Yup, Kids mostly clean their classroom (and the halls to some extent). Most schools that a groundskeeper, that tends the school grounds and parts of the buildings that Kids don't clean.
Also grades are a very serious thing in Japan. The better your grades, the better highschool you can get into, and thus the better college you can get into. There are some jobs that won't even look at the rest of your application once they look where you went to school. Think of the difference between Stanford and a state college, and that starts in Highschool in Japan.
As someone who worked at public schools in Japan, I can verify these, except teachers getting national holidays off, they really only get new years off in some schools

I think the social and performance pressure is really far above that worry. Kids snapping and committing suicide use to be a really large problem (though it has gotten better). Also kids breaking and then not leaving their room/home is another issue.
This is all generally true, although school uniform rules vary a lot by school. Private schools tend to have stricter rules and uniforms and usually start in elementary school. Public schools often have no official uniform, although there are dress codes and rules.
Personally speaking from experience, I can say it’s nothing like in anime. For example, the roof is locked at all times expect emergencies. We practice sports for 6 times a week. Entrance exam material is not taught in schools, rather most students go to a cram school otherwise known as a juku
There are at least one janitor per school. They fix the things and maintain the buildings, clean the rest of rooms that the students don't (teacher's and principals room, etc), and do the same works as the other countries' janitors do. And please don't call them the student janitors. They just clean where they use including the student bathrooms.
I get that...I went to school in Jamaica, where all the school had dress code, and private schools with dress code. I would've been okay with it, but I'd rather wear my own clothes. Personal preference, really.

Honstly, I like wearing a uniform. When I moved from London to Rome 2 years ago, I had massive issues with choosing what to wear. Me and my mum often argue on what I should wear because I have a comepltely different taste to hers. Going out for shopping is literally a nightmare for me. I also just genuinely like the feeling of wearing a suit. I've gotta say that I enjoyed wearing a uniform way more than I enjoyed wearing my casual clothes ngl
I went to a Japanese school for 3 years. They should have mentioned? Students have to wear slipper like sneakers shoes called Uwabaki. When? You are inside the school building at all times. Except for a few special occasions. You don't have to wear them on that day.
The janitor part mostly right, but wrong. every school has one handy man that acts like an all-purpose janitor that also fixes things, not just cleans.
The uniform thing also happens here in Trinidad. Head to toe, there are rules about what you can wear and how. Uniforms are a plus though, as it takes the pressure off of kids, who can't afford the 'best' of everything. So they don't feel alienated (at least in that way).
The best way to set standards is through free market competition. Each school selects text books from publishers that are in competition with each other. Parents vote with their feet if a schools standards are not up to scratch.

You cannot bring your cellphone as it is considered as a distraction. You would also need to walk home, and try to memorize where you live. (Or, you can take a bus. Don’t worry, 6+ children can travel alone. You cannot slouch around in cleaning time.
They do not advance if their grades are terrible or skipped school frequently. I know this based on my experience and some of my classmates didn’t get to advance.

Haha, this is more similar to my school in New Zealand. We have a really strict dress code - on hairstyles, shoes, uniform and even on mufti days. The students must have their hair up, but if it's too short it can't. Your hair can't be in a bun, or messy. Only one type of earring is allowed. We have mufti days about 3 times a year, and we can only wear blue, pink, yellow or purple during those days. There's more, but that's the jist of it, lol.

Also, high school is not compulsory like in other countries. That's why high schools can be so selective. Despite not being compulsory nearly everyone goes. I think it's like 99% of people go on to high school or something like that.

They basically just get august off. For reference, imagine if summer school in american schools was mandatory. That's how long the school year is.
