This makes so much sense that it's maddening - it's not all new, but knowing that a piece should basically be at a finished level on grayscale before I move onto colour always makes me upset with my own impatience. I'll be trying to reel myself in a bit more when doing illustrations from now on though... also, great points on the highlights and shadows needing to be less saturated, it's been bugging me when I lay out colours and it just looks off. Thank you for making such straightforward and educational videos!

My brain is currently strruggling with grasping the dynamics of cooling down colors. I somehow get confused between cooling down colors by tonal shifting and desaturating.

when I try to use The color blend mode colors look way off like too bright and unnatural even the darkest tones any advice?

That is very common when yoy first start using the color mode. The colors are off because basically the values (black and white tones) are off. For example, to use yellow, you must have a really bright value (not white but it qhould be light enough) because if you look at the color wheel, yellow only looks good with light values and looks ugly with other darker values. Vice versa goes for red and deep blue. You should use reference, turn it into black and white, compre the colors with the values. Experimenting should also help . Wish I helped and good luck !

I believe in my work to start with a color sketch the mute it all to Check you values later. I think overlay color makes the color seems too fake or pretentious to real value. Grey scale painting is good for practice to see value better, but as a source for painting I found myself painting real color over the color overlay. Cause when it comes down to it. It just doesn't have the true value as blending and mixing your color value.
