Why we moved to Alaska (SE 2 EP 9) 2017

  • This week we were still stuck in town due to weather. So we decided to share some of the reasons why we moved to Alaska.
    In Alaska you can homestead and live off grid without to interference with the government. You can carry guns without a permit and the hunting is plentiful. If fishing is more you style there is plenty of that with salmon and halibut.
    In the near future we will talk about how we moved to Alaska and things you need to know before moving to Alaska. Hopefully you enjoyed the video

    I envy your lifestyle. I've always wanted to live in Alaska. Im tired of the heat. Lived in California, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Kansas, and Georgia. After going to Northern Afganistan I learned something, I love the cold weather and mountains. Wish I could get my wife on board. Thanks for sharing

    Just subbed. You are truly blessed to be in Alaska. I spent 4 of my Coast Guard years at Air Station Kodiak. Was fortunate enough to be able to fly into several AK locations, including Juneau. I'm moving off-grid this month but in a little different style. I converted an ex-USPS step van into my full-time retirement home. Always camping for free on public land traveling with the seasons. 10,000+ ft. elevation in the Rockie Mountains in the heat of the summer, Southern Arizona along the Colorado River in the winter. Every place in between in the spring and fall. No property tax, no state income tax, my version of freedom.

    I came across this video because my wife and I are taking a trip up to anchorage in a few days. This will be our first time in Alaska. Even though we've never been there, I've been trying to convince my wife that we should move there. We'll see how the trip goes...... funny thing is that we currently live in Phoenix area, and we've also lived in Oklahoma. If we were to live off grid, I would love to go back to southeastern Idaho. At least we'll have family somewhat nearby. Alaska living sounds adventurous and cool. I'm not a hunter but would sure love to learn.

    I've checked an in the fall of 2018 the average prices in alaska are about what I'm paying in southern idaho. I have more agriculture within 300 miles of me than in all of alaska. I'm still $2.20 for 18 eggs. $2 for store brand bread. $3.40 for the cheap brand of milk and up to $6 for the raw non pasteurized milk. And $200,000 to $300,000 for a 3 to 5 bed 1 to 2 bath house on a few acres. The land developers have driven property prices way up. And there is only 1 grocery store within 40 miles. They charge what they want.

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  7 лет назад +1

      Hey JediNinja. We actually moved to Alaska from Colorado. Don't get me wrong I love Colorado but it is becoming more like California as far politics are concerned. We left after they banned 30 round mags and if you wanted to loan a friend a rifle to go hunting you had to fill out a background check. There were a lot of other reasons for us to leave Colorado but Alaska also has its own problems.
      You're picked out two great states and whichever one you choose you'll be happy with. Side note, my brother lives in Texas and you can drive there in a day from Colorado.

      My Alaska Dream that's what we are going to see. We are going to drive any recommendations? I have a 2012 4x4 Silverado with 160k miles. Should I worry about winterizing it or should it be fine? Hell I just won't turn it off if it gets too cold

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  7 лет назад

      Jimmy Garcia I would differently get it winterized. A block heater, oil pan heater and a battery blanket is pretty common in the interior. I would also keep a survival kit in your SUV too. Just in case you break down and have to wait any period of time for help.
      One more side note, maybe bring some vitamin D. You're only going to get 3-4 hours of sunlight a day.
      Even though it gets cold you'll have a blast.
