Did the Catholic Church "Change the Sabbath"?

  • www.SecretInfoC... You sometimes encounter the charge that the Catholic Church wrongly "changed the sabbath" from Saturday to Sunday. This claim is often made by Seventh-Day Adventists, for example. But even if one isn't accusing the Church of wrongdoing, the question can still arise: Why do Catholics worship on Sunday rather than Saturday? Here's the story . . .
    What Day the Sabbath Is
First, let's clear away a potential source of confusion. While it's true that people sometimes speak of Sunday as "the Christian sabbath," this is a loose way of speaking. Strictly speaking, the sabbath is the day it always was--Saturday--though it should be noted that traditionally Jewish people have celebrated the sabbath from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. Sunday is a distinct day, which follows the sabbath. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains:
2175 Sunday is expressly distinguished from the sabbath which it follows chronologically every week; for Christians its ceremonial observance replaces that of the sabbath. In Christ's Passover, Sunday fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish sabbath and announces man's eternal rest in God. For worship under the Law prepared for the mystery of Christ, and what was done there prefigured some aspects of Christ.
    Why We Celebrate Sunday
That same paragraph explains why we celebrate on Sunday. For Christians the ceremonial observance of Sunday replaces that of the sabbath. Properly speaking, we're not celebrating the sabbath on Sunday. We're celebrating something else, but it's something that the sabbath points toward. As the Catechism says, the Jewish sabbath announces man's eternal rest in God and prefigures some aspects of Christ. Sunday thus fulfills what the sabbath pointed toward.

    The Didache
"But every Lord’s day . . . gather yourselves together and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one that is at variance with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned" (Didache 14 [A.D. 70]).
    The Letter of Barnabas
"We keep the eighth day [Sunday] with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead" (Letter of Barnabas 15:6-8 [A.D. 74]).
    Ignatius of Antioch
"[T]hose who were brought up in the ancient order of things [i.e. Jews] have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in the observance of the Lord’s day, on which also our life has sprung up again by him and by his death" (Letter to the Magnesians 8 [A.D. 110]).
    Justin Martyr
"[W]e too would observe the fleshly circumcision, and the Sabbaths, and in short all the feasts, if we did not know for what reason they were enjoined [on] you-namely, on account of your transgressions and the hardness of your heart. . . . [H]ow is it, Trypho, that we would not observe those rites which do not harm us-I speak of fleshly circumcision and Sabbaths and feasts? . . . God enjoined you to keep the Sabbath, and imposed on you other precepts for a sign, as I have already said, on account of your unrighteousness and that of your fathers . . ." (Dialogue with Trypho the Jew 18, 21 [A.D. 155]).
"But Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Savior on the same day rose from the dead" (First Apology 67 [A.D. 155]).
    Tertullian
"[L]et him who contends that the Sabbath is still to be observed as a balm of salvation, and circumcision on the eighth day . . . teach us that, for the time past, righteous men kept the Sabbath or practiced circumcision, and were thus rendered ‘friends of God.’ For if circumcision purges a man, since God made Adam uncircumcised, why did he not circumcise him, even after his sinning, if circumcision purges? . . . Therefore, since God originated Adam uncircumcised and unobservant of the Sabbath, consequently his offspring also, Abel, offering him sacrifices, uncircumcised and unobservant of the Sabbath, was by him [God] commended [Gen. 4:1-7, Heb. 11:4]. . . . Noah also, uncircumcised-yes, and unobservant of the Sabbath-God freed from the deluge. For Enoch too, most righteous man, uncircumcised and unobservant of the Sabbath, he translated from this world, who did not first taste death in order that, being a candidate for eternal life, he might show us that we also may, without the burden of the law of Moses, please God" (An Answer to the Jews 2 [A.D. 203]).
    The Didascalia
"The apostles further appointed: On the first day of the week let there be service, and the reading of the holy scriptures, and the oblation [sacrifice of the Mass], because on the first day of the week [i.e., Sunday] our Lord rose from the place of the dead, and on the first day of the week he arose upon the world, and on the first day of the week he ascended up to heaven, and on the first day of the week he will appear at last with the angels of heaven" (Didascalia 2 [A.D. 225]).
    Origen
"Hence it is not possible that the [day of] rest after the Sabbath should have come into existence from the seventh [day] of our God. On the contrary, it is our Savior who, after the pattern of his own rest, caused us to be made in the likeness of his death, and hence also of his resurrection" (Commentary on John 2:28 [A.D. 229]).

‘“It is well to remind the Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, and all other Christians, that the Bible does not support them anywhere in their observance of Sunday. Sunday is an institution of the Roman Catholic Church, and those who observe the day observe a commandment of the Catholic Church.” Priest Brady, in an address, reported in the Elizabeth, NJ ‘News’ on March 18, 1903.
“Protestants … accept Sunday rather than Saturday as the day for public worship after the Catholic Church made the change… But the Protestant mind does not seem to realize that … in observing Sunday, they are accepting the authority of the spokesman for the Church, the pope.” Our Sunday Visitor, February 5th, 1950.
Deny the authority of the Church and you have no adequate or reasonable explanation or justification for the substitution of Sunday for Saturday in the Third - Protestant Fourth - Commandment of God… The Church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact.” Catholic Record, September 1, 1923.
The Faith of Milions“But since Saturday, not Sunday, is specified in the Bible, isn’t it curious that non-Catholics who profess to take their religion directly from the Bible and not the Church, observe Sunday instead of Saturday? Yes, of course, it is inconsistent; but this change was made about fifteen centuries before Protestantism was born, and by that time the custom was universally observed. They have continued the custom, even though it rests upon the authority of the Catholic Church and not upon an explicit text in the Bible. That observance remains as a reminder of the Mother Church from which the non-Catholic sects broke away - like a boy running away from home but still carrying in his pocket a picture of his mother or a lock of her hair.”The Faith of Millions
“Perhaps the boldest thing, the most revolutionary change the Church ever did, happened in the first century. The holy day, the Sabbath, was changed from Saturday to Sunday. “The Day of the Lord” (dies Dominica) was chosen, not from any directions noted in the Scriptures, but from the Church’s sense of its own power. The day of resurrection, the day of Pentecost, fifty days later, came on the first day of the week. So this would be the new Sabbath. People who think that the Scriptures should be the sole authority, should logically become 7th Day Adventists, and keep Saturday holy.” Sentinel, Pastor’s page, Saint Catherine Catholic Church, Algonac, Michigan, May 21, 1995
“If Protestants would follow the Bible, they would worship God on the Sabbath Day. In keeping the Sunday they are following a law of the Catholic Church.” Albert Smith, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, replying for the Cardinal, in a letter dated February 10, 1920.
“The observance of Sunday by the Protestants is homage they pay, in spite of themselves, to the authority of the [Catholic] Church.” Monsignor Louis Segur, ‘Plain Talk about the Protestantism of Today’, p. 213.
Soooo, all these admissions from different priests and cardinals of the Catholic Church are wrong? Sureeeee............

How about we obey what God wrote in stone with His finger at mount Sinai and now is written on our hearts the Ten Commandments..the fourth commandment says we are to remember to keep the sabbath day holy. It's not a suggestion it's a command. Jesus kept the sabbath as did his apostles even in the book of acts 40 yrs after He ascended to the Father the apostles were keeping the sabbath. We are to obey God not mans traditions.. Yeshua/Jesus had already risen from the dead and was gone by the time the women got to the tomb why? Because He rose on the Sabbath.. we must stop taking a verse out of context and building a doctrine around it... Yeshua/Jesus says in John 7:16-" my doctrine is not mine but His who sent Me...Yeshua always preached as did His disciples " repent" if you love me you will keep my commandments...

You are adding to scriptures to fit your belief system.
SunDay is sun worship because Constantin was a know sun worshiper and he is the one who sanctified Sunday worship for Christians long ago.
If a person unknowingly drinks poison they don't have to know its poison for it to kill them. The bible states that the road to hell is paved by people with good intentions so the law and understanding why things were written is very important.
Yahoshua didn't come to change the law. Christians did that so since the bible clearly says anyone who adds or takes away from this book is in danger you must question your motives.
The society you speak was always "godless". Christianity was spread through violence not peace. African slaves were forced to take a religion. American Indians were forced to take a religion. You aren't looking at history with unbiased eyes to understand how this religion became what it is.

Peer-dependent-Christians tend to take a mark that wasn't what the Creator was referring to in Deuteronomy 6 and Exodus 13. Many of us Christians are like leftist-Supreme-Court-Justices, making the Bible say whatever they want it to say. Not "opposed" (maybe grieved) that Christians keep the pagan Sunday/so-called-"Lord's Day." Indeed, teaching lies is a pretty clever satanic tactic! If Christians would observe the Feasts of the LORD / YHWH instead of the man-made-pagan-other-gods'-holidays (Christmass, Eastermass, Halloween, etc), they would know about the Feast of Weeks; there is no word "day" in the Scriptures to which Akin refers; it says the first of the weeks in the Greek. The Sabbath was made for man, so really, let's not throw it away and tell "His Church" to follow another set of Testimonies/Instructions. Teaching that Christians are no longer obliged to keep the Sabbath? Then likewise, are they not "obliged" to not murder; yet many "Chrsitian" churches adamantly support the chopping up of preborn babies. Are Christian is no longer "obliged" to keep marriage sacred; many "Christian" churches now redefine & "satanify" marriage). The USA is under judgment. And why does the Pope have a wall around his house?

Firstly Hebrews didn't use names like Saturday or Sunday.
The days are counted as numbers.
Secondly if you knew the language and had any understanding of who the Hebrews worshipped maybe then you wouldn't ask such a foolish question about "who on Earth is Yahoshua"
The term "HalleluYAH" means to praise YAH.
Ya-houshua means salvation is through YAH.
In the bible it literally says "I am called by my FATHER's NAME" .. and last time I checked the individual we are speaking about was a Hebrew not a Christian

I really see this as a non-issue. The Mosaic law includes every command given by God to the Israelites - including the Ten Commandments. These were in effect for a time, but Jesus came and fulfilled them - freeing us from its bonds. A New Covenant was given: to believe in the Son, and to love one another. This - and the minimum required actions put forth by the Magisterium of the Church - is what is required to get to Heaven.
I used to be the same way. It comes from a good place, because we all want to please God. But keeping the law is impossible for us - which is why Jesus was the only one who could do it. The Law can't be reduced to certain specific commands each person thinks they should keep. Biblically speaking, it is all one and the same, "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all".
Transgression of one command - regardless of which one - is a transgression of the whole law. So if you keep the Sabbath, you have to keep the whole law perfectly - which, as it turns out, means Jesus came for nothing.
The Old Covenant is full of wisdom, revelation and good; used primarily now for teaching virtue. Every part of it points to Christ and the New Testament. The way we believe in Christ and love our neighbour is to spiritually align our hearts and understand the purpose of Christ and The Cross. If we try and keep the Law - in any way shape or form - we don't believe in Christ; because we still don't understand why he came.
    Peace.

Did the Catholic Church "Change the Sabbath"? Yes, Here are some Catholic sources.
These quotes from Catholic sources contradict what The Catechism of the Catholic Church says about the origin of Sunday worship.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says Sunday worship is found in the New Testament, but these Catholic sources say otherwise.
VATICAN ADMITS SUNDAY IS THEIR MARK!
"Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change (Saturday Sabbath to Sunday) was her act... And the act is a MARK of her ecclesiastical authority in religious things." H.F. Thomas, Chancellor of Cardinal Gibbons. Nov. 11, 1895
"Sunday is our MARK or authority. . .the church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact" Catholic Record of London, Ontario Sept 1,1923.
( I wonder what the MARK of the Beast is? )
"The Sunday...is purely a creation of the Catholic Church." American Catholic Quarterly Review, January 1883
"Sunday...It is the law of the Catholic Church alone..." American Sentinel (Catholic) June 1893
"The Catholic church," declared Cardinal Gibbons, "by virtue of her divine mission changed the day from Saturday to Sunday." Catholic Mirror Sept. 23 1983. (Official organ of Cardinal Gibbons)
“The authority of the church could therefore not be bound to the authority of the Scriptures, because the Church had changed the Sabbath into Sunday, not by command of Christ, but by its own authority.” Canon and Tradition, p. 263
“Is not every Christian obliged to sanctify Sunday and to abstain on that day from unnecessary servile work? Is not the observance of this law among the most prominent of our sacred duties? But you may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify.” -James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of Our Fathers (1917 ed.), pp. 72, 73.
“The Bible says, Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day. The Catholic church says, No! By my divine power I abolish the Sabbath day, and command you to keep the first day of the week. And lo, the entire civilized world bows down in reverent obedience to the command of the holy Catholic church!” Father Enright, C.S.S.R. of the Redemptoral College, Kansas City, History of the Sabbath, p. 802
"Perhaps the boldest thing, the most revolutionary change the Church ever did, happened in the first century. The holy day, the Sabbath, was changed from Saturday to Sunday. "The day of the Lord" was chosen, not from any direction noted in the Scriptures, but from the Church's sense of its own power .... People who think that the Scriptures should be the sole authority, should logically become Seventh-day Adventists, and keep Saturday holy." (Saint Catherine Church Sentinel, Algonac, Michigan, May 21, 1995.)
"Sunday is a Catholic institution and its claim to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles .... From beginning to end of Scripture there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first." (Catholic Press, Sydney, Australia, August, 1990.)
But there is something still wanting to a full statement of the untenable position taken up by those sticklers for "Sabbath" observance. What right, anyhow, have these gentlemen as Protestants to lay down the law as to what is to be done or not done on Sunday? Sunday is a Catholic institution, and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles. If the "Bible and the Bible only is the religion of Protestants," if "whatever is not read therein nor maybe proved thereby" has no claim on their faith or observance, what scrap of title can they show for all their dogmatic insistence as to the requirements of the Lord's Day? From beginning to end of Scripture there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first. Thus Sunday observance is an incongruous adjunct of the Protestant faith, utterly out of keeping with its fundamental principle, and strongly suggests a religion that suffered sadly from too much hurry in the making.
If any Sabbatarian wants to know the proper method of spending the Sunday, the Catholic Church is the natural source to apply to for information. Under her direction the Sunday supplanted the Jewish Sabbath, and she is, therefore, the best fitted to settle any dispute as to its claims. Source: The Bible Echo, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Vol. 15, No. 42, Oct. 15, 1900, page 674, quoting The Catholic Press, Sydney, Australia, Aug. 25, 1900.
      The Word of God says:
Daniel 7:25, "And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and THINK TO CHANGE TIMES AND LAWS: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time."
      The word of Rome says:
"The Pope has the power to CHANGE TIMES, to ABROGATE LAWS, and to dispense with all things, even the precepts of Christ." "The Pope has the authority and often exercised it, to dispense with the COMMAND of Christ." -Decretal, de Tranlatic Episcop. Cap. (The Pope can modify divine law.) Ferraris' Ecclesiastical Dictionary.
Sunday does not fulfills what the sabbath pointed toward.
The Sabbath points towards God as creator. To sanctified it means God made the seventh day Sabbath Holy. He did not make in anyway Sunday a sanctified or holy day. The day of the Lord the seventh day Sabbath was established by God to worship Him as Creator. This is the reason for the Day of the Lord. The seventh day Sabbath.
The Saturday Sabbath is a time and a law. It is the fourth law of the Ten Commandments.
The Ten Commandments show the character of God.
Malachi 3:6 “For I am the Lord, I do not change".
Isaiah 8:20 "To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them".

I went to the website you posted, and it says that it was Constantine who changed the day of worship to Sunday? That's interesting because historical documents show that as far back as the year 70 A.D. the Church was worshipping on the Lords' Day. St Ignatius of Antioch (who was St John's disciple) also mentions in one of his writings that it is the Lords' Day that is the day of worship, and this was in 110 A.D. This was during the time when Rome was still persecuting the Church.

I’ve been in the SDA church for 25 years and they like to say John was speaking about the Sabbath when he wrote “The Lord’s Day” but I have always wondered why he wouldn’t just write “the Sabbath” if that’s what he was talking about? And why would God wait until the 1840s to tell someone the Sabbath needed to followed by Christians if it’s supposedly the thing that marks God’s true followers apart from the anti-Christ.
But, it is worth noting that observing the Sabbath is commanded in the Decalogue and we never suggest the other nine are changed or invalid, but the Sabbath command is. The weekly Sabbath points forward to Christ, but it also very specifically points back to the creation in its text

Some religious organizations (Seventh-day Adventists, Seventh-Day Baptists, and certain others) claim that Christians must not worship on Sunday but on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath. They claim that, at some unnamed time after the apostolic age, the Church "changed" the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday.
However, passages of Scripture such as Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2, Colossians 2:16-17, and Revelation 1:10 indicate that, even during New Testament times, the Sabbath is no longer binding and that Christians are to worship on the Lord’s day, Sunday, instead.
The early Church Fathers compared the observance of the Sabbath to the observance of the rite of circumcision, and from that they demonstrated that if the apostles abolished circumcision (Gal. 5:1-6), so also the observance of the Sabbath must have been abolished. The following quotations show that the first Christians understood this principle and gathered for worship on Sunday.

Acts 20:7 does not even mention the sabbath, that verse talks about breaking bread. 1 corinthians 16:2 is addressing the collection of the saints, not the sabbath. If you read 1 corinthians 16:1 which is the verse before the one you quoted, it states regarding the collections of the saints, yet nothing about the sabbath. Collosians 2:16 is reffering to the annual jewish festive sabbaths given to us after the fall of man, however the weekly sabbath was established before the fall of man in genesis 2:3, and it was sanctified and blessed. The annual jewish festive sabbaths found in leviticus chaptets 23 and 25 where given to us after the fall of man and are different from the weekly sabbath. Revelation 1:10 does not even state that sunday is the lords day, that is just an assumption made because apaprently Jesus rose from the dead on sunday, yet he rested on the sabbath in his death. The lords day is the seventh day because it was blesssed and sanctified by God in genesis 2:3 while sunday was not, as well as in isaiah 58:13 God calls the sabbath his holy day. Not once did he call sunday a holy day or the day of the lord. Circumsission was part of the mosaic law, the weekly sabbath are commandments, while we are not bound to the mosaic law, we are bound to the ten commandments which jesus himself followed and told us to follow in john 15:10 as well as in john 14:21. The first christians like paul and the disciples worshipped on saturday all throughout acts, it even mentions that it was pauls custom in acts 17:2, as well as the custom of Jesus in luke 4:16. The 4th commandment is the only commandment that starts with the words “remember”.

The Feast of Weeks begins at First Fruits/Resurrection Day as Day 1 of the 49. Look very close at 1 Corinthians 16 and Acts 20, just after we read the "first day of the week" we soon read Pentecost. There is not a single reference in the whole Bible where God instructs us to keep the first day of the week nor that He has changed the Ten Commandments. There is also no instruction to keep any day in remembrance of His resurrection. We do celebrate Easter Sunday once a year. Baptism is the closest we get in symbolizing the resurrection. Anyway can we be so bold as to unilaterally change God's Law and a day He made Holy? Mark 7:7 clearly states that we worship Him in vain keeping as doctrine the commandments of men. God Bless

Whenever you see "the first day of the week" always keep in mind the 7 Feasts/Holy Convocations from Leviticus 23. There were 3 Feast Weeks that were mandatory for all Hebrew males (Exodus 23, 34 and Deuteronomy 16). The 3 were Tabernacles (Sukkot), Unleavened Bread and Weeks. Weeks was 7 Weeks of 7 or 49 Days. The next Day was Pentecost, Day 50. You mentioned Acts 20:7, this was the "first day of the Week" of Week 1 of the 7 Weeks of 7, how do we know that? Look at Acts 20 verse 16, we see Pentecost listed there. Another Verse is 1 Corinthians 16:2, same thing here, look at 1 Corinthians 16:8, there is Pentecost again. The most classic is after the Resurrection. Jesus Rose on the "first day of the Week" of Week 1 of the 7 Weeks of 7. First Fruits is Day 1 of the 49. He appeared for 49 Days during Weeks. Read Acts 1 and 2, count backwards from Pentecost morning, there is a Sabbath's Day journey (about a 1,000 yards) then we are at Day 49 at the Ascension.

All festivals are celebrated for eight days .
The reason for this is because biblically speaking seven days is a cycle yet no seven day period is complete until the eighth day and it is mandatory from the Bible .
Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end ...
Let me give some examples .
The Passover is for seven days yet the Passover is only officially over after the wave offering of first fruits on the Sunday after feast of unleavened bread.
So to break it down .
The first day of Passover is a Sunday and the Bible declares the first Sunday a Sabbath day .
Then Passover is only over on the eighth day at the festival of first fruits .
So the beginning is Sunday and ends on Sunday .
This is why Jews celebrate for eight days .
And this is what makes Jesus Lord of the Sabbath , because he personally begins and ends Every seven day cycle .

All of the confrontations between Jesus and the Jews concerning the Sabbath had nothing to do with whether the Sabbath should be kept but rather HOW it should be kept. Large passages of new testament scripture are devoted to clearing up the turmoil that the cancellation of circumcision created. The Sabbath was of much greater importance in the Jewish economy yet there is no mention of any turmoil or even the slightest confrontation arising from it's supposed cancellation. The reason for this is because the Sabbath was never nailed to the cross. Only the ceremonial shadowy sabbaths were nailed to the cross. The 7th day Sabbath was instituted and given to mankind thousands of years before a Jew existed. You can more change or abolish the memorial of creation any more than you can change your birthday. Be very careful Jimmy. If you break the law and teach men to do the same you are working at cross purposes with God. Obedience which stems from a loving relationship with God is not legalism. That's sanctification. Satan want's nothing more than to overthrow the law of God. It is what he rebelled against from the beginning.

Whoever shall DO and teach them, the same shall be great in the Kingdom of Heaven. you are correct on sabbath day.this is an day that can not be changed...it was an day of rest, as god himself rested on the 7th day,it was also an celebration of his creation.you are correct NO MAN NOR CHURCH has had the authority to change the sabbath day...no matter what they say.if they say this, there is no truth in them.

@@MsChlogirl If you really read and understood what verse 20 of Matthew 5:20 was saying you'd understand verse 18 and 19. Here we go. For unless your righteous surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teacher of the law you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of heaven. (So what is he saying) The Pharisees and the teacher of the law standard was not good enough and you have to exceed that to get in. How can someone be more strict of the law than them. You cant!!!!! Unless its by faith in Jesus Christ. Dont just quote scripture understand it first. The young rich ruler said he kept all the law. But it wasn't enough. Why??? Galatians 3:11 But that (no) man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident for the just shall live by faith. Roman's 3:20 Therefore (no) one will be declared righteous in God sight by the works of the law rather through the law we become conscious of our sin. So what's the solution. Here it is!!! John 1:17 The law was given through Moses,, (grace and truth) came through Jesus Christ. Grace means umeritted favor something you didn't work for. EPHESIANS 2:8 For by (grace) you have been saved through faith and this is not from yourselves it is a gift of God. Romans 10:4 Christ is the end of the law for righteousness ( to everyone who believes). Galatians 3:19 Wherfore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions (till) the seed should come, that seed is Jesus.Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ (that we might be justified by faith ). The scripture is mighty clear!!! So does all this mean we dont obey the moral law of God of course not. Galatians 6:2 bear one another burdens and so fulfill (the law of Christ) wich is love. plz study the sermon on the mount in Matthew 5:17
Matthew 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. This is what the Pharisees and Scribes and the young rich ruler lacked. Love!!!. In closing when you read the book of Acts the only reason the Apostles went to the temple on the sabbath was to teach non believing Jews about Christ. But the saints met on the first day of the week. Acts 20:7 1 Corinthians 16:2 Revelation 1:10 The Lord day wich is the first day of the week the wicked catholic church didn't change the day they changed the name to Sun-day after the Sun- God but the first day of the week worship was in the scripture first. Why do we worship on the first day of the week. Genesis 1 God said let there be( light) so light is on the first day and rest is on the 7th day catch it. Jesus is the passover. When was the passover kept???? Leviticus 23:11 He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord for you to be accepted on the day (after the Sabbath) the priest shall wave it. Christ got out of the grave the day after the Sabbath we dont worship a day we worship Christ. Every day is a Holy day. Acts 2:46 (Every day) they continued to meet together in the temple courts. Romans 14 teaches about the weak and the strong. Plz read it . I'll give you vs one and two you read the rest. Roman's 14:1 Accept the one whose (faith is weak) without quarrelling over disputable matters 2 one person's whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. You read the rest. This in in response to SecuringFaith2"
Constantine was not a Bishop, he was the Roman Emperor, the first Roman Emperor to embrace Christianity, and put an end the persecution of Christians with the Edict of Milan in in 313 AD.
Long before Constantine, Long before the Council of Laodicea (which was a regional, local Council), both Scripture and the earliest records of Church history demonstrate that Christians observed the Lord's Day (the Day of the Lord's Resurrection).
Passages of Scripture such as Acts 20:7, we read the following: "On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them…"
Then in 1 Corinthians 16:2, Money was collected for the needs of the Church on Sunday. In Colossians 2:16-17, Paul also tells Christians are not to be judged for failing to observing the Jewish Sabbath; and Revelation 1:10 emphasizes the Lord's Day., During New Testament times, the Sabbath is no longer binding and Christians are to worship on the Lord’s day, Sunday, instead.
The earliest historical records of the church attest to this:
    Victorinus
"The sixth day [Friday] is called parasceve, that is to say, the preparation of the kingdom. . . . On this day also, on account of the passion of the Lord Jesus Christ, we make either a station to God or a fast. On the seventh day he rested from all his works, and blessed it, and sanctified it. On the former day we are accustomed to fast rigorously, that on the Lord’s day we may go forth to our bread with giving of thanks. And let the parasceve become a rigorous fast, lest we should appear to observe any Sabbath with the Jews . . . which Sabbath he [Christ] in his body abolished" (The Creation of the World [A.D. 300]).
    Eusebius of Caesarea
[T]he day of his [Christ’s] light . . . was the day of his resurrection from the dead, which they say, as being the one and only truly holy day and the Lord’s day, is better than any number of days as we ordinarily understand them, and better than the days set apart by the Mosaic law for feasts, new moons, and Sabbaths, which the apostle [Paul] teaches are the shadow of days and not days in reality" (Proof of the Gospel 4:16:186 [A.D. 319]).
    Athanasius
"The Sabbath was the end of the first creation, the Lord’s day was the beginning of the second, in which he renewed and restored the old in the same way as he prescribed that they should formerly observe the Sabbath as a memorial of the end of the first things, so we honor the Lord’s day as being the memorial of the new creation" (On Sabbath and Circumcision 3 [A.D. 345]).
    Cyril of Jerusalem
"Fall not away either into the sect of the Samaritans or into Judaism, for Jesus Christ has henceforth ransomed you. Stand aloof from all observance of Sabbaths and from calling any indifferent meats common or unclean" (Catechetical Lectures 4:37 [A.D. 350]).
    Council of Laodicea
"Christians should not Judaize and should not be idle on the Sabbath, but should work on that day; they should, however, particularly reverence the Lord’s day and, if possible, not work on it, because they were Christians" (Canon 29 [A.D. 360]).
    John Chrysostom
You have put on Christ, you have become a member of the Lord and been enrolled in the heavenly city, and you still grovel in the law [of Moses]? How is it possible for you to obtain the kingdom? Listen to Paul’s words, that the observance of the law overthrows the gospel, and learn, if you will, how this comes to pass, and tremble, and shun this pitfall. Why do you keep the Sabbath and fast with the Jews?" (Homilies on Galatians 2:17 [A.D. 395]).
    The Apostolic Constitutions
"And on the day of our Lord’s resurrection, which is the Lord’s day, meet more diligently, sending praise to God that made the universe by Jesus, and sent him to us, and condescended to let him suffer, and raised him from the dead. Otherwise what apology will he make to God who does not assemble on that day . . . in which is performed the reading of the prophets, the preaching of the gospel, the oblation of the sacrifice, the gift of the holy food" (Apostolic Constitutions 2:7:60 [A.D. 400]).
    Augustine
"Well, now, I should like to be told what there is in these ten commandments, except the observance of the Sabbath, which ought not to be kept by a Christian. . . . Which of these commandments would anyone say that the Christian ought not to keep? It is possible to contend that it is not the law which was written on those two tables that the apostle [Paul] describes as ‘the letter that kills’ [2 Cor. 3:6], but the law of circumcision and the other sacred rites which are now abolished" (The Spirit and the Letter 24 [A.D. 412]).
LONG BEFORE the Council of Laodicea, and LONG BEFORE Constantine.
This was always the practice among the early Christians.
But why listen to what the early Christians had to say, right? It makes much more sense to follow the ramblings of a man made religion that began in the 19th century, almost 2000 years after Christ, with absolutely no trace of apostolic succession or authority; and an interpretation of scripture which is diametrically opposed to what the apostles and their successors actually taught.

You wrote a small volume quoting several PEOPLE who are given undue importance by the catholic church, and you tell the traditions of SOME early christians (we know there were MANY DIFFERENT sects, including arians and gnostics). None of those who kept Sunday or wrote in support of it was either God or the Christ. You should go and read the words of your Lord (as he quotes the prophet Isaiah speaking the words of GOD) in Mt15:7-9. Also Mt 7:21 and Lk 6:46. Very brief! But perhaps we no longer understand the concepts of servitude and lordship.

    Sabbath or Sunday - Cont.
    John Chrysostom
"[W]hen he [God] said, ‘You shall not kill’ . . . he did not add, ‘because murder is a wicked thing.’ The reason was that conscience had taught this beforehand, and he speaks thus, as to those who know and understand the point. Wherefore when he speaks to us of another commandment, not known to us by the dictate of conscience, he not only prohibits, but adds the reason. When, for instance, he gave commandment concerning the Sabbath- ‘On the seventh day you shall do no work’-he subjoined also the reason for this cessation. What was this? ‘Because on the seventh day God rested from all his works which he had begun to make’ [Ex. 20:10-11]. . . . For what purpose then, I ask, did he add a reason respecting the Sabbath, but did no such thing in regard to murder? Because this commandment was not one of the leading ones. It was not one of those which were accurately defined of our conscience, but a kind of partial and temporary one, and for this reason it was abolished afterward. But those which are necessary and uphold our life are the following: ‘You shall not kill. . . . You shall not commit adultery. . . . You shall not steal.’ On this account he adds no reason in this case, nor enters into any instruction on the matter, but is content with the bare prohibition" (Homilies on the Statutes 12:9 [A.D. 387]).
"You have put on Christ, you have become a member of the Lord and been enrolled in the heavenly city, and you still grovel in the law [of Moses]? How is it possible for you to obtain the kingdom? Listen to Paul’s words, that the observance of the law overthrows the gospel, and learn, if you will, how this comes to pass, and tremble, and shun this pitfall. Why do you keep the Sabbath and fast with the Jews?" (Homilies on Galatians 2:17 [A.D. 395]).
"The rite of circumcision was venerable in the Jews’ account, forasmuch as the law itself gave way thereto, and the Sabbath was less esteemed than circumcision. For that circumcision might be performed, the Sabbath was broken; but that the Sabbath might be kept, circumcision was never broken; and mark, I pray, the dispensation of God. This is found to be even more solemn than the Sabbath, as not being omitted at certain times. When then it is done away, much more is the Sabbath" (Homilies on Philippians 10 [A.D. 402]).
    Pope Gregory I
"It has come to my ears that certain men of perverse spirit have sown among you some things that are wrong and opposed to the holy faith, so as to forbid any work being done on the Sabbath day. What else can I call these [men] but preachers of Antichrist, who when he comes will cause the Sabbath day as well as the Lord’s day to be kept free from all work. For because he [the Antichrist] pretends to die and rise again, he wishes the Lord’s day to be held in reverence; and because he compels the people to Judaize that he may bring back the outward rite of the law, and subject the perfidy of the Jews to himself, he wishes the Sabbath to be observed. For this which is said by the prophet, ‘You shall bring in no burden through your gates on the Sabbath day’ [Jer. 17:24] could be held to as long as it was lawful for the law to be observed according to the letter. But after that the grace of almighty God, our Lord Jesus Christ, has appeared, the commandments of the law which were spoken figuratively cannot be kept according to the letter. For if anyone says that this about the Sabbath is to be kept, he must needs say that carnal sacrifices are to be offered. He must say too that the commandment about the circumcision of the body is still to be retained. But let him hear the apostle Paul saying in opposition to him: ‘If you be circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing’ [Gal. 5:2]" (Letters 13:1 [A.D. 597]).

St Paul clearly explains why he went to the temple: "To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law."
Not to worship because the Sabbath was no longer binding on him. Thats why he says, "though I myself am not under the law but under Christ's law"

The Lords day is the day of rest, it was on a Saturday, not a Sunday. Jesus rose between the 9th hour on Saturday and sunset. His tomb was discovered empty the next morning, or Sunday morning. Not one single verse suggests Jesus rose the first day of the week. He was discovered to have already risen on the first day of the week.

Christ established a new sabbath with the apostles during the last supper which he completed just as he was dying on the cross by finishing the fourth cup of wine by drinking the sour wine held to his lips on the cross.
As Judaic followers the apostles would have been uneasy with Jesus ending the last supper without having the customary 4th cup that night. When they learned of his drinking the fruit of the vine on the cross … they realized that when Christ said “it is finished” before he died that it was the 4th cup and the new sabbath that Christ established with himself as the perfect sacrifice to God the father.
The apostles taking this act with them set Sunday as the lords day for which weekly mass was celebrated. There are first and second century writings on the Lord’s day being the day of worshipping Christ. The church chose not to include those writings as material for the New Testament because they didn’t see the need to canonize the operation of the church as the purpose of the New Testament was only to relay the truth of Jesus and his ministry … not to delve into the minutia of the church as other early Christian writings cover

Yes, the paragraph you shared explains quite succinctly why Sunday is observed--however, the Bible does not say that. Simply quoting John saying he was in the Spirit on the "Lord's Day" means nothing by way of identifying Sunday as the day just because some choose to call it such today. By that I mean, since the Scriptures say that Christ is "Lord of the Sabbath" (Matthew 12:8, Mark 2: 28, and Luke 6:5.), wouldn't it stand to reason that indeed the "Lord's Day" is the Sabbath? If He is the creator of this world He owns it, and if He owns it He has the authority to command whatever He wishes and we as tenants of HIS world are not free to challenge the owner's authority and go over it to impose on our fellow residents our will. If you refuse to obey our landlord you're free to leave the universe he created. Obey or go

“Q. What Bible authority is there for changing the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day of the week? Who gave the pope the authority to change a command of God?
    A. If the Bible is the only guide for the Christian, then the Seventh-day Adventist is right in observing Saturday with the Jew.”

IF CATHOLICISM EVER BEGINS TO PROMOTE THE READING OF THE ACTUAL BIBLE RATHER THAN ALL THEIR OWN DOCTRINE. . THEY WOULD NOTICE THAT JESUS IS THE LORD OF TGE SABBATH. NOT THE 1ST DAY.. THEREFORE JOHN IN REVELATION WAS IN THE SPIRIT ON THE SABBATH DAY.. THE LORDS DAY YOU PROMOTE IS THE ROMAN DAY OF THE SUN .. THE LORDS DAY OF MITHERA

Not only are Catholic doctrines BIBLICAL, but the Bible came from the Catholic church. Protestantism did not exist when the Bible was compiled and protestants aquaint themselves with ONLY the scriptures which suit their agenda.

      @keithelrod777 5 лет назад

This teacher got it all wrong. The "first day of the week" is the first day of the week of week 1 of the 7 Weeks of 7. This is from Leviticus 23, the Feast of Weeks. The Feast of Weeks begins at First Fruits/Resurrection Day as Day 1 of the 49. Look very close at 1 Corinthians 16 and Acts 20, just after we read the "first day of the week" we soon read Pentecost. Pentecost is Day 50, the day after Day 49 of Weeks. "Church" day was changed because of a horrible misinterpretation. Crazy!!! We need to all be Bereans.

There is a clear connection between the mark of the beast and sunday worship. From your response to this presentation its safe to say you don't read or study your Bible which would expose both. We are all heading for a day when worship will be an issue and receiving the mark of the beast will come with the plagues of God. This Jimmy fellow is preaching a sallow false doctrine as he does in all his videos. A simple study of Gods word will expose it.

@@keithelrod777 Im not sure what ''my doctrine'' has to do with John Darby? Further, I see no connection between him and the Catholic church. It is true Darby and the ''Plymouth Brethren'' had a real influence on Schofield, his Bible and the modern pre tribulation rapture theory but there only connection with me is in your confused mind. I can kinda make out some truth in what you wrote about Daniel. FYI, the world governments found in the statue of Daniel 2 are repeated in Daniel 7. The 10 horns there mirror the ten toes of chapter 2 with greater detail. A little horn is to come out of the ten horns that will last to the end of time. Identifying this little horn which is the beast with a mark of Revelation 13 and the harlot of Revelation 17 is important to all living. My point was knowing this would expose a lot of modern false doctrine and its roots. As far as the Sabbath day goes you state ''the problem with Sabbath believers is that the are observing the day and not the Lord of the day''. Wow, you must be a prophet or have a crystal ball under your bed. How do you know whats in another's heart? You don't! Thats a foolish and ignorant statement so I'll pretend you didn't make it. Finally it seems your into the old feast days and some eternal Sabbath rest thing which is a little to far out for me. If the book your promoting got you in the doctrinal mess your in, sorry, im not interested. Love Mike

“It is well to remind the Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, and all other Christians, that the Bible does not support them anywhere in their observance of Sunday. Sunday is an institution of the Roman Catholic Church, and those who observe the day observe a commandment of the Catholic Church.”

i am a former 7th day adventist and this guy is totally correct. the sda church is a cult started in the 1800s by break away baptists and methodists. the sda church has the same false prophet as the likes of jehovas witnesses and mormons and of the most heretical teachings is their view of Christ as being the arch angel micheal. I am now a Catholic and am now a part of the true religion of God where Jesus Christ is God. there is no command for christians to keep the jewish sabbath, only the israelite jews.

Hebrews 8: 7-9 may shock you! Verse 8 states, "I will make a new covenant with _______and __________! All the covenants were made with ___________! If one is not in covenant with Yah, regardless of what they call themselves or their group, they're lost!!

    • @muata
      @muata 8 лет назад +2

dinopad10 ...you quoted Hebrews 8:9, now understand three reasons why you stopped at verse 9.
The very next verse (10) is the end to your argument!
Reason #1 God is making the new covenant with the House Of Israel and the House of Judah as he did with all of his covenants!!
(Not the Gentiles, Not the Catholic Church)
Reason #2 What is the New Covenant?
Answer: verse 10, This is the covenant..."I will put my LAWS into their mind, write them upon their hearts
(Laws that Gentiles say were abolished).
God's people (Hebrew Israelites) teach the same words that proceed out of the mouth of the Messiah, "until Heaven and Earth pass not one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law...")Matthew 5:18
Has Heaven and Earth passed? Are they still here? Yes, so the Law has not pass, not one jot or one title!
Reason #3 ...I will be to them a God and they shall be to me a people (You stated earlier, "God rejected the Jews...the Jews are no longer God's people...the Gentiles of the Catholic Church are now the people of God)
However, it's there in verse 10, ...I will be to them a God! who are the "them" Yah is speaking about?
Answer: the House of Israel and the House of Judah!!)
Quoting Hebrews 8:9 and leaving out verse 10 speaks volumes about your heart's intent

    • @kenitonga8218
      @kenitonga8218 8 лет назад

I don't think he left out verse 10 on purpose because God is a God to all who believe in Jesus Christ and that are baptised into the holy trinity and when you read at the end of the chapter Hebrews 8:13 it says what they are talking about that the new covenant, he treats the first as obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. So the old covenant is obsolete and would vanish away so we don't follow the old covenant of the Sabbath, new moon, annual feast days, and unclean foods

The way I see it, Sunday is the last day of the week. Technically we say that Sunday is the first day of the week, but practically everyone thinks as Monday as the first day of the week, because that's the day we go back to work. So not only is Sinday the first day, but it's also the last day of the week. And is not Jesus the Alpha and Omega, th beginning and the end"?
Thanks for the video, it makes it pretty clear, but acording to some people there's going to be a lot of godly people in hell because they worshipped the Lord on Sunday instead of Saturday. Ignatius, Augustine, Luther, Armenius John and Charles Wesley, Whitfield, Finney, Spurgeon, Taylor, Judson, Graham, Wilkerson, mother Teresa, my dad etc.., I assume those who are tied to Saturday worship (which by the way the word "Saturday" comes from the name of the god Saturn) also believe we must worship in the temple, even though Jesus said the building was no longer necessary. But that He wants to be worshipped in spirit and truth, not the letter of the law.

Wrong. Exodus 31:16 clearly states that the Sabbath is the covenant of God with the Jews. Well, sir, that covenant is over! (Heb. 8:13). It was replaced by the New Covenant, which fulfilled it in Christ. The Sabbath pointed to the day of rest when the Messiah came.
Now if you want to continue denying that the Messiah has come by worshiping on Saturday, and if you want to be under Jewish Old Covenant law - have at it! Just don't call yourself a Christian because we believe Christ has come

What is the Sabbath all about? Lets recap your body is the temple of the HOLY SPIRIT He is giving you the opportunity to live and do everything 6 days of the week all He ask is the Sabbath day to give Him a day of rest Saturday the same day He asked for the earth to rest this is why you could not use your ox or donkey understand this in our terms tractor or car or radio or TV because He asked to be silent. Zec_2:13 Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation. Sunday is used for a day of work and Satan is working very hard to keep you praying for him.
