  • We recently sailed on the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise. Prior to sailing, we heard a lot of negative comments. We'll take you on a tour of the ship and give you our honest review of our experience on the ship. Was it smooth sailing or rough waters?

Right on. You get what you pay for and nobody begged them to book the cruise. lol I usually cruise Carnival, Royal Carribean and Celebrity. I enjoyed Margarittaville at Sea and got the Heros Sail Free Program so it was a free cruise for me and I paid the fees and any additional things that I opted to buy. I am used to paying way more to cruise than I did on this cruise yet it was a good experience and I enjoyed it a lot. I would book it again if I am down in that area.

One thing they mentioned was totally correct, my cabin was very cold and I like a cold room. The only negative I had was getting off the ship, not much control on deck 5 as the line went back and back and back. It took 45 minutes just to get off the ship then to customs. The meals in the steak house were wonderful, the meal in the main dining room were equally wonderful. The crew were always friendly. Yes, the ship is old but for a short cruise it was well worth the time. A must see is the late comedy show, adults only. Our cruise was 19 to 21 April as I just wanted a quick get away .

We went on this after I watched this video the first time. We had a great time overall, however the administrative blunders made a bad last impression when we were trying to leave. In a nutshell, their system suddenly forgot everyone’s payment on file so anyone who charged anything to their room were stopped at the exit and told to go to another line to settle their account. A lot of pissed off people that morning! Anyways, we saved a ton of money over the official excursions by just paying a guy there to take us around to places, including apparently the exact same beach park that excursion people were at. Was a more authentic and personal experience and we got back before departure. Sure the boat was older but I still enjoyed being on it, such as it is. The food was adequate, you are correct the breakfast was meh compared to the rest of the day. the drinks were fantastic, I had way too many of those lol. The pizza and the gelato on deck 9 are worth it if you pay extra for any food. Another passenger asked if this was our first cruise and we said yes, and she said “well it only goes uphill from here!”. I think that sums it up. 😂

Oh wow! We hate to hear about the troubles you had! We can understand how that would leave a bad taste in your mouth! We heard they were supposed to be doing a multi-million dollar upgrade last month. Did you notice that? We’re on Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas right now, and even though it only slightly bigger and a couple of years newer, it is definitely much nicer, so definitely uphill. Of course the price is way more per night vs Margaritaville at Sea, so even with the bad, Margaritaville is still a pretty decent value for the price.

I plan on taking my husband on this cruise at the end of the year to celebrate his retirement from the United States Air Force after 20 years. We thought it was such a cool gesture that this Cruise line offered the heroes program and thought this would be great. I have been researching video after video about this particular Cruise line and just like you saw nothing but mostly subpar and negative things. But it was very refreshing to hear your review. Your review was very sweet, honest and fair. And it is greatly appreciated. Thank you for renewing our encouragement to go. We have thought about giving them a shot, however the reviews have steered us clear for now but sounds like you guys had a positive experience. I have heard the food was good. As far as the price goes, I found the price for the “non military” cruiser when sailing with a vet (for example my wife and I) was more for her than the price per person would be without adding the military deal. We are about 45 minutes from port of Palm Beach so may try them out at some point. Will be interested to see the reviews after the upgrades to see if they hit the mark. Thanks.

    • @garyandjenn

We’ve noticed their pricing does fluctuate quite a bit, after seeing some other people (who didn’t book under the “Heroes Sail Free” offer) talk about their rates, which were better than we had, so we went and checked, and sure enough they were lower. (It seems to be a common thing with the cruise industry). If your schedule is flexible, we’d suggest just looking through the calendar and find the cheapest cruise, since y’all are so close. Overall it wasn’t bad. The main dining room food was very good. The buffet was meh. We’ve heard good reviews of JLB Prime, but we can get a steak anywhere near home, so that wasn’t something special for us. If y’all do decided to try it, let us know how it was!

We went for a quick getaway, to relax, spend time together, and not worry about work and life, and so we had a good time. If you go in with lower expectations, and don't expect the biggest and the best, then you will probably have a good time.

The amount of time allowed off the ship was somewhere around 8 hours. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot to do in Freeport, so you probably won't need all of that time. As far as dressy clothes, the majority of people were wearing shorts and t-shirts the entire time, but we did see others who wore nice dresses and suits during the evening, so it is really up to you. One of the nicest things we enjoyed was dressing up for formal nights. My husband and I had sailed with this cruise line 20+ times and on that ship when it was the Grand Classica. I don't think too much has changed since then other than the cabin decorations. We loved the fact that we were only an hour from the port and didn't have to take too much time off work to go. Loved that it was reasonable too. The crew are all absolutely wonderful and we've made many friends among them. The food and entertainment have always been excellent. Hi guys! Thanks so much for your review. My husband is interested in going and asked me to research it before we book. We would be taking advantage of the Heroes Free option. I did have a quick question for myself. I'm a little prone to seasickness... any thoughts on that? Was the ship "rocking" much? I've only cruised 3 times; twice on Disney and once on Carnival. I was seasick two out of three times; so I'm a little anxious about it. Just wanted to hear your opinion. Thanks again for your great video!

For the first day it was very smooth. We didn't notice any rocking. On the second day, after we left Freeport to head back, the motion started becoming considerably more noticeable. The motion doesn't bother me, but it does Jenn. However, even though it was noticeable it never got so bad that she got sick or even had to take any medication for it. If you have gotten sick on the larger ships, I would definitely suggest getting your doctor to prescribe you the motion sickness patch or get some of the over the counter motion sickness medication, just to be on the same side.

The cruise we are most looking forward to is on Virgin Voyages. We had thought about doing another video on Freeport, but we didn’t have a lot of content filmed there, so we decided not to. Honestly, Freeport is not one of our favorite ports. There is really nothing to see or do in the cruise port, and it is a long way from the Port Lucaya Marketplace, so you have to take a cab there. There really isn’t anything within walking distance from the port. Also, there really is very little to do when you do go somewhere. Port Lucaya Marketplace was a ghost town when we were there, and a large majority of the shops weren’t even occupied. Also the area was hurting with the closure of the Grand Lucayan Resort. It was a beautiful resort, but was in major disrepair.
We do want to say though that the people there are super friendly, and we still encourage people to go and help support them, because they are still struggling to recover from the cruise shutdown with Covid.

We hate that you didn't have a good experience! Unfortunately we weren't paid for this. We spent our own money and were just sharing our honest opinion of our experience. If it had been bad, we would have definitely said so. However, like we said in our video, there were things we found wrong/didn't like during the cruise, but this cruise is what you make of it. We saw a lot of bad reviews before we went and did quite a bit of research about the ship, so we went with low expectations. We made the cruise about spending time with each other and just getting away and not having to worry about work/home life. Knowing this was a 32 year old ship, we didn't expect it to be it in best condition, so we didn't really look out for imperfections. If you are used to traveling on bigger cruise lines like Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, then you will most likely be disappointed on this ship if you expect the same quality, as someone who regularly cruises on Seabourn would probably be with Carnival. We're cruising on one of Royal Caribbean's smallest and oldest ship (Grandeur of the Sea) in June, and we will expect more of it than on Margaritaville at Sea, especially since our cost per day is almost twice as much, but still being an older and smaller ship, we know it won't be the same as sailing on one of the newer ships like Wonder of the Sea.
