Let me guys help you out a bit with the meaning of the song. And anyone else who hears it for the first time here. You're right about the outcast part. However, it's a bit less peaceful. Human society tends to hate outcasts, exclude them and punish them. So he broadcasts in a way the feelings of anger and resentment that build up in people who are badly treated for no apparent (for them) reason by society as a whole.
It builds up and then fully lashes out as that "mommy rant" at the end. He is speaking to society. Rejects it and lets the hate to flow. "Down with the sickness" invites other outcasts to "get down with the message", and embrace "sickness" as society sees it. Stand up and for your right to be different from others. So yeah, the rant part fits the song very well, just for a slightly different reason. Hope that helps and have a great day :)

David Draiman....one of the best voices around! Can go from deep velvety baritone to tenor, from clear as a bell to rasp and back in a millisecond. Voice has a timber I've never heard before. Has awesome control and spot on pitch. None better!!

Disturbed was a band who I had never heard of in 01 and I was driving my Trans Am in Chicago when I was 16 and this was a cd left in my car by my best friend, who Id found out left it intentionally since I was so anti-music in this century. I put it in and flying under the street lights and looking up at the high rise abandoned buildings with trash barrels burning in the winter, it was absolutely amazing. It fit perfectly with where I was, which was a neighborhood you never want to be in, but got detoured. In a 79 trans am with T Tops out, I got very lucky. I look completely white, but my mother was black, and I thought for sure I was dead if I had to stop so I flew through every stop sign and found the interstate while this album is blaring the whole time. It’s unforgettable to me!

SOUND OF SILENCE!!!! Start with the official video that has over 650 million views. Then go for the live version on Conan (115 million views) This performance was the ONLY one the original writer/performer gave the thumbs up to. The original is considered a HUGE classic (1964?) TRUST ME!!!

Skip the official video and go right to the live version. It's 100x more impressive. He is so expressive and the arrangement is better. It's just flat out shocking live.

@@TheDarkBristol I enjoy the video and the imagery it gives to the song. They just need to overdub the Conan live performance to that video.

Have you guys seen the newer Dawn of the Dead?
Remember the scene when they are holding up signs back & forth with the guy across the street from the roof, labeling the zombies hilarious celebrity names that fit and the other gut took it out, like Rosie O'Donnel & Geraldo Rivera? Did you notice the elevator music in the background was an elevator version of THIS song? You HAVE to listen to this guy! He does the opposite of what we're used to, he takes hard songs & turns them into elevator music. Some say he gives it the Frank Sinatra version. His name ( I swear, look him up!) Is Richard Cheese! He says he turns the songs into crap! But you can't sat he doesn't have a sense of humor! Check out "Down With The Sickness" by Richard Cheese! It's funny as hell!

I got to see Disturbed just as they were getting big at a small auditorium in Tulsa Oklahoma and it was cool as hell because the band hung out with us and jammed for like three hours. David Draiman is badass and this song is dark and if you don’t listen to the unedited version it won’t make sense. The list of songs you should go into with this group is long.

"Down With The Sickness" is about someone who goes through horrific child abuse and ends up embracing the beast that they've become. That's what the song is about.

      No, it's a metaphor.
"David Draiman has stated that the song "Speaks about the eternal struggle of the individual against the mother culture of society that is constantly trying to beat the child struggling for independence and individuality into submission."
