Rossington Collins Band is one of my all time favorites!!
When I saw Skynyrds Tribute Tour in 1988, The Rossington Collins Band opened for them Yep.. Gary, Dale Billy & Leon came out after that set and played with Skynyrd. Allen Collins at this point was in a wheel chair and was unable to perform. After the encore with Freebird they brought Allen out & he thanked the crowd for coming out. Will never forget this show. I was lucky to have had front row seats.. just wished we had cell phones back then for pictures.
You have the memories that will always be with you!
One of the best shows I've seen. Shoreline amphitheater in Mtn View CA. Lacy Van Zant introduced them and Santana came out and played 'call me the breeze' with them😎👍
I saw some video of when they did that. I think it might of been their 'Behind The Music" episode. Yeah, it was sad to see Allen in such a way, if you were there from the beginning like many of us, you remember his upbeat presence and seeing him like that.. Well RIP Allen.
I like both albums a lot, that debut smokes! I also love The Rossington Band album Love Your Man! Dale is killer on it!
I have been fortunate over the years to have met Gary,Dale, Artimus Pyle and even Bob Burns. All super nice peeps!
Remember hearing it as a kid ..so good then did not know the history of how they formed ..such a great 1st album
after the first two i have a hard time deciding...
LMAO Yeah, I was gonna say...
Blind Faith ranking coming soon

1st Album-I Love-Don't Misunderstand Me" and 3 ti-yi-yi-yi-mes as bad! Uh-wo-uh-wo-oh-woo-oh!
Should talk about that Allen Collins album and the Rossington albums too, they deserve a listen.
Wolfgangsvault has RCB live in Nashville Jun 30 1980. This is the best sounding live with them. Yes Dale is the secret is the secret weapon
Good stuff Pete & Grant! I love me some southern rock but I don't believe I've listened to either of these albums, I'll check them out!
Not a fan of southern rock but on the strength of Don't Misunderstand Me and Getaway, I bought Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. For me, Dale Krantz' vocals were the deciding factor.
I liked that Dale Kranz was more subdued on the second album. Too many Joplin wannabees were out at the time and still are. And she reeled it in enough on the second album to give a nice balance of belting and just singing.
Saw them with Point Blank on October 28th, 1980 at the Sunrise Musical Theater in Florida. An instrumental Free Bird was the encore. That was very emotional for most in the audience, including me.
I have that BGO release, and I love it. Of course the debut is a southern masterpiece, but the second album ain’t bad. Nice show!
Also-"Unknown Soldier" The Allen Collins Band!
You could have added the following two albums:
Love your man
Returned to the scene of the crime
Love both albums Both 5/5 listens, but I'd give This Is The Way the edge because it features my two favourite tracks from the band, Teshauna & Pine Box (which sounds nothing like the Eagles to me).
I only have "Best Of: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection".
That's a good one to have, I own it myself (along with the albums proper and some live stuff). It has a few rarities thrown in if memory serves. Those 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collections have great sound. I have the Poco one they did too.
@@GalaxyRover1020 I got Poco "Gold" (2 CD set)!!!
@@matthewclark9652 I just Googled the tracklist. Nice overview from all eras. Now I have "Widowmaker" in my head after seeing it listed.
Dont Misunderstand Me is an incredible song with the dual vocals. These poor guys were still wounded from the plane crash physically, mentally and emotionally. They were lost without their leader Ronnie. The old footage and interviews during the time of the 1st and second RCB albums and tours, they are in rough shape. Serious alcoholism and soulless dead eyes. They looked like hell, bags under the eyes, and you could smell the booze emanating from their from their bodies. You can see they are living on booze, no sleep and no food. As I said at the beginning, they still looked like the walking wooded 3+ years after the crash.
I saw some live footage of Allen's band and it looked like a funeral onstage as they did like 3 LS songs including Free bird. I can't blame em. Talk about a bunch in the gut! With the release of Street Survivor they were on the cusp of going from middle, almost upper tier rock stars, to MEGA rock stars. Then to have it all gone with the death of their leader/voice of the band and the mega talented Steve Gaines. Street Survivor was going to launch them into the next level and no doubt their follow up would have put them on top and going muliti platinum. I have zero doubt about it.
I only recently discovered this band when I heard "Opportunity" playing at the gym. Definitely has all the Skynyrd vibes you could want.
The second album suggests to me that the 'something' is record company pushing 'you gotta do this, you gotta do that' after expecting Skynyrd level success. Maybe from the band too...
Allen Collin’s wife died early in their tour, this caused the tour to be cancelled, I had tickets. This caused his diminished role in their second album and completely devastated him. This led to their breakup.
Allen's wife died in September 1980 and effectively took him and this band with her.
I don't remember if Pete did it already, but a ranking of post-Skynyrd member albums would be cool. Alias, Artimus Pyle Band, R/C Band, Rossington Band, Allan Collins Band and whoever else.
Gary was the reason I bought my first Les Paul 😀
Ranking 2 albums. Great.
IDK Pete. I need more time going through their discography. RCB was putting out new material by the bucket loads that the band just morphed back into Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Have a major problem Pete. You usually don't but in this case if you add in 20th Century Best of Rossington-Collins Band. That means we will rank 3 albums.
What's next Pete?? Ranking the albums of Derek and The Domino's??
Informational question. Have yall done a ranking of the Johnny Van Zant band's albums?
Yes!
"Fancy Ideas" is the best song from 'This is the Way,' but the album overall is not bad! I think if they had more time to flesh out the songs, the album would've turned out more organized and put together. But most importantly, I think if Allen Collins' wife hadn't passed away and the circumstances were better for him, the Rossington Collins Band would've had a better chance of surviving.
Are you also going to add Rossington Band "Love Your Man" their 3rd album from 1988 also??
Nice video.😃👍
I bought both of these and can agree that the pixie dust was missing and too many bland tracks. I wanted more of a barnstormer, taking the Skynyrd legacy forward.
Speaking of 38 Special, if you wanted a perfect example of how they mixed the southern rock with some elements of more popular wider listening, if you can get a hold of it, the video on VHS tape of a live performance called Wild Eyed and Live. They had the hooks that satisfies everybody. If only they were to release it on DVD or streaming.
And talking of reviews, has SOT ever done reviews of concert video releases?
Allen’s wife died suddenly of a hemorrhage during a miscarriage. During the 1980 tour. I’m guessing Allen was nonexistent in 81. Then Dale chose Gary. Barry was probably the only one whose heart was still in it. So he’s the bright spot on this is the way.
I have the same set
I really enjoyed this, thanks! Side note......38 Special had lots of outside help with reards to songwriting. Some of their biggest hits were not even penned by them.
@@robertbyrnes3592 Jim Peterik wrote their biggest hits, but they had some really solid songs that they wrote. Friggin' "Chain Lightning" rules.
For me the second release "This Is the Way" is the stronger of the two. *but* the second album doesn't have a tune as strong as the hit "Don't Misunderstand Me" from the debut album.
What about Alias ? 1979 just a thought.
How about Birmingham, Alabama rock group Hotel (NOT The Motels with Martha Davis) who made 2 albums, Hotel (1979) & "Half Moon Silver" (1980) both on MCA Records & also available on Apple iTunes!!!!! I just made those 2 albums on 1 CD!!
Lets not forget Atlanta Rhythm Section as a Southern Rock staple band. They had a great early 80s album called Quinella that holds up today. True, they fell victim to the late 80s overproduction trend.
Barry Bailey was an amazing guitar player.
Pete have you ever ranked Marshall tucker band?
Yes.
@5min, @Grant, if Allen was the problem the band wouldn't have gone with him after the R/C split. Guessing Gary & Dale might have been the problem.
Should have also included discussion about the Allen Collins Band album & the Rossington Band albums.
makes sense since the band stuck with Allen. Yes, you could look at all the albums at the same time. Good idea!
I must admit that I didn't know this band, even though I had heard Don't Misundstand Me several times. I tried listening at the gym with headphones on, and it's good. But it's not connecting with me on any visceral level whatsoever.
Is that Matt Pinfield's cousin?
