Excellent documentary. I too have lived a minimalist life for a long time. You are so right when you say “our memories are within us, not in the things we own”. I also “love people, not things”
As a huge fan of the original minimalism documentary, I sure hope this one brings something new and insightful that wasn’t already covered in the first one.
I wondered this myself. Loved the first one and follow Matt D'Avella avidly but I fear this may just be a higher quality rehash of the first doc. Hope I'm wrong.
Finally! A Netflix documentary on the minimalists. Every one needs to see this right now especially because of MATT D'AVELA. We believe no one can do this documentary better than him. Such a fan!!!
First, I was excited to see this movie. Cause these guys brought me to minimalism and a ecofriendly lifestyle. But the movie itself felt like an endless ad filled with soulless „stuff“ which was mentioned before in TED Talks and previous documentaries.
So true, I finished watching right now, I was getting tired of listening the same over and over also on the same tone, also if I'm not wrong, on the first movie Nicodemus said he quited from his job after being promoted and now he said he was fired without previous notice, I don't get it. 🤔

Just watched. Not so good as expected. Same stories are being rewound (minimalism game, their sad personal histories, 6 figure jobs and other things reviewed) not too much additional stuff. Some additional interviews were ok, but that could be made into 10minute youtube :)
I have finished it without feeling tired which didn't happen to me in the first one. To me, this one was on point. For people who are new to minimalism less than an hour is a good amount of time to understand and connect. But well we are used to quick information I guess.
I think it's a great documentary if you are new to their story. But I have listened to all their podcast (including their podcasts on Patreon) and have read most of their books, so this is more of a quick review of their story. Don't think I picked up much additional insight from this. I'm sure it will really resonate with new viewers though.
I loved their first documentary but this felt like a retelling of the same thing I’ve listened over and over: how they were earning a lot of money but not being happy, how sad was their childhood, how one found out how to be happy and how you can play the 30 days game of minimalism. Matt did a really good job directing this one but the script wasn’t as good as I thought it will be like ...
@Steve Borden this is spot on. Matt, for example, at least keeps adding value with new exciting videos and trying different things but the Mininmalists have been selling the same story for 10 years and as you said, going full circle

Yeah, until you get Alzheimer's or dementia. Memories are the most transient thing we have, which is why people started creating cave paintings about 40,000 years ago, and collecting physical possessions the moment they stopped wandering about 13,000 years ago. The anthropologist/archaeologists call it "Material Entanglement". Without it we would have no agriculture, no writing, no art, and no technology. Are we collecting the right things today? I'll be watching this. Most of Americans are in one way hoarders, we always want to have lots of things that we do not even need. Once I stayed my xmas vacation cleaning and getting rid of stuff, it was hard. But since then, I really think twice before buying something and ask myself this, do I really need it? Most of the time now is NO.
I started getting rid of stuff years ago & this past summer I rented a commercial dumpster, while preparing to move in a much-smaller home, and just started chucking stuff in. Not only did I completely filled it to the line limit but still had 17 lawn bags of trash on top of it. Less stuff means more ☮ in your life, less to clean, and less to store away. After the move, I realized I still have more stuff to chuck away ☺
I love Matts work and this documentary is really high quality which is such a credit to him, however I really do not find Josh & Ryan relatable at all. I felt like they were very rigid, rehashed their same story again and their uber intentional wording in this felt less fluid and more patronising than anything. It would have been more fun to watch someone going through the motions of trying out minimalism instead of listening to Josh and Ryan again. I tried to skip through their parts but they made up most of the documentary.
Totally agree with you. I love Matts work but the content was really disappointing. It was soulless and we have heard the minimalists selling their thing so many time, with the same phrases over and over again, and somethings was exactly Word by Word as in the first documentary. Would have been more interesting with other people in this on. There are lots of other minimalist people that could have something New and interesting to add
I came here from netflix just to see if there were more people annoyed by them. After 15 minutes I couldn't stand it anymore, I haven't watched/listened to the minimalists before and it was really unbearable. Love the subject, hate the psychopath Ted talk vibes.
Every time when I feel down I watch Matt's first The Minimalist docementary, and it feels every time when I watch it. Im looking forward for this one so much!!
Watched both films. I think the idea of practicing minimalism, can be applied to many aspects of our daily life. Before I watched this or discovered The minimalists, I was already trying to figure out how to minimize things, perhaps starting with my music studio setup.
It's the previous documentary re-hashed with different graphics but even less content. But I do have to congratulate the director for managing to include every current production video cliche into just 40 minutes.
This is literally the same thing as their first film the minimalists ... lots of rambling and repeating .. i thought they would actually go more in dept with the HOW and WHY ... instead we get same old sad backstory that we don’t all relate ...
Totally agree. I was disappointed bc it was a lot of the same from the first documentary. I had expected other people than the minimalsits bc they where a lot in the first and there are a lot of others minimalist.
I have come so far in just under two months since subscribing to their Patreon channel. I'm from a very long line of hoarders and clutter connoisseurs. It is very liberating to finally be able to let go.
This was way better than the 1st doco The Minimalists did, imo. This one has been a life changer for me. I don't travel, and I'm happy to stay home for a vacation. Living the Less Is Now, minimalist lifestyle, makes my home the place that's most relaxing for my family.
This is so confusing - it's like a reshoot of their first documentary - same stories. The doc is 70% about those two guys and 30% about minimalism with 30 seconds of 'how to' in the final couple minutes of the movie. I wish the documentary had spent more time on all the new experts they had commenting and much less time repeating the life stories of the two main men and the one guy speaking in slam poetry-style prose. This had a lot of potential but completely missed the mark, in my opinion. I still can't get over the fact they basically reshot the first documentary which didn't get great reviews. So odd, what a waste of money.
Happy New Year to everyone! Just have watched it on Netflix, I was checking if movie came out already since I woke up on 1st January. I heard your story of coming to minimalism so many times but still I was happy to hear and see it. I wish my mother would understand this movement, hope it will come in Russian language as well. So, may be she could joing the movenement. Problem of the generation of ages of 50-60 is that they came from Soviet Union, passed the consequenses of 2nd War, USSR colaps, bankruptcy of currency, deficiency. And it's really hard to convince them that they don't need these stuff. There is no starvation, markets are everywhere, you don't need to wait for a rainy day. You are in a new age of over consumerism.
Making me tear up watching this. I've been wanting to start over so bad recently and this is just so motivational and heart warming to know I'm not alone and it can be done. I cannot wait for this to come out!!! So much more in depth and what I think we all need right about now. Keep doing you!!!
This one wasn’t good. It felt more like an infomercial. You really don’t connect to the why and the reasons for minimalism. The first documentary was way better.
Wasn't good in your opinion. But tbh this one was sharper, well executed and simple. It's up to you if you connect or not. I watched both and the first one was really good indeed, but way too long in my opinion if you are new to minimalism.
I feel the same . I didn’t connect with them . I was so excited to watched but it was like to much to hear them . I bit of dramatic. I enjoy more you tube minimalist .🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
@@asuka3407 Matt D'Avalla said that this would expand upon the first and was like 4 years in the making. So for you to say this is for people who didn't watch the first would be a joke. They had a real opportunity to go into the psychology of minimalism, how you can apply it to your life, etc. For anyone familiar with these guys it was the same shit we've heard 50 times before. There was no value added to my life by watching this.
Guys - This a masterpiece. The storytelling is impeccable, the music/audio track (that most viewers won't directly notice, but they WILL FEEL it) is fabulous, and the editing builds emotion while pushing the message brilliantly. And it's just plain fun to watch. I'm confident that this doc will be phenomenally helpful to SO many people!
Love the concept, completely agree with it. Wish they could just speak sincerely about it though. I find the pleading and theatrical way they speak pretentious.
I switched over to this sort of thinking years ago and it saved me from being in debt. Purchase only things that you need (not want) and will use (constantly), everything else is a waste in every sense of the word.

Watched both films. I think the idea of practicing minimalism, can be applied to many aspects of our daily life. Before I watched this or discovered The minimalists, I was already trying to figure out how to minimize things, perhaps starting with my music studio setup.
Okay got it.... Let's get over consumerism together
Saw the first documentary in high-school and didn't realize Matt directed this! Excited for the new one!
I've been listening to their podcast for over 2 years, saw the documentary at least twice, and this still gave me chills!!
Can't wait ♥
Same!
Lots of love for Matt
Matt, you are the best 👌🏾
Thanks Amir :)
We all here to support thought process of matt d' avella.. and his creative work.
Ronald Banks, I see you!
That is exactly what we want. Only, this time we know they have fine-tuned their message even better so that it reaches even more people.
This feels just like watching Matt's RUclips channel just with lots of different people! Way to go Matt!
The director just sold everything in his house yesterday
Method Directing.
Hi Matt
@@mattdavella Damn, dedication 😂
Well after all, he and his wife are moving to a whole other continent.
They rented a storage locker.
Just watching the trailer gave me chills cannot wait for the whole thing, eep
Love all of you guys matt your film making skills are beautiful ❣️
All the positive comments are from Matt's friends because doc was not good.
Congrats, guys! So excited to see this coming to Netflix. I really appreciate your work.
Came here from Matt’s channel! But I first started listening to the Minimalist podcast waaaaay back!
they should make tv series on hoarding to minimalism in their homes. Something like "Clean Sweep". It was a great show
This was way better than the 1st doco The Minimalists did, imo.
Finally! A reason to get excited for 2021! I’ve been waiting and hoping that The Minimalists and Matt would make another documentary! 💪🏼
Can’t wait!!! 🙌🏻
Never had a netflix account & don't know how to watch netflix. Will create one to watch this 😍😍😍.. great work Matt & Joshua ..
It was the same story
@@terrellsmith6715 yeah pretty much, maybe they could have involved other people. But I think it's for the people who didn't watch the first one.
I am so stoked. I have seen the first documentary at least 4 times, and I know this one is going to be amazing. Can’t wait!
Minimalism is the new cool.
Guys -
This a masterpiece.
