  • With one stomp of his foot, Zhong Lin Wang illuminates a thousand LED bulbs--with no batteries or power cord. A professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Wang is using what's technically known as the triboelectric effect to create surprising amounts of electric power by rubbing or touching two different materials together.

    That's cool. Lay a bunch of these on busy roads and walkway traffics. Our steps and wheels can provide the energy we need with these. And when it rains, the pressure from the raindrops will do the work for us.

      The shortcoming in these TEG devices is their extremely low current output. But their future is bright.

    This technology is amazing and it should already be fully integrated into all levels of society, especially for struggling or developing communities.

    I was thinking about this idea for a couple months in my senior year. Never really tried to go any deeper than "wouldn't it be neat if there were like, magnets in car handles and wheels or something to generate electrical currents". Glad to see this is being sought after!

      it's make sense if a research take a lot of time, power and.....money, which all of those can not be free, especially the last one, so the professor rely on any available source of income to be able to start or continue his project, and most of time the source comes from either the university, government, or business, and as you know that in big countries...business play major role of the country well being, then the professor my not continue his project or maybe already finished it and not doing any further action, due to relationship with business world
      why suspecting the business world? see Elon Musk, he keeps doing the breakthrough, and I doubt he's spend most of his time testing stuff in a lab, and he's from the business side,
      if you want to know how hard it is for a brilliant scientist to make his idea comes true without having power or money, check Nikola Tesla

      Better to focus on the fact that although new developments can take longer than hoped/ expected, this is AMAZING ingenuity that is worth MUCH time to pursue and develop❣️❣️❣️. I pray for continued success and safety of scientists to see this to fruition😇❣️🙏 ...and look forward to experiencing it!

      Maybe it is more like a device that fits into any shoe because I doubt shoe manufacturers would be up to the task of warranting electronics in shoes. That makes more sense. But the key is efficient storage on a nanoscale.

    Could you add it to solar panels to make them more efficient?

    • @wwabete2009
      @wwabete2009 4 месяца назад

      Just add some well designed Peltier devise and some well thought optimized thermoradiative diode and you improve the solar panel's efficiency to new heights of performance. Triboelectric generators have been here as long as I can remember. They can produce very high volts to tens of thousands of volts but their currents still remain terriblly low. Some researchers have been working on switched-capacitor-convertors based on fractal design to come out of this impasse. It seems quite promising.

    • @Ixomis

      nowhere near what he suggested. Really bad reprudcability. as an experiment it's cool but for real world use on a large scale not usefull and very inefficient but for nanogenerators it's quite a big thing.

    • @songshineoriginalmusic
      @songshineoriginalmusic 3 года назад

      There is nothing in the video about harvesting energy, which I take to mean storing the energy. That is he big rub, storing it efficiently for later use. This is all done in the moment without battery backup.
