  • Before Saul Bass, title credits were merely a listing of names
that appeared before a film began. Bass believed that the first
frame of the picture should be the first frame of the story. So,
he designed thematic opening title sequences for "Around the
World in 80 Days," "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," "West Side
Story," "Psycho," "Vertigo," "Spartacus," and more recently "Age
of Innocence," and "Cape Fear." He went on to design the
corporate logos for such companies as Quaker Oats, United
Airlines, Rockwell, AT&T and Continental Airlines. Meet this man
who is concisely eloquent with both word and image. Bass died on April 25, 1996.
