The story of Marshal Major Taylor is really interesting, I wish I had been able to see the exhibit! As an Indy resident, it’s interesting how there’s many examples of tributes of him around the city but I had never heard about him before

I have first edition copy of his book which is very well written! Marshall Taylor was the first African American with a World Title in Any Sport. Well before boxing, baseball, football, or basketball, so why aren't Africans and African-Americans pro-cyclists contending for a win at Tour de France?

Thanks for sharing, Ernest! It's awesome that you have a first edition copy of Major Taylor's book. As for your question about participation in cycling, it's a bit complex. On the one hand, access to riding clubs is crucial. Role models are also important, as they provide young people with a visible path to success in the sport. It's a multifaceted issue, but it would be great to see more Black cyclists at the elite levels. Then, they might be more competitive for major titles.

During trip to DRC I bicycle primary transport in rainforest, but the access to good equipment was extremely poor. I visited with DRC Olympic cycling coach and team in Kinshasa and found strong riders on relative junk to ride on.

Taylor's story is yet another one which makes clear people of African descent in the US would do well to abandon the idea that this country will ever live up to its ideals, and accept the sobering (and all to often, deadly) reality that life is better outside of America than within it (for us), as this is the sad, unchanging reality of who/what America is.

While the majority of your retelling of Major Taylor's life if accurate the comment about Taylor suffering from alcoholism is not true. Taylor abstained from drinking his entire life.
