I do not care if that engine is 100 years old, it is one of the best engines ever designed and still better than almost any other inline 4 made.

The K5 GSXR1000 has one of the best engines ever made. So it’s for an amazing foundation to start. New doesn’t always mean better.

Michael Neeves is the most trusted bike tester/reviewer in cycling. Tells it straight up. The bike styling looks like a sport version of the FJR Gen II to me. That is why I like it.
I'm not in the market for a new bike atm but I am a Suzuki fan and so pleased this bike is getting great reviews.
Even though I have not tried it, this bike seems to me that it is going to be a real blast. Beautifully designed, quality built, technology, incredible performance and value for money.

I thought I was looking at a Tracer 9 or a Ninja for my next bike but this Suzuki has really put the cat amongst the pigeons! I really like it a lot, (but not the blue wheels!)

You are in my opinion the best reviewer on RUclips, honest to the point with no fluff, brilliant! I'm looking at moving from the adventure world (for touring) to this. Wish it had a centerstand for chain maintenance but that probably won't stop me, cheers!

I used to have major issues with my K5 1000. The tires kept wearing out all the time. I sold her recently. Just ordered the new gsxs 1000 gt.

Let's go! More sporty sport-touring motorcycles with hard OEM luggage! The Ninja 1000SX has been pretty much perfection for how I use it, but it has not had any recent competition from other manufacturers. I am glad to see Suzuki introduce this bike and keep things moving!
Neevesy you hit the spot yet again. I’ve been riding over 50 years which makes me an old fella I know. Sports Tourers are my first choice and my 6 year old R1200RS is holding up well including Cadwell and Croft this year. You talk so much sense. Upper body positioning on the road, relaxed riding technique allowing the bike to do what it does best without interference etc. I like the Suzuki and mark it down as a possible replacement for the RS (waiting to see the review of the NT1100). But another part of me would like to put 100,000 on the Beemer. Nice one!
Owned the F, loved it for the engine and handling, turn in was quick but not flighty. Will be interesting to see how the GT handles. Looks are miles better than the F. Currently have an ADV bike and would love to try this one. Really odd that Suzuki have not put on the remote preload adjuster as it should be mandatory on a tourer. I've ridden the 2021 Z1000SX (Ninja) and it's now a truly great bike, but the Suzuki has it for the engine, and I found the ride better too. The seat on the Kawasaki is a bit of a plank (maybe better now ?). Look forward to reading/seeing the back-to-back review of the Z vs GSX. Great video as always.

If I was younger I would've looked very hard at this bike. Instead, I picked up a new V-Strom 1050XT Adventure. Very happy.

I did 70,000 pleasant miles on a 2003 V-Strom. It wasn't as reliable as the FJR1300 that followed. One particularly bizarre fail: the magnets in the rotor migrated to one side so the charging waned. I finally offed it when the fuel pump started whining and I discovered that a new one was $750. For comparison, a VDO replacement for my E36 M3 at the same time was $150.

I have the 2021 GSXS 1000 and that K5 is magnificent.
If Suzuki had made this bike 10 yrs ago, it would still be here today 2024 & well loved, this bike will be around for a long time👊🏼🙂
Great review but you forgot to mention one of the best features for a bike of this type, 19litre fuel tank, it’s got to be Suzuki’s best selling bike next year 👍👍👍👍

I bought a ‘15 Ninja 1000 and thought it was an amazing bike. Then Suzuki came out the the GSXS-F 1000 in 2016. I test rode one and really liked it. Last year (2021) I upgraded to a new ‘21 Ninja 1000SX. There was no Suzukis’ to be found. I was amazed how Kawasaki refined this already amazing bike so much. I absolutely love it. The winner is John Q Public if he picks either of these machines for sport or sport touring usage. I am still partial to the Ninja but that’s just me.

Can they PLEASE cut it out with the whole one-headlight-per-high/low-beam thing? It's just dumb and looks like it's broken.
Would be better for us to have 2 lights for high, 2 for low. More brightness on the road at night. Bikes really need to see the road when it's dark and wet.
But then again I've no experience of these lights. Are they any good at night time when the roads are wet?
The bike looks great, and everything he's saying really appeal to me.

As far as I know it's meant for the stupid car drivers that might think it's a car that is far away rather than a bike that is close.
Such a small thing but it's a deal breaker for me because of it. A horrible look for a great looking bike.

I am a massive fan of the Z1000sx, my 2012 SX had 120k on it before I sold it and it still pulled like a freight train two up with luggage. It is still the one I recommend to my mates and one recently bought a 2022 SX which with its electronics takes it up a notch. Silky smooth, amazing QS up and down. I also own a 2009 GSXR1000 for all its rawness. I will be interested to see how this compares. The lack of rear shock adjustment is a disappointment to me. the rear seat looks a bit high and narrow compared to the SX for the pillion.

This bike when it came out had me awestruck, I testdrove both but the Suzuki just gripped me by the heart and is simply refusing to let me go. I got on it not knowing what to expect and I got off it with a grin so wide I would swear I'd never be able to get my helmet off again. I cant wait.
Beautifully styled and a solid sport touring platform. That said, where is the friggin's center stand?!!

I quite enjoyed this. After riding my KTM 790 Adventure around for the past 20 months or so, I've gotten myself in a pickle about 6 too many times. It's a great bike but I'm not such a great rider on steep grades with, rocks, deep ruts covered in thick dust and sand. I'm 67 and picking that thing up is about all the fun I can stand. This looks more like what I would enjoy more these days.
I’ve got a paddock stand in the garage so a centre stand isn’t a issue and just adds more weight.
Love the screen. Like the looks. Plenty of power. Price is good considering bike prices have gone stratospheric in recent years. If your in the market for this type of bike it’s got to be in the running at least worth a test ride.😎

The V-Strom 1050XT, a pseudo off-road capable adventure bike, has cornering ABS & traction control, but the S1000GT, a pure road bike, doesn't?? Well, that's absolutely inexcusable and a total deal killer in my opinion. Suzuki should add that and a center stand to complete what is an otherwise excellent bike. And while they're at it they should put the S1000GT's TFT on the V-Strom in place of its Casio digital watch screen.
Learn how to ride. Everybody wants a safety net to cover inefficiencies.
@R TimetoRide you mean like fuel injection instead of carbs? Radials instead of bias ply? Discs instead of drums? Halogen/LED instead of sealed beam? Liquid instead of air cooled? Foot shifter instead of hand? 4 cycle instead of 2? I can do this all day.

If you download the brochure and read it you'll see your assumption of no TC & ABS is flawed :)

Great bike, but, after doing a 16,000 mile tour of the north west US on two 2016 VFR800s there are a few things I would want on this bike.
1. A centre stand makes chain maintenance much easier on the road and was a life saver when a four inch nail destroyed (nice hole in the sidewall) my rear tyre 50 miles from nowhere. 2. Every touring or two-up bike should have a remote preload adjustment? 3. A larger fuel tank, the VFR has a 21 litre tank and is good for +250 miles touring, the extra range is a handy buffer when you’re in unfamiliar remote territory.
I wouldn’t miss a top box, we managed fine with the much smaller VFR’s panniers and small tank bags and know many laundromats!
Cruise control and the integrated satnav would be awesome. 300 mile days on end, after a few days, having cruise control to shake out the right wrist would have been awesome. Satnav less so, having a live map in front of you would be nice but suggested routes aren’t for motorcycle touring. We used the Butler maps in the US, these maps have colour coded roads, rated by local motorcyclists.
Apart from those things, I’m really keen on this bike and I hope the other manufacturers follow.
So there you go, book the trip, buy a bike and go before you’re too old or tied down by a ball and chain. Alternatively do what I did and marry a girl who likes to ride motorcycles, she’s a keeper!
PS, Neevsey your recommendation on the Metzler roadtec 01s was really helpful, we got +10k miles on a back tyre!

Great bike, prefer the looks of this over the Kawasaki and a much nicer colour, but no mention that you can't fit a top box. Could be a deal breaker.

Love it. And terrific review, Neevsey. I ride a 1290 Super Duke GT which I rank as the best sport tourer ever, emphasis on sport. But alas, KTM is for inexplicable reasons no longer making the GT available in the U.S. If and when it's time for a new bike, the Suzuki is high on the list.
Cruise control, sweet panniers, quick shifter, sub-500 lbs wet, heated grips, check. I'm glad Suzuki saved weight by skipping the center stand... I've always been able to use a prop stand for chain lubing. My question surrounds possibilities for a top box. It appears (from looking at web photos) that there's just enough room on the rear end for the aftermarket e.g. SW Motech to deliver a rear rack.
Rear rack and top box is a must for pillion riding. I'm not putting my gal on the back of any bike for 2 weeks without the safety and comfort of a top box for back support, not to mention toting additional pillion gear, clothing etc. Solo riding, I leave the top box home.
It would be a tragic oversight if Suzuki designed a "touring" bike without the capacity for two-up touring. Not much is required.... just a few inches on the rear taillight section for rack & box. Those few inches alone add negligible weight. Well, we'll see what the aftermarket comes up with for a rear rack. All I need is a rack, and I'd custom-bolt on a smallish scooter box for the top box as I've done on my KTM and my former 2003 FZ1 (each of which have ample space for a rear rack).

My touring runs tend to big (for me) trips of about two thousand miles to get where I'm going. I also do smaller trips closer to home going around 300 miles one way. In either case I'm often stuck on interstates - what I think are called A roads in the UK. It's a lot of time on relatively straight roads.
Mr. Neeves, THAT'S when I want to take or make a call. Those calls have helped me through more than one long ride, particularly useful when the circadian rhythms start to kick in.
If you've never tried it, I suggest having a really good conversation while on a nice, leisurely ride.
"Interstates" in the UK are "motorways, M". "A" roads are nextr followed by "B" roads or "un-classified"

I'm using Suzuki GSX1250FA (2015) with present 72000km and still running superb conditions. Thinking of 2nd bike 🤔 and hoping Suzuki GSX1000GT to include Heater Grip, Center Stand & Adjustable Wind Screen (refer to Yamaha Tracer 9 GT was all-in) in order to get the highest sell & best Tourer bike of all. ✌
I have the 2015 1250FA (special edition, pearl white) - and trading in for a GT - adly no centre stand though :(.
you say in the review that the brake lever lacks feel.... well you forget to mention, in the comparison to the sx (imu, remote preload, adj. screen...), that suzuki mounted a "cheap" axial pump lever instead of a radial one (that instead is installed on the sx), so this could account for it (not abs...). just my 2c...

I'd definitely want the taller touring screen, heated grips, centre stand if one can be fitted( if it couldn't I'd look at the Kawasaki). Instead of the panniers I'd prefer a top box like the Givi 56 litre I have on my current bike. The blue paint job is brilliant, something I'd never get sick of.

Last year I was looking to replace my 2007 VFR800. Kawasaki z1000sx was only option but not sporty enough for me. Got Tuono V4 instead (great bike, but not perfect for touring, durable though). Today, I would probably go for Suzuki GT. Well done Suzuki for resurrecting Sport-tourer market. Tall adventure bikes are not for me, and not for many others.

Suzuki didn’t resurrect the sport-touring market. The Ninja 1000 was out 4 years before this bike was born.
The Touno and Ducati Supersport are fantastic bikes but I agree, they're not really sports tourers, not even with a lower case T!!

Great review! I just happened to stumble on to this video because I took notice of this bike and saw it at the dealer today and was curious about reviews on it. You mentioned that the tires and breaks are some areas that can be improved and you suggested a different tire. What can you do about the breaks? Also, you pointed out in this review that classic sport tourers are not around any more as it seems Adventure bikes have taken their place. I agree with that and I miss the sport touring segment of the market. I use to have a Ducati ST 4 as one example of a sport touring bike and that kind of bike does not exist any longer. This bike kind of reminds me of that. What other bikes that are considered sport tourers do you recommend besides what you suggested here. It seems like this would be the top of your list right? All the bike you need in the real world (save centre stand and shaft drive), and hope the finish holds up.
Needs IMU. Tracer 900 is more hi-tech and lighter too. But the sound of K5 is just delicious...
When I first saw the previews of this bike, I thought it might make be dissatisfied with my Versys 1000 SE GT. The Kawasaki is a great bike, but it is a big, tall machine with a high centre of gravity and wideish bars. So something a bit lower, lighter and easier to manage looked attractive.
But no center stand on the Suzuki does seem crazy. And I see that a top box isn't on offer, presumably for safety/weight distribution reasons, just like the Tracer 900. Add in the tiny-looking screen and what looks like a knees-up riding position and I'm suddenly not so sure.
But thank you for your review and I will of course reserve judgement until I ride one.
I love my gen 1 gsxs1000, would swap for this if that pillion seat was fit for a pillion. So I guess we keep the tiger and stay a 2 bike family.

Weight (498 lbs / 226 kg). Good review as always from Neevesy. Always looking for a potential upgrade from my wonderful VFR800 and this is more interesting to me than the Ninja. The way I ride and the bikes I've had makes me think I'll never need a multi-axis IMU on a touring bike so the Suzuki is preferable to the Ninja at least on paper.
I think the Bmw's s1000xr/r1250 rs are worth the extra money over those 2 all day long, especially if you take resale value into account.

Great review. Still, I can't fathom why the absence of an integrated center stand on any bike with touring ambitions is not considered a major blunder due to unavoidable chain lube requirements on the go. Granted the Ninja has the same issue, but that still does not make it acceptable. I also applaud the resurrection of one of my all-time favorite segments - I own a 2014 VFR. But I'd gladly trade in ability to pair my phone for a proper stand.

The center stand is a definite blunder. Use mine regularly while touring on my GSX1100F which is sort of this GSXS1000GT's grandpa.

@@reflectionpoint I don't think it is a blunder so much as it is the law of two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. I think, like a larger tank, would be one of the things I've heard complaints about that will require a new frame design.
Just lean it over on its side stand and front wheel.

This is the bike Yamaha should have made to compliment the MT10 & R1. Put some Yamaha stickers on it and nobody would know. 🤣
Having my 2007 Suzuki Bandit have all sorts of electrical issues (stopping on the free way as engine is reving up to 5-6k while tac reads 0rpm, Fuel Injection light stuck on, next time it's the temperature light after the engines dies, next death is oil light) This is basically the next Bandit, (if the GSX1000F was not). Very interested, but having a hard time finding one in AZ. Thinking a Cali trip is in order, but work at a dealership and see the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX every day for work. I'm fine without the heated grips but the side bags and windscreen availability are the two things that come to my mind. I'm torn up about my Bandit since it's only got 31k miles
I think the Ninja 1000SX still has it, Kawasaki have been refining it for years now and I think the details show,
6 axis IMU, adjustable windscreen, adjustable shock preload, I just wind about six turns on it to compensate for the pannier weight, takes about a minute!
The suspension is fantastically plush, but still handles very well and the engine is the most flexible grunty thing I’ve experienced.
Great first attempt by Suzuki, but missing a few of the details above and I just can’t stand this one headlamp only look, give it two or three years to iron the bugs out and the Suzuki may have the beating of the Ninja, thank God another “ normal “ sports tourer is on the scene, I can’t stand this Adventure bike fad 🤷🏻♂️, I just don’t get it?
Personally I want Ducati to use the V4 Multistrada engine and make a beautiful sleek sexy Italian sport tourer,…take my money!
Whoever came up with the one headlight out concept needs a kick in the nuts.

Yeah but you still need a sat nav mount. Its not all integrated in the console like the GT which works from your phone. I had looked at Ninja 1000 but i'm going with the GT .
@@chriskarn4718 Sat nav mount is included in the tourer pack on the Ninja, I’d rather custom plan my routes on mapsource and download onto my Garmin, it’s just what I’m used to 👍

The K5 is legendary, and the package has value. Agreed. But how wide is the gap between the bike and the demographic Suzuki is targeting? I’m in the market but, my problem is, I struggle to find the T part of the G.

Top of my list should I decide to part w/my Z900RS/UJM/ST.
That's the clincher for me, it just needs the missus to be able to get on it, the dealership to give a good price for the gsx1250fast in px, and a test ride and I'm for one!

The K5/6 GSXR1000 was, scratch that IS such a good bike, if Suzuki built it today it would still sell like hotcakes.
Given they aren't really building much new stuff, why not build some "new old stuff"?
