    Another great head-to-head review by Jay. He sets the standard for H/T//H reviews because he lets the bikes speak for themselves, this way he doesn't have to worry about politics or offending anybody, it is what it is, and they feel as they feel. All he does is give you as accurate description in what measure they feel different or similar to each other as possible. This saves us viewers time, because on our own it is exactly what we would have to do when making an expensive purchase, compare. He saves you time and money. I think after all these years other reviewers are starting to catch on and not be afraid to compare, but they don't have the experience that Jay does to make great comparisons. Here is to the original unapologetic H/T/H reviewer, here is to you Jay!

      Really I would love to spend more time on the Shadowcat... that was the bike that helped me realize how little traction I actually had on my Stumpjumper lol. I demo'd it maybe a month after building up the Stumpy and was so high on the stumpy until I rode the Shadowcat and was like, "this bike is insane and glued to the ground even tho it has small tires haha" it was crazy. Have the Pivot Trail 429 Enduro Build for 18 months. Bought it after I watched your original video.The bigger fork Fox 36 Grip 2 and Fox rear Float X just make the bike that much better on long steep technical areas. It's like riding a 160 Enduro bike but climbs so much better. One bike that blurs categories.

    The harshness feeling from Stumpy is due to degressive shock tune and volume reducers in the negative air chamber. I retuned the shock from degressive tune to linear, removed the volume reducers from negative air chamber and the feel is completely different.

But that seems more on the XC side of Downcountry, while the Trail 429 is more on the trail bike side of Downcountry. But in reality, for the majority of us "trail" riders, the Trail 429 might be the best balanced bike in terms of pedal efficiency, agility, and capability. I would definitely take the BC40 over the Ripley since to me the Ripley is too squirly downhill. if I'm going to trade capability for speed, why not get the lighter BC40 XC-ish bike?

    My 2 cents. Short Travel Trail bikes are the ideal bike for my trails in Texas. I am fortunate enough to own multiple bikes, to name a few; Pívot 429 22,Ibis Ripley and Ripmo 22, Specialized Stumpjumper expert w control sl wheels 22, Specialized Epic 2018 and for me, nothing comes close to the Ripley and it’s DW link. I just think the DW link suspension is magical. It translates what you think to the trail almost instantaneously. I honestly do no think Pívot has the same effect. But to each their own, just wanted to share my experience.

      Edwin, thank you for weighing in. I love it!! If you're new to the channel or not familiar with me, let me introduce myself... The Ibis Ripley is my favorite bike ever made and I've ridden one for the past 4 years!! I also spent a lot of time on the Exie last season but I completely agree with you! That said, I can hit the limits of the Ripley more easily than the T429.... I love that about the bike but it also makes the T429 a more well rounded bike in my experience. It's not as lively and fun as the Ripley but I would be able to handle more diverse situations and terrain better on the T429. Higher speeds for example over rougher terrain. The Ripley is incredible and well documented on my channel. Again, thanks for weighing in!!

    I’ve been riding a trail 429 for four years and just picked up a stump jumper Evo. I agree with the comments 100% the 429 is super plush and feels super planted it grips like crazy on turns. The Evo’s strength is descending other than that I like the pivot 429.

      haha yeah, I don't think I could bring myself to do it. lol They're just different. The Ripley is soooo much more playful and lively. They just do things different and I think more people can hit the limits of the Ripley quicker than on the T429... and to be honest, that's what I love about the Ripley!!! I can really wring the life out of that bike and make it feel like I'm taking it for a ride so to speak. Some heavier riders might find it to flimsy or not substantial enough to really hammer on... I could be wrong but I really notice the difference between the Ripley and T429 when I ride them... I also notice the subtle deflections on the trail on the Ripley where the T429 really doesn't get pushed around too much. Who knows, maybe Tyler and I make it happen this season... we'll see haha Thanks!

    I have owned both of these and as a heavier rider the Pivot seamed harsh, like an XC bike with big legs. The stumpy seamed very controlled and calm in the corners and especially jumping. The pivot pedals more efficiently for sure. Maybe my weight allows the flex stays to flex better making it feel more plush. I am a Ripley fanboy...BIG TIME and it is the only short travel 29er worth owning. I sold it for an Evil Offering because I can only own one bike right now and the Ripley can't handle my "Lets go to the Hospital" kind of big days. Great video as usual Jason.

      You are kidding, the Pivot felt less plush then the Stumpy? this caught my eye because I am considering both bikes and was leaning towards the 2019 Stumpy just before they changed away from the horst-link suspension because heard was plusher and smoother than the new one. That is really my #1 concern, plushness and I am a heavier 200 lbs. rider. Did you also own/ride the previous Stumpy?

      haha Nicholas, thanks for weighing in!! I too am an Ibis Ripley fan boi and always end up comparing every new experience on a bike to the thrills of the Ripley!! 31acruz, the previous stumpy is drastically different from the current stumpy. If you're loyal to the Specialized brand and want a plush trail bike, you would be better off going with the current stumpy evo and riding it in the steepest head tub setting at 65 degrees. It's an excellent trail bike but won't climb as well as the Trail 429 or Stumpjumper.

    I think I'm selling the Stumpy :( It just seems a little too demanding sometimes and I want something more forgiving of bad riding, especially when fatigued. I nearly crash on the Stumpy much more often than on my previous bike (RM Instinct prev. gen). I found a listing on PB for a latest Instinct and a 429 Enduro, any thoughts on which might be more forgiving and provide best traction? 429 is a bit more expensive but would love to know thoughts.

      Salt Cycles is offering crazy deals on T429's right now... at least call and see what they can do: 801-943-8502 Instinct is an awesome bike but maybe a bit too much bike for 90% of my rides... Salt has those too... I completely understand where you're coming from tho on a bike asking too much of you too often... gets sort of annoying to have to always be "on" Good luck!!

    @MTB yum yum, what would you like to see Ibis do to the Ripley after the V4s? For that matter, this would apply to the Trail 429 and others also. Personally, I'd like to see the Ripley become slightly more progressive in the rear end and move to 130 while keeping the HTA and STA close to what it is now and spec it with a 140 fork (150 optional). In other words, separate it further from the Exie and then move the Ripmo to a true more modern Enduro bike. I'd allow the Ripley and T429 to take over the spot vacated by the SB130 and possibly Switchblade.
    I rode the SB120 several times and it's impressive. I like that they didn't go too long or low or slack on the geometry, but the frame gained too much weight. I can tolerate the weight on the SB140, but it's too much for a SB120 when there are so many other great options like the Ripley, T429 and StumpJumper. I think Pivot and Ibis could modestly evolve their 120 platforms to own the space between 'Down Country' and trail/enduro 150-160 bikes. Keep the wheelbases for a M no more than 1220 and make them playful and robust. (last sentence should be L at 1220 and Minder 1200) My $0.02!
    Sorry I missed you while you were in CA. I had bikes lined up for you and trails waiting!

    • @mtbyumyum

      Sadly I think you're right about the direction most brands are taking these 120mm bikes, the Ripley included. In a perfect world and if I was in charge over at Ibis I would keep the Ripmo what it is and what it was always meant to be.
      The TRAIL KING!!! Leave it right where it is and take that ridiculous Fox 38 and X2 off and let it be what it is. 150mm Fox 36 and 147mm Float X shock.
      Keep the the Ripley just how it is at 120mm dps and 130mm Fox 34. (optional 140mm) Keep sta where it is and slack the hta out to 65.5 or even 66 like the AF.... Keep the wheelbase under 1200 (1220 on a medium is WAY to much.... massive.... more than the current Ripmo, Stumpy Evo, Switchblade) The Ripley in my option should remain uber playful and lively....
      Introduce a REAL big bike... call it the Mostduro for all I care.... 160mm X2/coil 170/180mm Fox 38 with 64 hta....
      Like I said, sadly I don't see this happening..... my bet is the Ripley gets biggerer like everything else.... and it's so frustrating.. go look at basically any world xc track... theyre really rough these days and the riders are pushing their 100mm bikes to the absolute limits and even still high posting it some of these riders. A 5" bike like the Ripley is already so capable... why does the industry think every bike needs to be slackened out and lengthened out.... this is why I rode the Exie all last season and just built up another one for this season.... it's crazy fast, lively and plenty capable for 90% of the riders I see out on the trail.... sorry for the rant. 1220 wheelbase, no thank you!

    I Purchased my 4 to 9 based off of your recommendation and it has been an absolute game changer for me. I’ve owned the bike for about 16 months now, and still get a smile on my face every time I write it.
    I’m a NICA so most of my riding is XC. I love the fact. I can push hard and keep up with those kids (for the most part) and yet rip Captain, Ahab, Enchilada, Spinal Tap, Telegraph, etc.
    In my opinion, the traction both up and downhill is virtually unmatched.

      Yes!! Todd, you nailed what I love so much about the T429.... it's an excellent nica coach bike. With fast wheels and tires you can hang w the nica kids but it's substantial enough to ride even the most chunky trails in Utah! It's truly the goldilocks of trail bikes. Now for those of us that really what to open things up on the downhill you'll find the limits of the T429 but not most people. Most adults in their 30's, 40's and 50's aren't willing to open things up and hit speeds that require a bigger bike than where the T429s capability is. That said, you're wondering if the Enduro version would be interesting??? I never rode it because I just don't think it what this bike is about. I think the T429 should remain as light weight and nimble as possible. If you feel like you need a piggy back shock and fox 36, get the Switchblade. It's an incredible trail bike that climbs basically better than any trail bike on the market right now! I could see someone making a case for going 140mm fox 36 on a T429 but the rear end of the bike is so money I just wouldn't mess with replacing the DPS out back... its money!! Hope this helps. And yeah, I don't own a Pivot bike right now...

Trail 429 is the best climbing bike I've ridden but then I rode the enduro version and it didn't climb quite as well and was also not as nimble. If they made a Trail 429 that was 140 130 and light and climbs super well I'd buy it.

    Your observations about the Stumpy's traction on the climbs maps with mine. It can slip on steeper climbs with loose chatter on the trail. On my trails there can be a lot of rocks and gravel on the climbs and there is a spot or two where the rear tire will slip just a little but then gain traction. Tires are a part of this. I ride Schwalbe Hans Dampfs, front and rear with really stiff casing. There are a lot of rocks and plenty are largish with sharp edges: these rocks are not your nice egg-like river bed variety. I had a similar experience with the stock Specialized tires so my personal choice for the Hans Dampfs might not make a difference regarding the traction while climbing on these specific trails.
    I had the Ripley in a size large and there were two things that led me to switch. (1) Sizing. I am 6' with a 34" inseam. I kind of fall into a no-mans land between their sizing for Large and X-Large and I was not happy with my experiments with stem length, etc. S4 is spot on. (2) Geometry. 66.5 for a head tube length is perfect for most things, but the front end felt twitchy leaning hard into the corners.
    I think this was a combination of wheelbase and head tube angle. The Stumpy corners like a dream. I am super curious about the Trail 429 given the Size L longer wheel base and bottom bracket height compared to the L Ripley. I am already invested now, so it may be a while.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  Год назад +1

      Yeah, sizing is huge... I wish all brands followed Specialized and did S1-S6. I would also describe the Ripley as being more able to feel nervous or twitchy as a speed where the Stumpy would still feel controlled... T429 even more so. Thanks for weighing in!

      @REB4444 Год назад +3

      I have had this Trail 429 this past year. I am a huge Santa Cruz fan and love the Tallboy and will tell you the differences I have found. The closest thing in a short travel trail bike in downhill capability of the Tallboy is the Trail 429. The Trail 429 suspension is a little stiffer and is more precise when making windy turns because it has a quicker change of direction. It climbs faster than the Tallboy but the Tallboy is very efficient and there's no lost energy. The Tallboy won't get you up as fast as the Trail 429 but you won't be anymore tired because it gets there with no wasted energy and works great in technical climbs. Climbing, Santa Cruzes tend to have you climb seated and comfortable with their neutral positioning, while the Trail 429 encourages you to stand up and pedal hard a little more. The Trail 429 is more maneuverable in quick flowy, windy trails and I call it the Porsche of trail bikes (so is the Ripley). But the Tallboy rails on corners, especially with berms. The Trail 429 also rails on corners better than any short-travel trail bike I've tried besides the Tallboy. The Tallboy downhill is bottomless and plush, the 429 is bottomless but stiffer which helps in agility but also can seem a little harsher but less harsher than a let's say a Yeti in the same category. The Tallboy is the most capable & comfortable short-travel trail bike I've ridden, but the Trail 429 is the better in terms of overall balance uphill, downhill, in flowy windy trails, with a lot of quick punchy up/downs. The Trail 429 is the best definition of a light downcountry, yet very capable, trail bike.

      Yeah, I'd like to! Wheelbase looks long... similar to the Ripmo, SB140, Stumpy evo, Hightower group of bikes. Sort of makes me nervous.... Wheelbase and chainstay lengths play a major role in the bikes willingness to have fun at slower speeds or create more stability at higher speeds... I prefer bikes that are still fun at more moderate speeds. Twitchy and nervous bikes at 25 mph are a lot of fun at 17 mph... hope that makes sense?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  Год назад

      Hey, just seeing this now... Fun at slow speeds goes like this: For decades I've longboarded (long skateboards with wide trucks and you carving down big/steep paved roads) and you have to really be going pretty fast to get the board to carve and turn. under 10 mph isn't fun... they board wont do what it's supposed to do or if the hill isn't steep enough it just not that fun.... a few years ago I was introduced to Surf Skating... a Surf skateboard had a much shorter deck/board and the trucks are wildly different from that of a long board... they pivot... in any case, I can get a similar carving and turning sensation on flat ground under 7 mph that the long board would require a very steep hill and 15+ mph. So, the surf skate if FUN at shower speeds. Safer too!! Hope this helps. The point is some bikes need less speed to "come to life" other bikes like the Ibis Exie for example can feel very lively and energetic at a much slower speed than the Ibis Ripmo for example... and the Ripmo at slower speeds than a Santa Cruz Megatower... hope this all makes sense?

    • @dachuckster2
      @dachuckster2 Год назад

      @@mtbyumyum Interesting..... its all to do with turning arch radius and the forces one experiences due to that arch. A long board will cut a shallower arch and the turning force experienced riding it will be less unless making said turn at speed, and hence you need to/can lean over less = less fun. The surf skate also has the advantage of the funky trucks so creating a really tight arc and so you can really lean it over at slow speed, assuming you have the grip..... Same goes for a bike, shorter wheelbase = tighter arc, = slower speed but experience similar forces, assuming the bike has the grip, and you can get yourself nice and centred to maximise the fun without wiping out.

    I have watched a bunch of your vid's on the SJ and you continue to mention the the bottoming out and the full use of travel. My question is, are you actually feeling any harsh bottom outs are you just basing that off of the visual of the o-ring? I ask because I had the same issue. The way you describe the ride feel would indicate that the shock has too much pressure. I had the same issue with using all the travel and I continued to increase the pressure and I did not like how it was riding. It was feeling harsh as you describe. Once I brought the PSI back down a bit and accepted that this bike uses a lot of the travel a lot of the time, it changed the whole ride feel and I love it now. With the extra volume spacer, I rarely have a harsh bottom out I can feel and if I do it is on a drop where it is warranted. So...question is....do you feel the bottom out or is the o-ring just telling you your using to much of the travel?

    • @csobinmtbm945
      @csobinmtbm945 Год назад

      I typed this while watching the video. The further I watch, the further it would seem your PSI is too high. I know you know your stuff, so you don't need my comments but "almost hardtail, very rigid, slippage on rear tire, lack of traction, stiff, no pedal bob" would all indicate that rear suspension is too firm. Sag and travel usage are important, but if you removed the o-ring and ignored those and dropped your psi to 165-170ish (not sure what you are running it at), I wonder how it would feel. If you say that you are always feeling harsh bottom outs, then nevermind :) I use all my travel but rarely bottom it out.

      Thanks for weighing in everyone!! I have 191 psi in the can. I removed the yellow volume spacer for the second to largest spacer. That helped but still find the bottom on this very mild blue trails. For this bike to have proper sag, I can't go less than the 191 psi. The other thing to not is the bike is very sensitive to rebound input. One click on this dps shock makes a big difference. For me this speaks to the tune Specialized is using with Fox.... If I ad too much compression (say #3 setting) the bike feels like riding a 2x4... zaps the life out of the bike. The reality is this is a single pivot flex stays bike.... it's going to be lively and zippy feeling do to the lack of suspension management/control. The other thing worth mentioning is I had less bottom out or traction problems in the low setting. The bike actually had a fair bit better traction and I rode the bike as low as 180 psi. I prefer the low setting as well but for the object of this video and comparing to the T429 it made more sense to ride in the high setting.

      @csobinmtbm945 Год назад +2
