One other non destructive and very flexible way to do this is by using an Adjustment Layer to add the Gradient Map. This way the map is on its own layer and can be adjusted at any time during the process. Also, it works as a mask so adding color to objects is made much simpler. Look for Adjustment Layers down at the bottom right close to the "delete layer" button and select Gradient Map. The Linear Dodge effect you demonstrated is beautiful. Thank you very much for the helpful tips. *Subscribed*
Thanks for the great tip! The reason I -very- rarely use Adjustment layers is because I don't like to have "bridges" when I paint. Meaning I like to go at it naturally and what things I apply on the painting, will then have been applied. However, when it's a big painting, I often use Adjustment layers in the very end of the piece to get it exactly how I want to with curves, sharpening, color grading, and any other effects. Thanks again for your tip. :) Best, W.
Thank you. I learned this a few months ago and it is extremely powerful. Gradient maps can also help you understand value and is a quick way to 'try' different color comps. Bravo. 👍
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you, I always have trouble coloring, I never known I can use this function. This is really helpful, could definitely boost my working efficiency. Thanks again!!
For people who have clipstudio paint go to edit -> Tonal correction -> Colour balance and Gradient tool are similar to this photoshop tutorial. I have the Pro version so not sure if it will work for the basic one.
Thank you very much! Your tutorials are interesting, simple and helpful. I was inspired :) I'm experienced in digital painting and I've already known about gradient map (I use the adjustment layer). But your video gave me some new tips - I've learned about linear dodge for example. And thank you for the brashes pack, I'm interested to try it :D

Yeah I rarely go from grayscale to color, but rather get to color really quickly in my speedpaintings so I get a more natural look. But this is a quick way to get some color going to continue working!
Thanks for the video helps alot ! And it would be awesome if you could do like a "tree painting tutorial" you know, grass, leaves, everything that's related to plants, as you did well for the rock painting tutorial!
Very Useful tutorial. Thank you. Do you have any tutorial about perspective and concept art? I really need to learn how to apply a grid to hep me when I paint..
You can check out my latest video on "Finding The Perspective In Paintings & Photos". You can try to play around with some perspective grids that you get out of that. :) Good luck! W.
Hey, this was massively helpful, thank you for this! But also I was just wondering how you brought up the hue/saturation tool? At the moment I can only bringing it up by putting on an adjustment layer, and I wasn't sure if there was something else I could do to adjust it on a specific layer.
Can you specify where in the video you mean? But if it's only to bring up the hue/saturation tool whenever, you can press ctrl/cmd + U and that should do it. :) Good luck!
Yes I use a tablet. For 6 years I had the Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch, but now have upgraded to the Wacom Intuos Pro medium because I had outgrown the smaller one. I have an article on picking your first tablet on my site www.evenant.com :) check design and then basics!

Yeah I rarely go from grayscale to color, but rather get to color really quickly in my speedpaintings so I get a more natural look. But this is a quick way to get some color going to continue working!
I need to watch it twice.

Ah Yes that's the one, thank you so much!
Nice video. I am new at photoshop, so I have a question. Why can't I use the gradian map?
Doesn't matter, just found out I was because I was working in 32bit and not 16bit :D
Yes a lot of the functionality disappears when you work in 32bit. Never work in that! Only 8 or 16.
Okay thanks ;D
Do you use a mouse or a tablet to draw, and if you use a tablet, which one?
Yes I use a tablet. For 6 years I had the Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch, but now have upgraded to the Wacom Intuos Pro medium because I had outgrown the smaller one. I have an article on picking your first tablet on my site www.evenant.com :) check design and then basics!
What is the width and height your using for this image?
I believe it was something like 1500x2000. But it doesn't really matter all that much! :)
Ok thanks! ive been practicing a lot of my concept art on landscape style backdrops so I want to try this more portrait view.
