I'm always totally amazed at the technology, equipment, and teamwork involved in these kinds of salvage operations. Incredible work by highly talented teams of people.
This is foremost the most complete and detailed report on the salvage of the Repubblica Di Genova. Our company Everwin Impex was there also from start to finish. In first instance we were bidding for buying the entire vessel but Grimaldi decided later on to split the bidding, because they wanted to reuse the vessel. We were successful on the RORO bidding and Everwin was awarded the RORO contract. We shredded hundreds of containers, trucks, busses and cars. It was a gigantic salvage operation.
Is it too much to assume that ship designers could possibly design container ships that cannot flip over at a moments instability?? I agree , a lot of these ships turn turtle from incorrect loading/ unloading, but pure greed for profit, in the current designs, are making these ships top heavy and of course liable to flip over at the slightest opportunity!
It's proprietary information so we'll never know, but I am very curious about the cost of the job, especially the huge hardware and various pieces of equipment.. The enormous fiber pulling rope must have cost a small fortune.
For a RORO vessel to roll on its side that is always a combination from mechanical failure in its ballast system and mistakes in the cargo loading plan. Yes you can avoid all, in general RORO vessels are safe and can have a list to 45 degree and will come back up again. problem is here if cargo was not yet secured and starts shifting it is a lost game, because more weight ends on the low side. p.s. even after this recovery the vessel sailed for only 3 years with 3 more names this until 2010 with last name "front" this indicate that even after this operation that the vessel was with to many problems and is later sold for scrap metal.
How much did it cost to salvage the ship? What was the total loss of the contents? Who were affected by the loss of the contents? What was the cost to rebuild the vessel?
They never say any videos like this and I'm always disappointed. I think it would be very interesting to know how much something like this costs. $10 million? $25? 50? I have no idea because they never give us any idea.
the cost of the operation was much more then the value of the vessel....what mishap / imbecility did cause the accident in the first place ? Who was kept responsible ?
jan doerlidoe Normaly there is allways an officer on the bridge to control the stability and pump water in and out ballasttanks. He must be. gone fore coffe or so or in bed with a girl.
+Toy Pupanbai -- The ship had been ballasted several hours before the ship capsized. There was some suspicion that the stated weights of the cargo containers were not accurate. Improper distribution of the cargo's weight might have caused the ship to capsize.
@Charlie K -- The ship was loaded on the basis of the stated weights of the containers. If most of the very heavy containers were loaded on one side of the ship (because their weights had been stated falsely), then the ship could capsize.
Wow, congratulations, job well done. I assume a change of spark plugs, engine oil and a good wash & polish and she was on the road ... oops, sorry, water again. ??
So I have a question. Is all the junk you pull up yours or does your employer get ownership of it? I.E. You are contracted to raise and refloat the ship, but the stuff you pulled out of the water, like trucks, scrap, etc, is that considered a ‘bonus’?
Another long advert on youtube! I have to say, these "salvage" jobs, seema lot like grown men playing with "Meccano kits" ! I also wonder just how many honest decent people lost tons of money,, like the vehicle owners , I bet they were never fully compensated!
The Owners are mostly Businesses that Export the Vehicles. Cargo usually is insured but it is difficult getting Insurance when you are shipping with Grimaldi, given their Number of Accidents, especially on that relatively small Fleet.

Awesome work guys! Congratulations on a job well done 👍 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
amazing work by everyone, very interesting
Is it safe to assume that there is a need for competent cargo officers or load masters?

Very interesting. Thanks
Amazing and what losses !!! Was the accident due to improper loading procedures ?
Is this ship still working or is it in pieces now?
Smart people. Smart Company.
IT didn't mention the cause of the capsize. Is that not an important factor in the pa-buckle ?

Was it ever determined what was the cause of the capsizing?
what caused the roll over?cargo shifting?
The ship was rebuild or was demolished?
If the Titanic sunk last week. I think these guys could bring her back up. But these guys and their amazing skills weren't around then. Too bad.
If the company dates from 1833 - they were around when the Titanic went down - the still don't have the equipment to work that deep.

How much did it cost to perform this task ?
totaly awesome
But, how much ?
I fixed helicopters. 16 days coma, I can't read. Awesome.
Nice Job.

Roll over: No ballast?

must have forgot???

+Kevin Byrne very good kevin you are right

I hurts to se those vintage Volvo trucks go to scrap.

So, Captain, when did you discover that your master's license was in jeopardy?
I think suspected cause was actually misstated overweight containers. The load plan would be fantasy if the starting numbers were wrong.
A very crate design.
You ain't got much..
If you ain't got the Dutch..
