    I really hope you revisit the solar cooker! You need a black pot for it to work! And it does work easier in summer/closer to the equator. I have a very simple one that's just shiny foil on cardboard which I use to cook all sorts of things during hot weather when I don't want to heat up the kitchen.

    • @mikekuppen6256
      @mikekuppen6256 Год назад +8

      Fair comment but the instructions should mention those things if they want the review to be more positive. I was surprised at them being happy there was no fire/flame: if the pot gets hot enough to cook stuff things get hot enough to be as dangerous as flames.

    • @Wolfsschamane
      @Wolfsschamane Год назад +1

      @@mikekuppen6256 ??? Hot pots are not as hot as fire, it's not even close. Setting yourself on fire with a hot pot is fairly hard, setting yourself on fire wit actual fire requires as little as having hair hanging too close. You seem to forget that the engergy transfer between fire and pot is by far not 100%. Other things to consider: with wood/coal you have to deal with the embers and ash later, with gas you have to run around with a gas container which always has a certain risk involved + the angle they probably wanted to go for: environmental advantages.

    Great video. I'm pretty sure using a pot with a mirror finish that just reflects the sunlight on that solar cooker was a good idea. Those things work way better with black cookware, which are black because they absorb most visible light.

    • @alyssajohn3746
      @alyssajohn3746 Год назад +8

      I think it would work a lot better if the mirrors were rigid so that you could ensure the light was being focused on the pot. If they bend the wrong way they’re going to scatter the light and sort of defeat the purpose. Black cookware would certainly help too, so it’s not reflecting back off the pan.

      This is the comment i came here for! It was never gonna heat up reflecting all the light instead of absorbing the heat as intended. It just became one with the mirrors lol. I saw the folded camp toaster and immediately went back in time. Our cabin when i was a child had no electricity, wood stove for heat and propane tank stove for cooking. The toaster was a staple every weekend. Laid directly over the flame on the propane stove or by opening one of the holes on the wood stove surface (the spot where you’d add a log or two at a time). This gave the best single sided toast if carefully watched as to not burn it because only the side facing in would toast, the other side would still be soft bread, unless you turned it when the first side was ready. i think it’s such a core memory for me because as a child we didn’t have a lot so the camper toaster was also the at home toaster until i was probably 7/8.

    This's just a fabulous episode! Thank you for the fresh angle on cooking gadgets, location, the inclusion of James (hurrah!) and the wonderful, wholesome, zany, aspect altogether. Was feeling a bit mumpty and glum, for various reasons, and this has me cackling happily.
    Simply put: compliments all round, to the professional/ amateur chef(s)/creators involved😂! Loved it🎉

    Beautiful vid. First, lovely to see the French Alps; I'll probably never get there myself, so they were beautiful to see. Second, great to see James. Glad to see he still continues to suffer no fools (2:06). :)
    Will we get to see Barry in his mountaineering kit he wore in the video in which he dehydrated a lot of food? Fingers crossed. :)

    I recently on one of the shorts saw some folks talking about wanting James back for a challenge involving all the Chefs, and I distinctly remember a comment going "he's no longer with them"
    While the comment is technically correct, the fact this video comes out less than a day after seeing that just makes the irony oh so sweet.

    We made solar ovens as a class project in the 4th grade (in the 70’s, because I’m old.) The best ones were insulated, had a clear cover, and only really useful to heat up already cooked foods, like hotdogs. Ben reminded me of my brother with his travel Maldons. I recently found a tiny little travel pepper grinder in my brother’s camping gear.

    Alp kit cooker is identical to a jetboil Seems a little cheaper. Unclear how long from the video but I think the jetboil is quicker! Certainly works well for boil in the bag meals. And heating canned food with lots of stirring. Only edge I'd give the jetboil is the java edition that comes with a cafetierre press that fits into it! Would work well with tea as well!

    It's funny watching the sorted team review these items. The alpkit is really made for boiling water as fast and efficiently as possible while being compact and light enough to take on multi day trips. The third stove is super cool though and might have to pick one up for some car camping adventures. Thanks sorted!

    The brew kit is often used in backpacking, I believe the common name in the US is a JetBoil. I use them all the time for boiling water to use with freeze dried meals or instant noodles or mac and cheese while camping and backpacking. Also amazing for tea or coffee in the morning when out in the woods. The small footprint and controlled flame makes it easy to use and the fact that the flame is so focused on the container means it boils water within a minute or less

    That solar cooker really should work. I made one myself in middle-school and it worked perfectly. But I was frying bacon which takes a whole lot less energy than an entire pot full of stuff.

    • @petertaylor4980
      @petertaylor4980 Год назад +1

      Not putting it directly on snow probably helps. There's no way that pot can get to 50C without melting the snow underneath it, and melting snow takes a lot of energy.

    • @jleighwolfe
      @jleighwolfe Год назад

      @@petertaylor4980 that would not matter because its purpose is to reflect the rays onto a cast-iron or otherwise darker pot which will absorb rather than reflect. Same concept on a sun shield keeping the inside of a car cool by reflecting the sun vs like blacktop pavement which absorbs the heat.
