I picked up a '77 Hobie 14 a few weeks ago and am just getting into dialing it into the 21st century. The hulls are in good shape. I rebuilt the rudder mechanisms and took the frame apart. Only one corner casting gave me trouble but I got it off eventually. Adding a dolphin striker is next on the list along with adding some sacrificial fiberglass along the keels for beaching and ordinary wear and tear. The mast is dead straight. I think the sail might be original as it has the smaller number of panels (5 instead of 6?). It's still useable for daysailing which is amazing. I do need some battens however. I've only got the longest one at this point. A fun project. I might not get it in the water until next spring. Good to have Joe's videos to watch during the cold months.🐬
You are going to have a lot of fun. I fixed up an old 125 when I started sailing as a teenager and it taught me heaps through trial and error. It's when I learnt to fibreglass, paint and repair trapeze wire, mast etc. Can't beat sailing a Hobie cat for sheer fun. If you have issues tacking and get caught in irons, try leaving the jib sheeted until the wind pushes the bow across and then release it. Have heaps of fun!👍😎🇦🇺
@@Spartan902 Especially fun so far has been separating the castings from the pylons. :-) It's amazing how such a thin film of oxide can bind those things together...it's all cleaned up now and everything fits back together like it should.
Good wind, good race! I crewed on the Pacific in front of you at the beginning, managed to come in second after the C2. Staying further off the coast before approaching the rock payed off ;) Second stay at Vasiliki, first week of cat tuition, first rock race (with an awesome and experienced helm I should add). Good times! Enjoyed the video, thanks
Great Video! I noticed that your boom is separated from the tack of the sail. Is that because the boom would end up near the rope slot in the mast? I like the loose footed sail on the Hobie 14!
awewome.vid like every one...i am about to buy a new harnes, is yours the EXO harnes 3.0? and what about this slim buoyancy aid? would you recomend it?
Yes, the harness is the EXO 3.0 - so far so good, very comfortable. The BA is the impact vest 50N it's very good, although I think in hindsight i should have got the L rather than the XL.

Great stuff! Fun times ahead - nice to bring a boat like that back to life.
Maybe you could photo the process for Show Us Your Cat?
Ur doing a terrific job 😊

Joe! The man!!
🤩
Amazing video ! Go Fast On Water spirit we love it
Thanks!!!

It's because of the design of the OS3 EVO sail. The luff is a little shorter so an extension is added to allow the boom into the mast track.
Very nice the speed 🍻
Thanks!!!
Do you use the spi the big sail you add like a jib cuz I’ve never seen you use one in your vids
yes. Here's an example: ruclips.net/video/lnqbzhkkYNs/видео.html
‘H14 fun!! Mine is back online!
Oh yes, such a fun boat - Will yours be featuring on the speed stick?

@@JoyriderTV ok.many thx ....
audio sound is amazing, wish I could afford that mic
Yes, it's changed the quality of the videos more than anything!
yeah that's right.
you know it!!!
Impressive
well, thank you!!
Masterful micromanagement of the Hobie 14, I must say 🤨🫡👍 Exactly what the 14 demands 👌
Thanks very much. She seemed to respond appropriately!
where did you come in the race?
First in the Hobie 14 fleet!!! But 4th overall - beaten by a C2, Tiger and Pacific
how many people have sailed at 15 knts upwind? monohulls suck
I think the 15 was more of a close reach but still........
Wind speed? Gusts? If you remember.
Wind around 18 knots with gusts up to 25.... as I remember...
