  • I needed more cores for work! With a small budget, there were only a few options, so I decided to go out on a limb and go for a engineering sample CPU. It paid off in the end, buy required a lot of testing.

    2 years later ... , i bought an 2680v4 =14 Core Xeon , an relativly good MoBo and 128 GB 2133 reg ram ( 4x32GB ) for ~ 270 Dolllar , the MoBo has 3 X 16X slots with16x ,16x , 4x and two 1x PCie slots , it has Quad Channel with 8 Memory slots . Its still on its way and i f everything works as it should its a bargain and i can build a powerfull NAS with it. The best are the 40 CPU PCIE Lanes , thats perfect for my Dualport 40 Gbit Qsfp + NIC = 16 Lanes , the 4x4 NVME card = 16 Lanes and the LSI SAS Controller card = 8 Lanes , provides 8 Sata ports in addition to the MoBo 8 Sata ports

    Suggestion on that motherboard: there are 2 VRM controllers above the vrm heatsink that you may want to add mosfet heatsinks to, I did so with my 2678v3 and it brought down the overall temp of the vrm from 98c to 73c.

      Amazing info thanks, I am thinking of downgrading the cooler since these boards don't have such large TDPs anyway, and than will make more room for VRM heatsinks. Very valuable info.

      can you post a pic url in the comments highlighting these parts? I might be able to design some heat sinks for them. I don't have a flir cam to test live temps.

      Yea I wonder how an X99 TF (arguably the highest quality chinese x99 board) would handle this CPU. I'm sure the VRMs would greatly appreciate an undervolt. I also wonder about any instability issues considering most chinese x99 boards do not have capacitors behind the socket.

  • @brianschumes4249
    @brianschumes4249 2 года назад +3

    I hope to let you know that processer is an engineering sample for a reason, and that reason is why you got it so cheap, that is not a full retail ready 2699 v4, a full retail chip runs at 2.2ghz base and 3.6ghz turbo, and yours is lucky to even be able to hit turbo speeds, and well actually it doesn't, I saw the listing of your engineering sample and the seller in the photos put like screenshots of it like performing and has cpu-z showing what it is etc, well cpu-z is showing only a turbo of 2.6, so def way off of the 3.6 retail chips will do, there is a reason that it is an engineering sample, also the date of the chip is the 3rd and fourth and fifth digit in the long alpha-numeric strand at the bottom of the CPU heat spreader, and it is "513" meaning the 13th week of 2015, and if you look at Intel's ark website, this cpu didn't even become retail untill q1 of 2016, so you got a chip that was still a year out of releasing and a year in of development still, that's why the "stepping" and the ghz and boost clocks don't come close to what they should, because they were still working out the bugs, that's why it was so cheap, there are loads of cpu's like this on eBay, you have to be careful when buying an "Intel confidential" CPU and sometimes marked "ES"(engineering samples) well meaning they're that, because they could be marked "QS" which I'll explain in a minute, and well it's not always but sometimes it's marked "ES" which can be ok if can see if it has correct retail ghz listed on the CPU heat spreader, then you will know it is a "ES" that was somewhat close to primetime, and also like 88% of the time, the chips that are close to prime time are QS (qualifying sample) chips, they are not always marked but sometimes are, so best is to try and find "Intel confidential" with a maybe marked "QS" orrr another way and prolly the best way is to find an engineering sample that has a date that is real close to date of release of the retail chip and has same base clock written on the CPU heat spreader as the retail chip, like again yours is 2.1 when retial is 2.2ghz, so if can try to match the base clocks, and if the dates are close and the base clocks match, then you most likely have a "QS" even if marked or not, also It still is a good cheap high core count CPU, but it's def not doing what you're thinking it is, well better way to say it is it's def not processing at high of a level as the real retail chip does. I'm not writing this as like a keyboard warrior, I'm just letting you know in a pcmr brother type of way, to let you know that you don't have what you think you have and to be careful in the future, so again not to be that guy, or a keyboard warrior, just well wanted to apply and to use what I said as guidance if going to be buying any more engineering samples, just trying to spread the knowledge about these usually decieving and appetizing Intel confidential chips.

The custom bios (i.e. Turbo-unlock w/an under-volt of -50/-50mV) installed via Miyconst's Mi899 software script (free) with FPT 9.1. Along with THROTTELSTOP (v.8.7) I can get 14 of the 18C up to 3.8GHz (38x) on certain workloads (excluding AVX2 implemented workloads) with remaining 4 cores at 12x mult. Absent THROTTLESTOP, the CPU runs comfortably on all core at 3.2~3.5Ghz, depending on workload. TEMPS stay cool (

      It was very stable from initial testing, but was not stable in the high load all core scenario it was built for. I had very unsuccessful attempts to stabilize it it by turning off turbo and undervolting. I was able to actually raise the voltage on the controller on the chip, and that solved all my problems. It ran for five days straight after than with no issues. I may come out with another video detailing the solution for that further.

      @@ThotaNarendraLifeSciences I have never used a PC for games so I don't have an answer for that. If you want built a server it would depend on whether you are going to use Linux, Windows but in general the easiest way is to buy a used HP Z-workstation that supports dual CPUs on eBay for cheap and then just updating the CPUs and ram. The e5-2600v4s that I was mentioning in my initial comment are a formidable choice with up to 44 cores in a machine and these days they are getting very affordable. Good luck!

      Maybe you should have gone for the 4699 4x cpu. I find 150w is already a serious heater. 4x that and you can open a sauna business.
