What I like about your videos is that the description already has the outcome. I'm watching this from the National Bookstore (a book and school supplies shop) and I have no time to scan through a lot of suggestions. I trust you in this! 😂
The red and especially blue Signo reactivates nicely with a wet q-tip. Have you ever tried reactivating water based white gel pens over color and blending it? I plan to try.
Hey thanks for doing this !! Your really doing a wonderful job and I find all your fountain pen stuff really useful ! Also really great to see a artist reviewing fountain pens it helps a ton !!
Thank you for the information on the pens before I decide what will work best for my art. I have a Uniball white and think I will purchase a Pentel pen also.
Thank you so much for this video. I'm on a limited budget and over the years have wasted money ( in my mind) on white gel pens. After seeing your video and getting a birthday gift card from my husband I purchased the white Gelly Roll and the Pilot G-2 white pen. I love both but the Gelly is my absolute favorite. I haven't had the clogs and drips like the other pens I have used. This brings me tons of warm fuzzy feelings. :)
I personally love Derwent's white paint pen! Its tip is not much If any thicker than a gel pen ... at least the one I own, they may do different sizes? And it's opacity is thicker than gel pens too! 😊
I have used the Uni-Ball Signo, and liked it alot. But recently, it ran out so I went to my local store (It sells toys, stationary supplies, food, cosmetics and socks. Their socks are great btw) and they only had the Pentel one. I think they are both good. But I'll use the pentel one in the future cause its cheaper than the signo.
I've been having problems with skipping on the uniball signo (I bought multiple times) though I love the opacity. I just found the Pentel Hybrid in 1.0 in a sort of mom and pop stationary store here in Paris. I love that it doesn't skip but it isn't as opaque as I want it to be. Still, I appreciate and like it.
Hey Teoh, I'm new to drawing and sketching and watercolor, and your videos are so incredibly helpful and fun. You're the best! Love the channel, thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks so much for this! I love doing watercolor art but am embarrassed to say that I could never figure out how people got these beautiful white marks in their paintings/illustrations. Your artwork is really lovely. I can't wait to try this.
I use prismacolors makers to lay down color on my cartoonist/anime style drawings and then shade in wax based pencils. I have been using zig cartoonist ink and a calligraphy brush to add white shines when I am finished but I'd love for one of these pens to work for me. The wax based pencils can make it troublesome for me.
Very useful videos ! sometimes it is difficult to find the items you show in France, not the white pens , but for example the fountain pens.... But I like very much looking at your clear videos! Thank you so much!
I have several white gel pens (uni ball included). After not using them for a while, they simply do not work anymore although I can see that the well is full of white ink. Do have a tip to get it going again??
After watching some of your recent videos and seeing you use the Uniball white gel pens I decided to order some. I have a five pack of these and a Midori Spiral Ring Notebook Camel which has acid free kraft paper. I wanted to experiment a little with the kraft paper with colored pencils. Guaranteed delivery of those this Sunday the 6th too. I'm a happy camper right now lol! ^_^ I also recently got a Canson XL watercolor pad with 100 sheets for practicing. I just don't like their XL Mix Media paper for watercolors. The pattern would annoy me and I don't anything that would make me not want to practice. At least the XL Watercolor pad has a cold press irregular pattern from what I can see. I know you wanna use up the XL Mix Media pad, but I don't see how you keep from getting irritated with it.
Hi teoh, I have bought two pentel pens and they both clog brand new after one use over watercolor, were I live theres not too much choices, so im stuck with the pentel, what do you think it went wrong? (lukas watercolor, winsor and newton hot pressed paper)
Dear friend, why compresión video you used For upload youtube? And What camera you used ti recording video? ... thanks For response. ( my english is very bad, i am chilean.. from Chile) quiero decir , que compresión de video usas para subir y codificar? Y que cámara usas? Es que te quedan súper nítidos tus videos , saludos desde Chile.
I have a tricky question. So I am doing a lot of Pigment Ink drawings with an Artling pen. And I bought also a Hybrid Gel Grip DX pen, so when I made a miskake I could overwrite it and it works wonders. But then I bought some Gel Pens in different colors and the colors can't get through. What is your suggestion? Should I buy Pigma Ink Micron from Sakura in different colors? Do they overwrite the gel pen well??? I am tempted to buy them, but then again if it doesn't work I don't want to spend too much money on them. Christina.
I'm surpised the Uni Posca, either the PC-1MR or the PC-1M, didn't make the list. I need to find that Signo UM-153 along with its finer sibling, the UM-120 AC.
A useful overview of some white gel pens. One question: Is it possible to overpaint a white gel spot with watercolour if I accidently did something wrong or not so pretty?
Thank you so much. I have learned so much from you. Even if I don't think I'll be interested, not surprisingly I always am! How do you know what we need to know☺️
I love Posca's because they come in three sized tips and can manipulate the bright whites and colors in various ways. Because they are acrylic, I use them after I do watercolor and before oils.
Sorry I have taken so long to reply. I tried to resuscitate the white gel pens in hot water but no luck. Three are simply dried out and I will have to order more. I'll get the Pentel K108 Hybrid Roller . Thanks a lot Teoh.
+RealVincetti You can do it either way. Usually for me, I use ink then watercolour. If I want extra contrast in some areas, I will have ink over the water again. But when you go over with ink, you have to be careful if you want to follow the original line.
I have this white paint thingy that I have to shake first,,, I've just bought it but whenever I press hard on it it flows alot and ruins my painting🙄🙄🙄 so how shall I use it

It's good to try different brands 😁
+Marta Gillette Check out the pen names in the video description if you've missed them in the video.
Hey do you know some stores that have the gel pens?
Try Jetpens, Goulet Pens, Amazon, eBay.

I love the Uni-ball signo! I use it all the time.
Blue Plague But they are quite expensive right? It cost about 4 dollars to buy it in my country
Here in my country i costs nearly 2 bucks i guess, but compare to others i like them the most
I bought them after few months it won't write properly anymore 😕 not sure if I got a bad batch or that's how it is

There is another one that one of my lecturer recommended... which is the Uni Posca. you can give it a try ^^
+kurapica365 Thanks for the suggestion!
Ideal timing, I was searching for this particular advice
Thank you for the review. I'm seeing the Uniball Signo in most watercolor videos.
Hey Teoh, I'm new to drawing and sketching and watercolor, and your videos are so incredibly helpful and fun. You're the best! Love the channel, thanks so much for sharing.
This was so creative. LOVE IT!

This is such a useful video! It covered exactly what I needed to know. Thanks for posting this (though I know it was a few years ago ;) )
+Meredith Sexton I'm glad you found it helpful 😁
Pretty good i have great need of white pens and markers
Uni paint marker oil based works best on nonporous surface. Sakura gelly roll is the best.
+Nagashree N I haven't tried those oil based white markers yet.
Thanks Teoh will give it a try and let you know.
I didn't even think about using a white pen on watercolours as I've mostly been using it in my ink or marker drawings. Thanks for the tips!
+PlannerBug TV Thanks!
Great video. Thanks for sharing!

+Bettinabrig You can try eBay (for Japanese pens), Pen Chalet or Goulet Pens. I bought the Uniball white pen on eBay.
+Teoh Yi Chie thank You very much I found jinhao pen... May be I will try it....
I have several white gel pens (uni ball included). After not using them for a while, they simply do not work anymore although I can see that the well is full of white ink. Do have a tip to get it going again??
+Chammi Kaiser Try putting the metal tip into hot water and see if it can get the ink to flow again. Let me know if it works.
Amazing video with great artistic ideas
Can we use these gel pens over gouache instead of watercolor?
You can

Cool. Have fun drawing. I might want to check out those Canson XL watercolor paper also. Could be good to use for demos on RUclips. :-P
Well it feels like your normal cold press to me. I don't think there'd be any weird pattern.
Hi teoh, I have bought two pentel pens and they both clog brand new after one use over watercolor, were I live theres not too much choices, so im stuck with the pentel, what do you think it went wrong? (lukas watercolor, winsor and newton hot pressed paper)
Sometimes the ink flow of such white gel pens aren't that good. I have clogging problems too at times.
You should try the American Crafts Galaxy markers! They do not need to be shaken and they are like a PAINT PEN! But no shaking! You would love it!
Hello I just wondering which white pen best for cat's whiskers? And also cats eyes
Also good video! 👍
Thanks for this info - it helps to know what is NOT useful and what IS. Thanks again!!
Thanks :-D
I'm so jealous that you're in Singapore. My favourite place in all the world. I will live there one day.

Great video! Thanks!
how do u make ur uni-ball signo work? mine sometimes won't work tia
+theicecoldartist If the ink is stuck, try cleaning the tip to clear away the dry bits.

is the uniball good for using on copics or finecolour markers when theyre dry?
ah thanks, this was great!
My uniball signo angelic white keeps bleeding and "sucking" the ink under it. Even over my waterproof unipin :/
A useful overview of some white gel pens. One question: Is it possible to overpaint a white gel spot with watercolour if I accidently did something wrong or not so pretty?
+Eric Sareyka It's not possible to paint over the white gel. It's better to use it only at the last stage for touch up.
hi! did you get the uniball white pen in singapore? I checked a few bookstores here but they only carry the colour ones
amILUNatic check online. A bookstore would have stuff more geared writers than artists.
Thank you so much. I have learned so much from you. Even if I don't think I'll be interested, not surprisingly I always am! How do you know what we need to know☺️
+Zeldajane Farquald Thanks. I just come up with random ideas and make short videos of them. LOL.
What do you think of Sakura Gelly Roll pens?
They are good. Smooth. Worth the money.
Teoh Yi Chie Enjoyed your video. Was thinking of just getting one set of markers to try in my art. Might try the Gelly Rolls...
Thank you so much!
Just wondering, do you ever use white gouache in your watercolor sketches for touch ups?
Have you tried Posca and Sakura Gelly Roll pens? I think Posca is the most opaque.
+Susan Art I have not tried those before.
Strangely, some of these white gel pens are more expensive compared to black ink pens
And what about sakura gel pen? Will it work well on watercolors?
Works well. I use that too.
Teoh Yi Chie thanks a lot!
There were two Uniballs. Which one did you paint the windows with? Model number needed so I can order it. Thanks again.
Uni-ball Signo UM-153 with 0.7 line

Teoh you need to try the Paper Yupo Paper because you’re the master.....
This is useful. Thank U very much.
+Don't Be Sad Thanks!
Which two did you like? I'd like to order them...thanks. Good video.
+jeane harris I like the one from Uniball. It's thicker. www.parkablogs.com/content/using-white-gel-pens-watercolour
I love all your videos! :)
+Amna Bashary Thanks 😁
I have this white paint thingy that I have to shake first,,, I've just bought it but whenever I press hard on it it flows alot and ruins my painting🙄🙄🙄 so how shall I use it
+Manar Al-tamimi That is a paint marker. You have to treat it like you are using paint with a brush.
Teoh Yi Chie thank you so much 😊
why don't you use a strait edge?
Have you tried the sakura gelly roll ?
I've not used those. Are they good?
+Teoh Yi Chie I haven't used those too. But some says its good but not as opaque as the uniball signo
Are the gel pens waterproof and archival?
+Bestbrushstroke The Uniball Signo one should be. I only use these at the last stage.
Thank you for reply.
hi, wht type black pen u use on?
Fountain pen with waterproof ink, eg Noodlers Bulletproof Black ink
Teoh Yi Chie Ouhhh..thanks:)
what watercolours are you using ?
+Sara sofia Espinoza wupuy I can't remember. Probably Winsor Newton, or Daniel Smith
PIZZA & B€€R
Very helpful video. Exactly what I was looking for! :)
Yesterday i bought uni paint marker 👀💕

Another reason to NOT use the oil-based white marker...
Oil attacks the paper quite badly. You ruin any archival qualities your picture might have had as soon as you put oil on.
One thing I haven't seen you do in your videos... The sunshine test.
A few years ago, I did the test. And I was surprised at the results.
This is the test...
Take two sheets of acid-free, archival quality paper. Use every ink, pigment, paint that you rely on for your work. Make labelled swatches of everything. Whatever you do on one sheet, do it on the other, so you've got a reference duplicate.
Now, put the date on both sheets. Put one in a light-proof drawer. Tape the other sheet on a window that receives maximum sunlight.
Wait a month.
Compare both sheets.
You'll immediately notice that anything that came out of a ballpoint pen will be faded. Anything from a student range of pigments will be a different colour.
Return the sheets to their respective places.
Come back in six months.
Only your top archival quality pigment based India ink will still look fresh. Everything else will be slightly or significantly faded.
All ballpoint lines will be invisible. As if they were never there. That includes Uniball black ink, by the way.
My recommendation is that you should give up on the ballpoint pens. All of them.
I settled on using Higgins Eternal India Ink.
I worked only in black, so I haven't tested pigments. But I strongly urge you to test all of your pigments too.
(This test is irrelevant if you scan or digitise every picture immediately, and only ever sell prints. But if you actually care about originals, and archiving them, you'll have to change your ways.)
+Roy Blumenthal By Uniball black ink, do you mean their ballpoint ink or liquid ink. I know ballpoint pens don't use pigment inks. They are still some sort of dye based ink.
However, the are some disposable pens from Uniball that actually use pigment ink.

Hi Teoh...
I don't mean the Uniball dipping inks. I mean their ballpoint pens. Even the ones that claim to be permanent.
Best bet is to do the sunshine test and make sure that the ink you're depending on is actually archival.
I guarantee that you'll be more than a bit surprised by some of the results.
Oh... It occurs to me...
While you're setting up the test, do FOUR sheets of paper... 2 archival acid-free, 2 photocopy paper.
That way you get to see the effects over time of non-archival paper on pigment. Bond paper has some acid in it. So you should see deterioration.
+Teoh Yi Chie

Clever!
there's some sort of feedback (like a gnawing high-pitch squeal) throughout your video that makes it unbearable. I had to stop after only a few seconds it was so bad. no idea what's causing it but thought I should let you know.
