We are experiencing a large number of grasshoppers here on my property in Utah. I did some research and wanted to share the way I have chosen to deal with them!
We moved into a new house 3 years ago and everything I've planted always gets destroyed each summer. The neem oil and insecticidal soap doesn't seem to bother them. I spent every single morning last summer spraying them with the soap. And this summer it seems they are just as bad lol. I just got the ECO bran stuff tonight and hoping to cut them back a bit. Hoping it works for me too. Sad that the Nolo bait is gone because it seems that was the best. I think the EPA shut down it's use for now.
I've used NOLO and Semispore. Same product, different manufacturers. I find that even though I haven't used them in 2 years, I am still having less grasshoppers than other people seem to be complaining about. Up until about a week ago I had only seen 5 grasshoppers all year. The NOLO/Semispore seems to stay in the soil reducing the grasshopper and Mormon Cricket overall load.
I wish it was still available. I used it about 4 years ago, but this year I have a ton of grasshoppers. It has been a couple of weeks since I put down the Ecobran, and there is noticeably fewer grasshoppers. Once Nolobait or Semispore is availble, I am going to be switching back!
They are horrible. I have bees and chickens. So I’ve been reluctant to use anything. I’ve ne covering some of my beds. The ones with carrots, lettuce and onions that they really like and that don’t need the pollinators and early morning and in the evening, I put gloves and squish them or shake them and the chickens eat them. The follow me every where. Very satisfying 😊.
I wish I had chickens! They are really bad this year! The Ecobran did reduce the numbers, but didn't eliminate them. I applied it a little too late in the grasshoppers life cycle. That has to be so much fun watching your chickens eat them!
So, I just killed 8 grasshoppers in my garden by hand. They are everywhere. Unfortunately, most of them (around 60%, roughly) are flying adults. What is the best course of action to control the ADULT grasshopper population since EcoBran is best used for those in the 1st to 3rd instar stage?
Yes, it's worked wonderfully! I have applied it 3 times this year and have not seen grasshopper damage. I have seen a few grasshoppers, but they are not around in the numbers that they usually are.
That's a good question! I am assuming it is less likely to harm praying mantis because they would have to either eat the bait to have it harm them or have ut directly applied to them. They don't eat plant material, so their exposure would be limited.
This video was made last year, and I applied the product when the grasshoppers were too mature. It seemed to help a little, but this year is different! I have applied it 2 times so far and am seeing a drastic reduction in grasshoppers and their damage. I still have a few around, but not enough to worry about. I put down the first application the first time I saw a tiny baby grasshopper about a month ago. Last week, I started seeing a few more that were a bit larger, so I did a second application. So far I am counting it as a win!
Rockin' the T-shirt of the Stanley Cup champs!

There isn't a lot you can do once they are adults. I am also catching and squishing them. There are so many this year!
Any update on this?

Does ecobran kill praying mantis?

How do you feel that it worked for you?
