THE 'UNO' SALVAGE

- Summer 2002, the Coaster UNO, laden with 2,400 tons of scrap, suffered engine failure in Germany's Kiel Canal. Colliding with a push barge and holed badly below the waterline, she capsized almost immediately partly blocking this critical waterway. Recovery team of SVITZER Salvage and Bugsier Hamburg were ordered by local authorities to urgently remove the vessel. The two-phase salvage plan involved cargo removal followed by vessel righting and re-float. Divers assisted in the process of patching the hole and having massive lifting slings inserted under the hull for the cranes. The need for speed was emphasized by the threatened congestion. The first attempt was succesful, the UNO being delivered to authorities for inspection with no unnecessary delay and without hindering canal traffic.
I love ships, trucks, tug boats cranes trains, big equipment and ingenuity of men of men and women. I thoroughly enjoy these videos. People don't realize how much the count on them until the worst happens
Simply fantastic! Very well done. My deep respect to all involved people.
Very Impressive, noticed the little baby's bathtub picture in the cabin. MOST CREWS EAT WELL, plenty of meat and ice cream. Thanks, great respect for miners of oil and minerals, all kinds of cargoes to us all. Log ships, ore, and grain go with fish. No, silly, not usually on the same ship, except in the galley. 💛❤🎶💛❤
These guys are amazing at their jobs! True pros! Nothing like it!
Nothing less than absolutely brilliant.
My condolences and prayers to the family for the lost of their love one and to uno do not feel bad you are a good ship every body love you
Very well work, congrats to all people contributed.
This is simply wonderful work by man!!!
Love these ship salvage videos! Would also like to see what is involved in subsequent evaluation and refit of a refloated vessel!
I hope it is refitted and not just chopped up for scrap, it's such a huge waste when refloated vessels are chopped up for money.
I am always proud of the Dutch work.
You should be!
Excellent reportage 👍🏻
You are great men, I am proud of you. ❤❤❤
It's amazing what can be done with a ship like this that has rolled over or even sunk. I watched another video about navy salvage divers and how they were able to refloat sunken battleships that were sunk at Pearl Harbor. Of course there was some repair work just good enough to get them to dry docks for formal repairs. Only USS Arizona was left. Couldn't raise her. It's amazing.
link please?
When these guys bring in a heavy lift floating crane it is amazing the mechanical energy they possess.I watched the Heavy Lift Hercules lift a TA&O that had sunk after being on dry dock.Hull repair had fractured.
I'm surprised Mammoet didn't get this job.
Thisnis really extraordinary. Greta work-I cnlt imagine how hard salvage must be at times. I saw the efforts on PASHA BULKER at Newcastle some years ago. Best wishes form Australia. :-0
Job well done excellent team work👌😍😍😍🇦🇺
Awesome job.
Great show! but why do your videos jump like that? Camera problem?
loved this such great detail
Unos whatl they will do next.there good at what they do very good.
Thank YOU!!!
I love these salvage videos
Cox bolt gun ? Hmmmm. Might try that on my ex .... O nevermind!
So, was 'UNO' repaired or was she broken up and scrapped?
At a minimum all machinery and electrical systems and electronics would have to be replaced, along with permanent hull repairs and any necessary structural repairs.
Basically, a full re-fit/re-build of the hull, structure, and all systems would be required.
There is always a point where repairs are not a viable option.
It could cost as much or more, to repair and bring up to modern/current standards/codes as needed, than to replace the entire vessel.
Será que esse navio vai ser desmontado, jogado no fundo do mar ou reformado?
Unbelievable very educational 👌😍😍😍🇦🇺❤️❤️❤️
Switzer & Mammoet are great Dutch companies !
Is it the work of hoisting a sunk scrap ship? I'm glad I succeeded safely.
That’s like 524,000 gallons an hour 😯😯
I love the shonky demolition pole on the old liebherr
The Chief Officer had one job, use the manual steering to correct the rudder angle
🍦☺☺☺🥛probably had to dictate part of the report to first mate, or secretary?👍☺
Once a ship is submerged like that - is the ship worth putting back into service?
No
Yes, it can be. The answer isn't always black or white. It was under water for five days. Much is destroyed, but a lot of that ship can be salvaged and repaired. The longer it is sunk, the closer it gets to being salvage only. Engine and checking electronics are probably the expensive parts.
I enjoy these vids very much EXCEPT for the stuttering recording...it makes my eyes hurt and gives me a migraine. The playback speed of my phone is "NORMAL". I would like to know How to smooth it out.
I watched this on a proper pc monitor. The playback is fine.
Stuttery playback on Samsung Galaxy tablet
Great Job!
God bless ❤
Is Svitzer a subsidiary??
Grande SALVAGE ! Especialista no ramo de resgatar navios .
"sheets of special oil absorbent are also spread".
In my garage we call those shop towels.
Kitty litter in my small shop.
Kitty Litter Best oil clean up
My thoughts are with the Family of the engineer that lost his life 😢
I doubt that engineer was asleep as the ship was sinking.
More tribute to the engineer is needed.
Great effort
So why wernt these proffessionals wearing hard hats working under moving machinery and life vests whilst transferring from vessel to vessel
They are Dutch... they slosh around in water all the time. Dutchmen have their own rules! Don't even think about thinking about telling a Dutchman what to do.
The baby in the bath got me ...... Sad does n't even come close if you were friends, or worse, family. Who cares if it's an advert or a documentary? BobUK.
whose fault?
Good work
Really interesting but I wish the commentary didn't sound like a ruddy sales brochure for the companies.
its a competitive market, they need to keep a professional outlook. these businesses can die fast if popularity goes down.
its a company movie made for that "brochure" purpose
Yup. Just how I would have done it, save for all those environmental concerns. I feel sorry for all of those who worked on this project, knowing of a dead body aboard.
did they find the captain, dead or alive?
Dead, in his cabin.
just love how much the narrators keep stating the obvious
please where can i get some info about the tool in 14.29
internet, search for cox gun .
UAU!Perfeito!!
Moito !
Is it me, or is the video really choppy?
Very jerky. Thought it was only me.
She was bulit 1971 1937 tons last report June 2015. So she must of been fixed!
This is some straight up man stuff right here! All we need now is a monster in the background gnawing on a truck.
LOL. Nice
BRAVO ! ! ! !
GOOD JOB .
OH the ship capsized, with the engineer nowhere to be found. Oh well! Bring the salvage crew! No wait, begin the long task of removing the cargo first!
Was there no rescue divers looking for him? It was not mentioned if anyone searched for him, just that he was missing, and authorities wanted to bring those salvagers.
What if he had air for a few hours in there.

Translated relevant section:
Despite intensive search by small boats and divers, outside and inside the ship, the first engineer could not be located.
Good point, maybe they did, but yes, watertight doors do protect below deck.. iguess i don't know how one would approach that problem. Would take much time? YET agreed. thanks.
Definitely sad.thanks
15:15 Guy "demonstrates" the Cox gun without eye or hearing protection? Discovery Channel bullsh**.
Only five days? Wow!
Well done boyes
И чего эта посудина затонула?Нарушение остойчивости?
The ship looks repairable. Sad about the engineer though. Just doing his job...
cooks gun or corks gun.....cant find it online
COX bolt gun invented in UK in 1920
Bring in the Dutch.
Wish all you documentary producers WOULD STOP covering up the narrative with nonsensical music and sound effects!!!!
cox bolt gun....found it
Donald you do realise propaganda is used by a government not a salvage company right? damn what's in peoples pipes these days?
If prone to epileptic seizures, DONT watch this!!
Holy crap you're right. Whoever converted this to digital needs to consider using a better PC.
Very jumpy video
I can’t help think the narrator is not pronouncing the name of the ship correctly
Too blurry
what¨s the cooks submarine gun or similar.....
troll !
Wong sing kun
It’s called a “cox submarine gun” it’s appears to be an oversized “ramset” powder actuated nail gun.
Ho van sy
No life jackets
on most of these films i never saw any. lets just hope no one ever falls over board. and everyone can swim....
the spinning ball is hysteria
Imagine that, all that money being spent but the guy demonstrating the cox gun can't get safety glasses......
What a shame. All that scrap was ruined. :( RIP.
Why does this vid keep stuttering? I cant watch this.
Unecessary Patch
With the hole being well above the water line of the empty ship, wouldn't it have been enough to empty the cargo and put it upright? Warum spend extra time and money on a patch?
They did roll the ship upright but because the hole was beneath the water level with the ship flooded they needed to patch it otherwise they could not have lifted the ship high enough for the water to flow out of the hole.
to jerky.. im gone
Narna harun
Harun
Can do without the music.
?
👍
That's no where close to being a mobile crane!
im late by half a decade
👌👌👌👌👌👌💪💪💪👍👍
Bad job about the engineer, but I would have though the collision would have alerted him to get off or onto the deck of the coaster.
The collision could have incapacitated him or he was checking the damage below & couldn't get clear in time.
I wonder what it is about smokers blue-collar smokers they seem to think as long as They got that cigarette in that left hand, between them fingers that work will get done
It's funny how smokers stand out now, it wasn't a very long time ago when it seemed like everyone smoked, my Mother said one of things she had to learn as a new mother, was not to drop cigarette ashes on us when she was holding us, my Father smoked four packs and my mother smoked two.
Wow, so tired of hearing the Narrator say "Protecting the environment" . I realize there people out there that watch videos like this for the triggering value but the rest of us know that these salvage companies first rule is safety and then containment (if possible) of pollutants .
Maybe so, but for the german authorities environment is top priority .
The term ‘environment’ was literally only used four times here. I’m glad this is clearly stated as one of the company’s main priorities.
Just pick it up and get it out ! what is that guy doing throwing the spill pad all over the river ? Don’t talk bollox that’s doing nothing right ? Rivers polluted and all this is just a show don’t waste people’s time or money 💰 I’m sure you got well paid for this retrieval so don’t make all the shit up about environmental concerns ok 👌

“The “authorities “ are there to ensure that no damage is done to the environment.” Does anyone else realize how absurdly stupid this comment is? They are there to collect a pay check and stand around while real men work. Of course, they might spot some infraction of some obscure ordinance for which they could create a fine.
Why the jerky video? Most annoying.
I love a good propaganda vid in the morning....
w@
With how much the vid plugs the company the company it is more than slightly propaganda.... Still a cool vid tho!
Donald Crosby So advertisements are propaganda? Are you okay?
Im fine thanks for asking :-) When it is being marketed as a Doco (which it kinda is) it shouldnt be this blatant. And advertising is a form of propaganda after all (altho normally used in politics... The original comment was more than a little tongue in cheek)
Propaganda is in the toolkit of every "good" PR person. To say otherwise is just not honest.
