    I'm not diagnosed but I most definitely have this. My arms are covered in scabs and scars and every time my mom sees it she never fails to tell me how bad it looks and it really doesn't help the situation. Plus she doesn't understand that I can't just stop picking. It's not that easy

      Same I always pick at rough places, I have all the symptoms, and my dad also picks his face without noticing

      God!! I thought I was the only one! I cannot wear short sleeves anymore because my arms and legs are covered in scars and it's a huge insecurity :(

      I'm a 18 years old male. I started picking r my arms randomly 2 years ago cause whenever I run my hand through my arm I would feel the bumps and it triggers me to pick it. It got worse and worse overtime where I now I have big scabs on my arm. I moved from picking my arm to my back and I started getting acne on my face so I started to pick my face as well.By this time I new I have a huge problem seeing all the scabs on my back and arms.I told my parents but they were just disgusted at me and never actually helped me see a doctor. My arms are mostly healed but there are obvious marks/scabs that is slightly faded away. I started to pick my scalp and it has been the worst out of all. I cant help my self stop it. I need to see a doctor soon before it gets any worse.

    Not diagnosed, but ive cried over the fact i pick my skin so much and how many scars i have from it. I cant help it it annoys me sm and yet i still do it 😭 i get so angry and upset.

    Man, I’m literally crying right now… I thought it was something crazy people do (or so that’s what my mom told me), and I never realized how common it is. For the past 3 years I’ve been plucking my eyelashes and eyebrows as it’s a weird urge just to do it. Thank you so much for making this channel! I feel so much more secure and supported as I’m trying to quit this habit! 😭❤

      There isn't one way to stop, but management is definitely the way to go! Certain therapists specialize in BFRBs (body-focused repetitive behaviors) and combine aspects of talk therapy, habit reversal training, cognitive behavioral therapy, awareness bracelets, and support groups. The best way, in my experience, is to redirect the urge and ride it out with something that might not be as satisfying as skin picking, but good enough to get through it. Sending love!

      A thing that helps me to an extent is holding something like a fidget such as a Rubix cube

    It all goes with my endocrine diseases, which caused my mental illness, especially the thyroid, one of the things they check for mental health

    I have a bunch of scabs and scars on my legs from it. It really affects my self asteem.

      thank you for sharing. 100% know that feeling. Remember that htis is a subconscious condition, your primal brain at work...it's not something you have control over because it's automatic.     the urge is so heavy. the need to pick my fingers is so overpowering. a lot of the time i don't even know i'm doing it. if stopping was so easy, i would have stopped 8 years ago.
    i think i'm just going to have to wear gloves till the urge dies down. (luckily for me it's winter so i can get away with that now).

      It's so hard because our body regulates the nervous system through picking. Not the most helpful way to regulate it, though. Instead of "stopping" it's more helpful to "manage," and learn other self-soothing skills that we can use to curb the urges. Check our page for more resources!

      dermatillomania is skin picking. it can be anywhere on your body. roughly, the main things that main the skin picking classified as dermatillomania condition is the repeated picking, the repeated attempts to stop, inability to stop despite attempts and an impact on your mental health, emotional health and social health. hope this helps.     i honestly cannot stop picking my lip skin and i do it so much that I'm used to the bleeding and i get told "You can stop", i can't stop its grown as a bad habit for me, do you know how to help??

    I do it since I can remember... When I was little.. 4 years old..I picked the skin from my thumbs and upper lip...then I've gotten chickenpox and after recovering I started picking the scabs from my ears and scalp...then I stopped...when I was 10 I changed schools and I remembered that I did that to my scalp and I love it...and since then I've never stopped.. and I'm 31.
    Right now I'm only picking the skin from my thumbs and lips. And picking the scabs from my scalp... It's reliving for me...I explain to people it's like when a smoker Is anxious and take a smoke...instant relief. .
    Oh and I always wondered...if I shave all my hair...what wouldall my scars look like

    For me sometimes it's even non-voluntary it mainly has to due with my lip there Is litterally bright red spots on my lips from picking it so much it bead the other day my step mom was like "dint draw on yourself" because there was blonde on my fave from picking my lip

      Hi! Our RUclips channel has quite a few webinars on body-focused repetitive behavior management. They're free to watch, check them out if you'd like. Remember that your skin picking serves a purpose: self-soothing, and your nervous system is using it to reach a state of homeostasis (you probably feel satisfaction/relief after picking). The best way to manage is to learn your triggers, prepare for them, while simultaneously learning and practicing other self-soothing skills. To do this, you need awareness of when and why your nervous system is urging you to pick. We have a smartwatch that helps with that called Keen2. Check it out on our site - www.habitaware.com. We also have other resources - blogs, an online group, an eCourse, etc. Management takes work, but progress is progress! Stay committed and take care of yourself! And feel free to ask questions!

    My parents keep getting mad that I pick at scabs and pimples but I just do it when I'm stressed or something (they kinda think I "can't" be stressed and only they can)

    I've been picking my belly button skin until bleed since I was a child and just a few days ago I discovered this was a disorder. I'm trying to not do it but it became automatic.

    I’ve always picked at my upper lip (mostly, but sometimes my lower) since I was like 6, I used to do as a stress reliever….but now it’s becoming a full blown habit! And now my lips are scared

    Wow okay this made me cry a lot which never happens from videos. Thank you for posting this because I currently have huge sharpie writing on my legs written from my body's perspective to me that says "please stop your hurting me" so I think I needed to see this because I blame myself and bully myself for doing it even though at the same time I'm begging myself to stop. I have this really bad and will get stuck in an attack for hours, picked my back gums so much I exposed the root of my tooth, and I have caused serious infections before. I truly cannot remember a time in my life where I didn't struggle with this and other forms of self harm besides during my 8 year amnesia block but I probably did it then too. I have beaten the other forms of SH but the skin picking I can't seem to stop. I even do it while I'm asleep occasionally but after writing all this down I think I need to talk to a therapist about it. I wish all the luck and healing to the fellow people that struggle with this compulsion. ❤❤

I don't want to assume your experience, because everyone has their own relationship with these behaviors, but medically dermatillomania isn't considered self-harm but actually a self-soothing behavior.       @@Habitaware I can totally see how it would be a self soothing attempt instead of self harm because I have noticed most of the time I'm picking it's underlying cause due to stress or re-experiencing past traumas, ect. Trying to take notice of the trigger or underlying cause has been a major major help.
