You actually got lucky. The patches of fog made those drone shots of the town and rivers look awesome. Those are some of the best pics iv'e ever seen of Passau.
I really liked seeing Passau on a snowy day. Even if you can’t go into the castle ruins, I would be happy to go in the winter. I’m ok with not having a complete itinerary. Things rarely go as planned. Thanks.
Thanks for taking us along on the scouting mission. Enjoyed the more unscripted side. We loved Passau when we visited and yes, a few days ought to do it. The Hotel Wilder Mann is wonderful (especially it's winding hallways), check it out.
I'll definitely check it out, I do heartedly plan on going back when things are more open and hopefully when the weather is wonderful. Though tbh, the crappy weather might have been worth it for the drone footage!

I will be in Germany again this coming Fall for around 20 days, and Passau is on my bucket list in order to hear the LARGEST ORGAN IN GERMANY, at the daily 30 minute free concert every noon. I'm seeking the Germanic Culture for my family heritage renewal.
Not sure if it is still there but on the confluence point they had a model of the "sun" and I think up the Inn River walk you could walk to Mercury, Venus, Earth etc I bailed out at the Earth but they certainly did all the planets We first arrived at Passau by boat from Regensburg It was an interesting journey and we passed the Walhalla and then took a train to Linz and got the boat from Linz to Passau which was interesting too. BTW the Dom has organ concerts most afternoons (in non-corona times at least) and you can hear the organ perform It is a French style organ so it is good for the grand repetoire but things like Bach and Handel that need a crisp sound don't work.
We were really sad to not be able to hear the organ. We are planning on going back this summer when the town is actually open. We will have to schedule the visit with an organ concert featuring a Romantic work.
@@NearFromHome There is a daily organ concert (I cannot remember when) and you get a FULL range of works sadly including Bach as to my ears it isn't crisp enough This is more of an organ aficionado talking and one who's heard Bach and Handel on small "sparrows nest organs" the organs they were written for. It is a stupendous organ and a fascinating baroquised cathedral

Just FYI. Passau also had a roman kastell on the inn river side on its location which is the old town of Passau is nowadays a museum about it. The Veste Oberhaus, the big castle structure overshadowing Passau, has a cool museum as well. On the austrian side, near Breiteich is a little Gasthaus/Cafe called "Blaas" that makes delicious variations on Palatschinken /Pancakes. Passau in general is very beautiful, nowadays even more after they fixed the city center from its 70s aesthetics. I recommend to visit it during concert/mass time in the Stephansdom. It doesn't just have an organ with a lot of pipes it once was the biggest organ in the world, and in my heart...it still is. even tho the worlds biggest organ is now in some bigass ugly modern church in LA. After mass/concert its nice to have a stroll back through the narrow street down west through the "Fußgängerzone" At the head of the pedestrian zone there is the Votivkirche where you can find right next to it on its left side, the "Heilig-geist Stiftsstube" a great restaurant that i always loved to visit when i was in town. (Just anecdotically...i had my very first Döner there...and it is still as of yet the best Döner i ever had... i miss it.) Generally i think the area back there (Meaning the border area to the Czech Republic) deserves more recognition for its beauty. Most travellers, bloggers or tourists only head to upper bavaria and the typical touristy instagram spots. But for example the bavarian national forest is an absolute gem. There is Riedelhütte which had its own glass manufacturers since the middle ages and which was the only not italian place that knew how Murano glass was produced because centuries ago the Riedelhütte glassblowers learned their trade from there and took it to the bavarian forest before it was forbidden in Murano to share with outsiders. Or Klingenbrunn and its trainstation a bit further into the forest which during winter times often has the lowest temperatures in germany. Spiegelau, with its beautiful forest play ground (awesome place to grow up ...i speak from experience) and its "Wald - Kneipanlage" where you can wade through the Schwarzach and cool down. or the National forest close by with the enclosures for Wolves, Bears, Wisent (European Bison), Lynx, Eagle owl, and so on. Fun fact. The area of the bavarian forest is known for its gold mining and gold washing. there are still spots around where you can wash gold out of the rivers and streams. You like hiking? how about the Arber or the Großer Rachel with its Rachel lake, or the Lusen (conveniently right next to the national park) with its rocky top that lets you look out over the bavarian and bohemian forest. (definitely my favourite mountain as i grew up in Spiegelau) If you decide to visit the area, i'd gladly tell you about some local spaces, if you need information.
