@apexi957 Our test car averaged 24.5 mpg over a week of mixed driving (not including the 10 or so top speed runs we did). If you combine the fuel savings with the great torque band, I'd prefer the diesel version of any of the German SUV's over their gas counterparts.
We have a 2004 and 2008 V10 TDI. 90k and 145k miles, and have been reliable. Great experience. 2004 with rated road tires has been at 165mph, 2008 with all season 145mph. I love these cars.
@infinitimike we're not going to use both at the same time. We were testing one vs. the other to see if they were identical in sensitivity, which they are. We plan on having a backup in case ours gets confiscated.
@rondar2 This is a brand new press car, and we filmed this video last week. It's being replaced in a few months, but it's definitely still in production. The V10 TDI hasn't been sold in the US since 2008.
@Cbagpipes probably not until after Bullrun. We're extremely busy until the third week in July, but the good news is the car isn't going anywhere, so we'll have plenty of time to go play in the dirt when we get back from the Rally.
Birmingham racing i only by a diesel bekose of powa if it is Eco thats a plus i have a audi q7 v12 and the powa is real i love diesels sory for my English
@tinleo333 yes, but you can't turn off the front and rear parktronic independently of each other. I'd want to have the rears on, but the front off, and that's not possible. it's just all or nothing.
@mcglo they had that engine for a couple years, but it wasn't 50-state legal and they discontinued it. my friend has one back in NY, with only aftermarket software it makes 800 lb/ft of torque.
@warrockplayer12 Ranger Rovers and X3's aren't available with Diesel engines in the US. Only the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes ML/GL and the Touareg are available in the US in diesel.
@gearheadd318 we just wanted to test our old one against our new one to see if they are the same, which they are. We also got it so that if ours happens to get confiscated, we get another.
@HiJackZX1 in the touareg, the button turns off all the parktronic, not just the fronts. the rear parktronic is fine, but if you can't see out your windshield and know where the front of your car is, you shouldn't have a drivers license.
TheSmokingTire: i rented a shitty Seat minivan in Ireland last week. I’m over six feet tall and had the drivers seat set well forward to allow leg room for the guy behind me. Still couldn’t see the front end past the bottom of the windshield. Lousy design.
@WillTam08 It's actually more like a Porsche Cayenne than anything else. The Audi is built on the same architecture, but has different dimensions. The Cayenne's dimensions are nearly identical to the Touareg's.
@MrJonnyJones for our purposes, the quality is exactly the same. it gets super compressed for internet anyway. And when you're running 6 of them at once, it's so much easier and slicker to use the contour than fiddle with the Go Pro's tiny buttons.
Whoa throwback! Just saw this and been watching Matt for the last few years. Didn't know The Smoking Tire has been on for 10+. Whata trip. PS LOVE the Touareg TDI RIP miss you.
@Filipinoborn you can't do donuts on the lake bed because it will destroy the surface of the lake, where they race at very high speeds. it's a safety issue. There are plenty of places outside the main lake area where you can do donuts without hurting anything.
@rondar2 The Diesel V10 is no longer in production, so there's no point to driving it. And I have seen the refrigerated glovebox before, and I wasn't "amazed" by it, it's just a nice feature worth mentioning.
@EatmyDust1311 The problem with having a camera car is, if you don't have a third person to drive it on the day you need to shoot, it's damn useless. We remedied that situation for next week's episode.
@EatmyDust1311 we just got back from a very rough few shooting days in the desert (see teaser intro) and we were just too tired to get it done on tuesday. better late than never.
My wife and I both have V10. We are in love with them. Open roads in Nevada, 130 mph is typical, and the faster you go the higher the mpg, right? 28 mpg on the road.
@maniacoffroader It is a major fail that this car doesn't have a full size spare, especially if you don't learn that until you're 10 miles away from a paved road when you get a flat tire.
I say import the drivetrain from the Audi R10, and stuff it into a RS4. Matt, with your connections you can make this happen!!! Old skool follower from the "RPM Radio" days on Sirius. Glad to see you finally getting recognition!!
+nando carpi The V10 eats the v6 in every way. If you have ever had the chance to drive them side by side than you would agree. My father has the V10 and Auntie has the V6 Touareg's. My whole family loves cars. The V6 has its place in the VW jetta as its a very light car.
+Nick Brown The V10 is a double 2.5TDI R5 which are known to be the worst diesel engines VW came in the last 20 years, its not common rail and has plenty of problems, the w12 is just ridiculous, the best of all is the 3.0TDI V6
@LigerZero1985 the Valentine One is the only radar detector. The rest are garbage. There is no point to having a radar detector at all if you don't know what direction the signal is coming from, and the V1 is the only one that has directional arrows to tell you where the signal comes from.
great show guys. i like how the camera that failed was focused on the tire that failed. and matt, youre already going grey-beard? jesus how old are you, like 60?
@jujitsu62 Probably because they know that no one here will buy them. The germans already design the diesels for their domestic markets, and shipping a few over here with Urea Injection systems isn't all that hard. Americans would have to design a diesel engine from scratch, and it wouldn't be worth it because they won't sell.
@scorpio3949 we've already done 3 different reviews of the SVT Raptor. Mine is exactly the same thing, but faster and with better transmission programming.
el mirage! its el mirage! thats weird watching that place on tst. bet you had fun there in that new camera car!!! scta time trials would make a great show. you have to see them run at least once, its unbeleivable. how did the raptor handle in the silt beds?
@TheSmokingTire and that touareg is not in production either. while that touareg in the video was being produced 5.0 V10 was still an option. so there...
@CorvetteCrazy1000 I may be the only person on earth who has experience with both these vehicles in the same week. The Raptor is certianly more unique, and cooler, but if you're not going to be doing real off-roading, the Touareg is a much better way to spend your money. On pavement, the Touareg is much more civil than the Raptor, it's smaller, so easier to park, and it gets WAY better gas mileage, like 15 mpg better. For my purposes, Raptor all day. For the average person, Touareg.
How effective is the air conditioning in the Mojave heat? And yes, the kind of people that buy big expensive SUV's usually CAN'T just look out the window!
Petrol turbos will always be quicker than diesels. I own a 1.9 tdi Ibiza 2003 with only a remap and filter but that made 174bhp and 319ft lbs of torque
Where was the damage? On facebook you said the car was damaged. Did you mean the tire? I thought i was going to see matt smash the vw into something hard.
@TheSmokingTire Yeah, they told us we have to drive off lake bed where the surface is kinda rough to drift our cars, cause they need the smooth surface for planes to land or something. We still had a lot of fun, though. Cleaning after is the only hard part, lol. I love my evo, and anyithing that have AWD.
Great review! Is there any chance of you reviewing a Range Rover? I know you're more into reviewing sports cars, coupés etc. than into SUV's but I think it would be interesting.
Wow, Matt, I'm really looking forward to next week's episode. It looks like you drove more than a few fantastic, heavily breathed on cars. That is a massive turbo on that Carrera. I'd bet on A LOT of power...in bunches! Definitely a sufficient teaser :)
good review... ive always liked the touareg except for its massive weight and unncessary offroad abilities (in my case). at times i couldnt hear the commentary because the music was a bit loud
Another car that has adjustable suspension and other neat features that would be a cool comparison to this vehicle is the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, it even has Hill ascend, upgraded interior over the cheap previous Cherokee. keep me posted i just got a 2004 v10 90000, im excited for the vehicle
how do you like it and how is it holding up i want one
@@charliewood7820 well, after 20 years we still own 2. There is nothing like the V10
@jesustorres85 The Q7 TDI we tested last year was almost exactly the same price. We like the styling both inside and out better in the VW though.
@c208captain the 60 mph winds out there on the lake bed flung one of the doors open and bent the doorframe. it wouldn't close properly after that.
@Mastamarek not unless we go to europe to test it, they aren't available in the US.
Wow! This was great to go down Smoking Tire "memory lane"
And the background music!
This was awesome yall!
@infinitimike we're not going to use both at the same time. We were testing one vs. the other to see if they were identical in sensitivity, which they are. We plan on having a backup in case ours gets confiscated.

@Josephalosaurus we will be posting the videos on Black Magic Shine as well as all the normal TST distribution points.
This is where the V10 wins. The V6 might be as quick around town, but the V10's extra HP means at any speed you mash the pedal and there's power.
but you lose alot of economy so no point of the dieseyy
+Birmingham racing The carbon build up is real.
Birmingham racing i only by a diesel bekose of powa if it is Eco thats a plus i have a audi q7 v12 and the powa is real i love diesels sory for my English
You can chip the 3.0 TDI Touareg and easily get amazing numbers. In fact my VW dealer offers it.
Too bad the first gen cars are junk.
@bulegold56 most come from press fleets, all of which have michigan plates.
@tinleo333 yes, but you can't turn off the front and rear parktronic independently of each other. I'd want to have the rears on, but the front off, and that's not possible. it's just all or nothing.
@velvetymouse we alternate between our Panasonic HVX200 and the smaller Canon HFS11
Only the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes ML/GL and the Touareg are available in the US in diesel.

first time to your site. Graet presentation, video , sound. I was already a huge Touareg fan; now Smoking Tire as well...
@ohgottweristdas it will be a 2011 model here, and it will be out in a few months.
@minibus1351 the 2011 is new, coming out in a few months.
@HiJackZX1 in the touareg, the button turns off all the parktronic, not just the fronts. the rear parktronic is fine, but if you can't see out your windshield and know where the front of your car is, you shouldn't have a drivers license.

@ratmtbola I'd really like to try the new range rover, but haven't given much thought to it before. I'll ask around and see if we can get one.
@davidmac2007 zero. it's an air conditioning vent ducted right into the glovebox, so if you have the A/C on, it's working.
@Filipinoborn you can't do donuts on the lake bed because it will destroy the surface of the lake, where they race at very high speeds. it's a safety issue. There are plenty of places outside the main lake area where you can do donuts without hurting anything.
@mariokart209 Bullrun ends in Las Vegas on July 16th.
@rondar2 The Diesel V10 is no longer in production, so there's no point to driving it. And I have seen the refrigerated glovebox before, and I wasn't "amazed" by it, it's just a nice feature worth mentioning.
@superchargedturbo wow, good call. I was sure it was TT, but you're right. It's a single turbo.
@tomriley123 not available in the US. You'd spend nearly a quarter of a million dollars federalizing something like that.
@EatmyDust1311 The problem with having a camera car is, if you don't have a third person to drive it on the day you need to shoot, it's damn useless. We remedied that situation for next week's episode.
@jaklee86ca 2 people, total. Me, Matt, and Tom. That's it. We shot it in a single day, with 4 small cameras and one large one.
@EatmyDust1311 we just got back from a very rough few shooting days in the desert (see teaser intro) and we were just too tired to get it done on tuesday. better late than never.
I got the V10, it's fantastic
I was going to go for the V10, instead went for a Cayenne 4.5 V8.
Put off by diesels after my Jeep with the 3.0 v6 mercedes engine.
Well done the video for see it
Damn, is it breathing still?
@Hiberada erada damn
My wife and I both have V10. We are in love with them. Open roads in Nevada, 130 mph is typical, and the faster you go the higher the mpg, right? 28 mpg on the road.
@JENSDONT press cars won't be available for a few months.
@Colleptic it's the noise. The average non-car enthusiast hates the sound of American diesel truck engines, at least the people I know do.
@maniacoffroader It is a major fail that this car doesn't have a full size spare, especially if you don't learn that until you're 10 miles away from a paved road when you get a flat tire.
What about the V10 TDI?
I say import the drivetrain from the Audi R10, and stuff it into a RS4. Matt, with your connections you can make this happen!!!
Old skool follower from the "RPM Radio" days on Sirius. Glad to see you finally getting recognition!!
@TheSmokingTire you love it so much you make every day valentine's day!
the v10 and w12 are the only touaregs worth talking about imo
***** 20 MPG mixed on the v10. Not as bad as lots of lesser vehicles out there.
***** no man : the v6 3.0tdi has more or less the same pull of the v10. is also 250 chilos lighter.
of course there is differences : no much dough.
+nando carpi The V10 eats the v6 in every way. If you have ever had the chance to drive them side by side than you would agree. My father has the V10 and Auntie has the V6 Touareg's. My whole family loves cars. The V6 has its place in the VW jetta as its a very light car.

Keep up the good work guys! i love the included suction cup fail! haha.
@LigerZero1985 the Valentine One is the only radar detector. The rest are garbage. There is no point to having a radar detector at all if you don't know what direction the signal is coming from, and the V1 is the only one that has directional arrows to tell you where the signal comes from.
@bottomlayer The A/C works good.
thats where i learned how to ride a bike without training wheels. ya i was very dirty when that day was over. fun though good memories w dad.
We an debate all day about the merits of owning the V6 vs V10 diesels, but for video content like this, there is no contest: V10 all the way!
great show guys.
i like how the camera that failed was focused on the tire that failed.
and matt, youre already going grey-beard? jesus how old are you, like 60?
Holy shit. I cannot believe how long I've been watching your Channel. Long enough for you to look much different. Lol.
@steelerfreek007 If they offered this drivetrain in the CC, it would be the fucking bomb.
@ViperVenomACR indeed sir....
You should've tested the twin turbo diesel V10 with 310 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. That model gets to 150mph.
maybe you should try this run with the V10 TDI model, over 700lbs of torque ....
Most turbo diesels nowadays are quiet and powerful. I like Audi's V12 turbo diesel. Now, that's power!
in the intro those where the 7 supercharged cars u were taking about on FB right Matt , btw love the BMW :D
@DZoneTV July 9th to 16th
@scorpio3949 we've already done 3 different reviews of the SVT Raptor. Mine is exactly the same thing, but faster and with better transmission programming.
Matt, when we can expect to see a review of your 6.2L Raptor??? I hear good things about the new engine and id love to see a full review of it.
el mirage! its el mirage! thats weird watching that place on tst. bet you had fun there in that new camera car!!! scta time trials would make a great show. you have to see them run at least once, its unbeleivable. how did the raptor handle in the silt beds?
Have you ever driven a Jeep Liberty Diesel? They were made in 2006 and a couple years around that time.
and ya congrats for your new car, love that car too although am not a big fan of trucks that is something different :D
@TheSmokingTire and that touareg is not in production either. while that touareg in the video was being produced 5.0 V10 was still an option. so there...
You get the fully loaded one and dont get a full sized spare?
@CorvetteCrazy1000 I may be the only person on earth who has experience with both these vehicles in the same week. The Raptor is certianly more unique, and cooler, but if you're not going to be doing real off-roading, the Touareg is a much better way to spend your money. For the average person, Touareg.
Is the refrigerated glove box any different than what was in the Dodge Caliber?
How much mpg does the diesel version get? Would you prefer it over the petrol version by the fact that it gets better mpg?
Kind of hard to pay attention to what you're saying about the Touareg when you tease us with the VF Engineering special next week. lol :D
never took a second look at this VW until I saw the movie Repo Men, Now its kinda growing on me. :)
How effective is the air conditioning in the Mojave heat?
And yes, the kind of people that buy big expensive SUV's usually CAN'T just look out the window!
@TheSmokingTire They do offer it in Audi A4 in Europe. Opt for a sport differential from S4 and you end up having quite a handsome car.
i cant wait for the rally , i watched last years and it was awsom
That engine, along with AWD needs to be in a long-nose jetta!! Who agrees? That would warrant a large sticker price! Your thoughts Matt?
what I hate is the computer limited my tdi golf 2.0 engine top speed. my friend chipped it for me and wow, it runs like the gti.
Petrol turbos will always be quicker than diesels. I own a 1.9 tdi Ibiza 2003 with only a remap and filter but that made 174bhp and 319ft lbs of torque
What is the purpose of having TWO of the same Radar deterctors right next to each other?
how much does having a fridge in your car affect fuel econom?, i've always thought it would hurt it badly
I'm curious, all your test cars seem to have Michigan license plates.
Who supplies your test cars?
Where was the damage? On facebook you said the car was damaged. Did you mean the tire? I thought i was going to see matt smash the vw into something hard.
is that a radar detector on your windshield?
can you suggest one for us?
@TheSmokingTire Yeah, they told us we have to drive off lake bed where the surface is kinda rough to drift our cars, cause they need the smooth surface for planes to land or something. We still had a lot of fun, though. Cleaning after is the only hard part, lol. I love my evo, and anyithing that have AWD.
The speedometer says 160. I cant see it going over 140 without steering wobble.
Matt, any chances of testing that V12 BiTurbo Diesel Audi suv thingy!? its just sounds ... so ridiculous, that I want to have one ^^
Great review!
Is there any chance of you reviewing a Range Rover? I know you're more into reviewing sports cars, coupés etc. than into SUV's but I think it would be interesting.
@drewetc yeah man, everyone gotta pay the bills somehow.
Matt, are you going to review the new Grand Cherokee when it comes out?
You should test drive the V10 TDI version with 1200 Nm of torque. They pulled a Boeing 747 with it on a british car show called Fifth gear.
haha Suction Cup Fail, but luckily u had a good camera
great show mate, from Australia
Is this a euro spec Touareg? I'd die to get a v6 TDI with air suspension and that v10 TDI body
OMG that porsche 911 looks so badass with that charger
why didnt you ask for the 2011 touareg v6 or v8 tdi???
Another car that has adjustable suspension and other neat features that would be a cool comparison to this vehicle is the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, it even has Hill ascend, upgraded interior over the cheap previous Cherokee. It supposedly is even better on road, Id like to see a video of that and then you can compare the two.
How many camera crews work in order to shoot this video?
not available in the US. not sure about everywhere else.
What isn't? This Touareg is available, even post scandal used.
that glovebox idea is fking awesome
So how much more reliable is the TDI in comparison to the V6?
love that car, but why not the new one??
am excited for next week
I cant wait to see the Bullrun rally feed!!
