    BoP will always favour one car and I reckon they will never get it right especially as the FIA is known for playing politics behind closed doors. As you said, each win now has to be checked against the BoP and not just how good a teams car was but how badly nerfed were the other teams which takes a little of the merit away.

    • @JerkingwithJesus
      @JerkingwithJesus 2 месяца назад

      Ya but I'd rather have the current leman/prototype racing than the past when only 2 or 1 competitors were racing. Like you said politics are at play and the ones that matter are for keeping the car companies invested in the sport happy. Low cost and close racing in a racing sport with so little eyes on it is needed for longevity. F1 can have a redbull 2023 season and be great with it because of the amount of eyes on that motorsport but endurance racing is one of the small view count motorsports that are at the elite side of things. What we have now is a golden period let's just enjoy it like the late 90's period.

      You could say the same for the diesel or hybrid LMP1s that were given an advantage over gasoline non hybrids. This problem is also prevalent in other motorsports, where one type of car is given an advantage over another. Politics have always been part of motorsports since the beginning. BOP just makes sure all configurations get a chance of winning instead of just one. Look at V8 supercars, where they currently have parity issues because they're pitting two very different types of engines against each other. Imagine the headache caused by Group A to the ATCC rulemakers trying to make a competitive field back then since it had AWD coupes, rotary lights, 4 door sedans, etc. All of that can be solved with BOP, but then all those who complained about parity will now complain about BOP.

      The point is the rules (especially LMH) are loose. They give you specific max/min downforce/drag ratio, but you can do whatever you want to the car. That why BoP are in play or it becomes both one horse race, and who can spending most win. That the last thing they wanted for fledgling formula. But I guess in times, some of these might be relaxed and performance will increase anyway, just it slower than open-ended competition

    Peugeot don't have an advantage with the 150kph hybrid deployment as they have a square tyre set up, so because they run a thinner rear tyre where most the power is delivered, they can release their hybrid to the front wheels at a lower speed than the rest. Their bop was definitely a big factor with their competitive drive, but not the 150kph vs 190kph hybrid deployment speed.

      No, because the sporting regulations and the technical regulations serve different requirements. If you took one element away, you'd have a very different competition.
      The technical regulations allow for a wide variety of designs to built depending on how much or how little the manufacturers want to build in house.
      The sporting regulations make cars with a less-than-optimal performance viable.

The fact that we have to judge every race result against a BoP sheet when given no serious on-track drama (talking mostly about retirements, reliability, bad strategy calls etc) is just sad. F1 cost cap is probably the only BoP system I find has potential to not be annoying to fans of the engineering side of motorsports. It's not perfect, but it's not "OK this team won so let's see how big of an advantage they got from BoP" levels of annoying while being low maintenance and much more consistent than completely unverifiable lap-time simulations. You also have less of a problem with teams running AWOL with budget since loopholes for shell companies/subcontractors could be patched out and managed. Plus, if you're only using it on one series you'll never be able to experiment and find out what sort of restrictions make it work better or worse and how to police it properly.
    BMW really needs to get their stuff together as well, the engine they chose has good potential and they've always had a knack for building the most ridiculous engines for any series they choose to race in. It's sad that they can't get the package to work properly and achieve decent pace. I don't want to see them abandon another series when they're an inch away from winning, unless they want their brand to be forever associated with how they fumbled the 2008 F1 season.

    The BOP is just based on one man's likes/ dislikes. It's good when it is help up to standard. They need to find a netter way to rate the BOP so that the cars are even everywhere.

    I liked the race, but I think bop is the thing they should get rid of. It is good for making the show and making the slowest car surprisingly fast in the next race. But it ruins the nature of Motorsport as a competition between drivers and engineers itself. Now it seems like you don’t need to have well qualified engineers and race car designers to win the races and it makes me feel like watching the wrestling show where the winner is chosen even before the start.

      @@JoshuaC923 I think your opinion is only half true, because racing is already has around a hundred years of history, and there were interesting races with many different battles in all the categories of racing.
      Just as example, Peugeot car is obviously slower than their team was expecting (not to mention that the attempt to build the wingless car is really brave), but having bop like here in Qatar in all the races last year, they wouldn’t even need to make an evo version of 9X8 because bop is the thing that helps them.
      So my opinion is that bop kills the engineering part of the sport and racing becomes more artificial
