaving with another woman. Her mind fail to realize.
Thanks again Leo!
Even when I get sick and they give me prednisone, it makes me mean. I hate em!
My ex dau in law killed 3 of my grandchildren Laci age 7 P.J. age 5 and Christopher age 5 months. She knew what she was doing but why only God knows . Shes in solitary in prison for life. A fitting end for her.
Tears running down my cheeks like the falling rain
She couldn't help her mental status. There was no help in those days
RIP kids, post Partum depression is a real illness like depression bi polar etc, you're right leo,it wasn't heard of back in the 60s
If you want a child free life, then stay single! And FYI, the happiest people are #1. Married men , #2. SINGLE WOMEN! That totally does not suprise me! 🤔🤔🤔🤔
I wonder what YOUR family reunion would be like!!!
Probably pretty wild. lol

Very sad; tragic that there was no help for her and she felt this was her only option 😞
Hello Leo and Heather
Postpartum depression
Im going to blame the husband, some men can drive you insane.
So sad prayers going up
Just makes me wonder whatever happened to the wrestler hillbilly Jim.
Sad story Leo!! I thought I heard a weed whacker going !!😎💪🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My mother had 8 kids by the time she was 26
😮
WELL....
That's so very very sad
The lady across the street from where my Mom lived as a kid. She tossed her new born into the well, and called her older son to help, and then pushed him in. Maybe post partum or other psychological problem or maybe just hatred of her lifes situation.
"...we know murderers do not have eternal life". 1 John 3:15. Sadly, this woman chose to be lost for all eternity.
You are probably correct😢
