I just love watching these salvage videos. This company also takes such care to 'do no harm' to a lovely area. Very appreciated ...very professional. The steps taken to refloat a vessel aground are amazing. Remarkable job, folks!
@Ian Walter The people of Satawal are famed for their brewing so I think they can handle it and, while Marlboro might be slightly crude, tobacco is a traditional maritime commodity.
Thank you for adding the back ground info and the local people and culture. In my youth I was privileged to travel in the South Pacific among the island people. They were so generous and fun loving people. As a boy, what a way to spend a childhood. Screw computer games, let's go swimming and climbing coconut trees. No windows or locks on the thatch hut!
Public relations 101: Bring lots of food, beer, cigarettes, and a mechanic Loved the scene where everyone was dancing and singing next to the tractor and one of the kids had a beer XD
I half expected the company to have a new tractor delivered to the island for the inhabitants. At any rate it was nice of those guys to try and get the old one running. Good video.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satawal "In 1994, the freighter Oceanus ventured out of the main shipping channel when its captain decided to peek at topless Satawalese women. The freighter ran aground on the nearby Wenimong Reef, the primary source of food for the islanders, and 13,000 square meters of the reef were ravaged. The freighter's insurer, the North of England P&I Association, ended up paying US$2 million in compensation to the Satawalese."
Sadly Yes. It's sad to think that a tune like that would be so readily accepted by these islanders. Surely they would be better off with some Rush or Pink Floyd and/or Jimi Hendrix !
You know, I somewhat agree. When I saw the gifts to the islanders included cigs and booze, it didn't sit well with me. But I understand the thinking behind same.
@mach one My Grandfather was up there around that time too - my grandmother told me it was "bad for him", because he drank like a fish up there. Lol, he still made it to almost 80.
Always curious how a modern ship with modern equipment gets it self in this predicament. Usually human error of some kind. I suppose the sponsor doesn't want to embarass the client by discussing this.
Salvage co: We know you need food, clothing, A new tractor. We could have given you any of these trivial things as gift's BUT........ We decided instead to treat you with A gift of cancer and alcoholism.
Don't know how often a grounding takes place but buoyancy tanks could be placed around the world ready for disaster. Strap em on and pump water out. Then tow it. Time is of the essence. Storms etc.
Lot of dangerous unsafe things going on here ! Initial connection - Tow Wire whipping across aft deck & nearly lifting a hatch Cover. NO safety Gear ? The list goes on. Very little Coal actually discharged & ship easily refloated ? Where were the Ground Reaction Figures ? Etc ......
They do seem unsafe, in other videos they are in a stormy north sea on a half sunken ship without survival suits... But as for the coal they did say almost all of it was removed over 12 days

No harm except for the cigarettes and booze.

Thank you for considering the local population. It was nice to see the workers and the people in the village together.

Wonderful video. 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸
Brilliant job, as you would expect from one of the few companies capable of doing this level of work - (funnily enough both Dutch, but of course)
I love it when a plan comes together !
X rated at the end. Cool !!!
Only in "sophisticated" society is the human body offensive, it never used to be until religion came along.
all i can see talking about tractor, 20:54 no one talk about it?
I'd not have watched this had I known I'd be subjected to micronesians singing Achey Breaky ❤️.
I should have called these guys to try salvage my marriage 😂
They will send a Two Days Lover right away :)
not if you have to get her cargo out with a crane
Very well done although I was amazed at Weldors not having proper helmet protection. No excuse for that.
1:33 I have that same Fork Lift in my shop now.
Classic Salvage tug.
My favourite part of the world.
Why did it Run aground? Is there an accident report anywhere?.

@@thebigmacd Thats crazy i just thought it was a joke! thanks for the reference
How could you thumbs down 👇 this video, it has islanders
They looked up the ship's statistics in a BOOK!!!!
Dear God....Achy Breaky Heart. Civilization has destroyed them.
Buddy.. In a crane.. being lifted by a crane.. over the ocean... safety third!
no no no they dont have a word for safety in the native language
he is a man, he does not abandon his vessel in front of the enemy, my crane is my pride, we go together or we do not go at all
Did I just hear "Achy Breaky Heart" at 10:00??
Sadly Yes.
It's sad to think that a tune like that would be so readily accepted by these islanders. Surely they would be better off with some Rush or Pink Floyd and/or Jimi Hendrix !
@@SnowTiger45 That's just personal preference.I like the choice.
New Rule when doing public relations with 3rd world communities:
No drugs.
You know, I somewhat agree. When I saw the gifts to the islanders included cigs and booze, it didn't sit well with me. But I understand the thinking behind same.
Cigs and beer. lol !!!
And yes, part of this video reminded me of the movie "The Bounty". Island paradise found!
Around 17:50, someone forgot to secure the hatch!
10:56 he is expecting some company eh down in those tanks , that's a big knife buddy
Nothing like gifting tribal chiefs with boxes of Marlboro Reds lol
The gift of booze and smokes. Not dissimilar from the typical pilot greasing prior to a Suez Canal transit.
radiobot booze and smokes, that sound familiar
Somethings are universal currency. It's difficult to go wrong with premium U.S. cigs and Caribbean rum!
@mach one My Grandfather was up there around that time too - my grandmother told me it was "bad for him", because he drank like a fish up there. Lol, he still made it to almost 80.
That's nothing. They edited out all the guns and ammo changing hands !!
These videos are awesome but the skipping gives me nausea.
Paused video to comment- I would be the guy fixing the tractor, wouldn't have to ask me!
Visit a pristine island and give the locals 2 of the worst vices of humanity, alcohol and cigarettes.
Great video. These islands had cargo cults years back brought about by ships getting washed up on the reefs.
9 months later the island got population growth of some half Dutch. There are still some places called paradis on this earth.
i rolled down the comments waiting for this,i can go now
gifts like rechargeable lights or something useful and with simple maintenance instead of drugs would be a better choise...
you sir are a fucking dickhead
Sir you are so right i support you give them rechargeable
light
Looks like they had no electricity. A rechargeable flashlight would be useless when it went dead.
The cheap shake lights wernt around yet.
it was 1994, what are you talking about? idiot
So the Captain of the Oceanus kept his job… surprising
Why? Not his fault there was a power failure
The locals got $2 million us for damage to reef and corals👍
Where are they going to spend it?
most likely not fixing the tractor more smokes n booze
These are the good ol stories the young uns hear about . Doing business by FAX yo!
Singign Achy Breaky Heart? LMAO
no no no they dont have a word for safety in the native language
9:50 Medson and Henson....hahahaha
we have flown KLM many times.
20:55
Wow the Colmina is a rust bucket
That blue tarp was funny.

Often it is steering or engine issues.
Pat Sajak's side hustle at 1:30
Hope they didn't spread any diseases to those people
lol fax machine
Did you miss the telex? Now THAT is old tech!
@@vondahe LOL
No
Pay off the locals with tobacco and massive amounts of alcohol. That's what I call a leader in global relations........not.

nothing speaks like Beer and cigarettes
For places where gold won't buy you anything

It's 30yrs ago, in a remote area ... it's the wild west.
Things were just different.
I would have thought that WW II and Atomic Testing would have left the indigenous islanders with more of an attitude towards outsiders.....
Wrong island chain. We blew up the Marshall Islands, not the Carolines.
Think any of them seamen relied them island girls of their vergity
English please?? And yes, it would be not hard to think some island teenies where deflowered for the making of this video...
that's so 1992
Jh
With the 70k tons of cola landed on the toll, the people therre you have built themthelfes houses from selfmade coal bricks.
Simple just fill the ship with water this will push whatever is under it then just pump water out simple
,
LoL
This vid is a disgrace. Buying off with tobacco and booze. Its disgusting
LOL calm down, thats what the natives like.
It's 30yrs ago ... things were different.
None of these guys wear hard hats, no health and safety nazis around...?
if you are going to be crushed by masses of steel what use is one?
no candies for the kids? some funny terms they have indeed. - dewater the cargo tanks -. why not just say - pump out the water? -
