  • Martin Brundle and the Jaguar XJR go back a long way.
For the first time in 29 years, Martin Brundle is reunited with one of his Jaguar XJR-12s for a nostalgic blast at Silverstone, together with his son Alex, also a sports car driver and broadcaster.
Read the full nine-page feature in the current July issue of Motor Sport magazine, including an interview with the car’s designer, Tony Southgate and a profile of the genius behind the team, Tom Walkinshaw.

The car number 3 was winning the race by a lot and Walkinshaw replaced one of the official drivers (Eliseo Salazar) by Martin Brundle 3 hours before the end of the race under the excuse to assure the triumph because it seems Walkinshaw did not trust in Salazar (who was send to car number 4 almost retired with a lot of problems). Had he not broken both his ankles badly in an accident at the Dallas GP in 1984, he may very well have been a consistent winner. They nearly amputated his left foot, such was the severity of that accident.

@@paulbraham6884 yeah, just like Schumacher's broken leg in '99 destroyed his career and Lauda's little off in '76 meant he hardly ever won again, lol!

p jay I never implied Brundle was on the same level as Schumi or Lauda, just that his particular injuries are pretty detrimental to being fast in a racing car. Those two champs were clearly in the highest level of driver, but guys like Brundle were still quick and capable.
It’s a well known fact that Brundle could no longer left foot brake after that accident. Similarly Johnny Herbert had a horrific accident in f3000 where he broke both ankles so badly, one foot was practically hanging off by a thread and he was never the same despite a handful of wins in F1.
Point being, both could’ve been faster if not for having their feet smashed to bits.

@@paulbraham6884 I know you didn't say he was on the same level as Schumacher or Lauda, the trouble is I reckon he thinks he was!

Martin called in sick for the last F1 broadcast, Alex replaces him, and no-one noticed.
What a sweet car, love it. Awesome vid, love it.
Loved Martin's little dig, "Give it plenty of clutch, you know, it's the one on the left."

Always had sooo much respect, for Martin; amongst the best ever, drivers. Could have gone much further, if he had resources like some of the other greats (my opinion). He was one if the only to really give Ayrton Senna, a run for his money!

Damn beautiful car that was during its day. I miss the big Jag's roaring around the track chased by Porche 962's

First: great idea to get the Brundles behind the wheel again!
Second: the audio editing is absolutely terrible
Third: 5:01 see his left hand? That's the modern age driver getting ready to downshift... on the wheel... in a manual-shifting car xD Too funny if you think about it.

Nice looking car. By Martin's admission, he felt more at home in cars like this one compared to F1 cars.

240mph? I seen a clip of this car going 248mph, maybe even 250mph on the straight in 88 or 99
