Garbage video? This is the most beautifully tragic and raw video I've ever watched, not to mention the fact that it is so skillfully directed and edited. It shows this small community of people, all having these inappropriate sexual fantasies about that girl, thinking they own her. When she creates her own sacrilegious relationship in reality, they feel betrayed and they burn her alive, next to her lover's dead body, blinded by their lust, their jealousy and their weaknesses. True masterpiece.

Honestly I always thought she was screwing all of them and none of them knew she was with all of them.
I thought she was cheating on the groom with all of them and all of them thought the bride cheated only with them. Then they find out she was screwing everyone so they go "sacrilege!" and burn her alive for that sin. They were okay with it as long as they believed they were the only one. I like my interpretation better tbh.

It's amazing how everyone judge her for what she did, but not themselves. They knew they were sinning, but simply ignored, because they liked how she made them feel. This, I think, is the subtle question that this video presents.
I think they blamed her for their sins, and through killing her, they felt they were burning those sins along with her. Corrupt and creepy.

This video is insanely good. And here I thought music videos were a thing of the past. It's non-linear, it's subjective, it's provocative, it's sexy, it doesn't glorify the band. What else could you want? It takes good music and great cinematography and combines the two into a fantastic, powerful experience. Fuck me.

This music video is genius. We see the girl and the guy being captured, but we don't know why. As the video progresses we see that the girl is an adulterer and they are being punished for their sins, yet they are all sinners.

@@thehummingbird8790 I agree that the video is open to interpretation. I also agree with both of yours. I think the video is an interesting, twisted plot about sin, sex and hypocrisy. I noticed, the preacher is the guy who the townsfolk masked, chased and shot. The girl escaped out of the back of the house to no avail because she ends up tied to a stake and being burnt with her dead lover/preacher. So the mob mentality was that her act of sex with the preacher was "sacrilegious" maybe? Even though they all engaged in the same behavior? I'd love to hear Karen O's take on it. So far I haven't found anything online with her talking about her ideas for this video. Either way, I love it!
Truly one of the best music videos I've ever seen, and one of the most well paired with its song. More emotional punch in four minutes than many movies have in two hours.

It's 2019 and I am still coming back to this.... Just the song is so minimalistic and yet powerful plus the video. Lily Cole is doing such a great job playing this fragile yet dangerous creature. And every townsfolk gives me the creeps and at the same time, I kinda get their emotions. And the camera is making these moment so intimate

the blonde was cheating on her husband with the pastor but the whole town wanted her for themselves. Angry at her for choosing the pastor over themselves and covering up their own impure desires for a married woman, they kill her and the pastor.
The images of them sleeping around with her were their desires, but not what actually happened as shown with her constantly changing personality whenever she's with each one of them,

I think the most accurate meaning of it is whatever it represents to each individual, since we all are bound to twist it's image to our own beliefs/principles
Great symbolism. as well as backwards timeline. We all dance with sin, tango with the devil so to speak. And yet we are so quick to condemn once somebody else is caught under the starlight. We watch as people no worse than us are condemned for their actions in cowardly hypocrisy. And our false purity only leaves us feeling worse than the devils we burned.

Well, I'm surprised this hasn't got as much attention as songs such as 'Heads will Roll' or 'Maps' it is technically just more pleasing to the ears, refreshing vocals and uses a combo of instruments, can't be praised enough.

Theory: None of the sex scenes shown in this video actually happened. The scenes were just the secret sexual fantasies these various townsfolk had about her in their own minds. Yet despite her having nothing to do with it and probably having no idea these people even wanted her, they privately hated and blamed HER for their own lust for her. Either because they knew she would never be with them, as represented by the disinterest or outright contempt on her face during the sex scenes. Or because the very attraction they felt for her was a source of shame to them, as in the woman being ashamed of her secret lesbianism/bisexuality.
What *actually* happened was, she married her husband in the church, and some time later she was caught cheating on him with the guy in the mask. The towns elders, enraged at her "sacrilege", decided to burn her at the stake as punishment. In so doing, they subconsciously hoped to purge themselves of their own lusts, and/or get revenge on her for being unobtainable by them.
The video represents the dangers of mob justice or cancel culture. How the people pointing fingers and demonizing someone else are usually far more corrupt than their scapegoat.

This video is still so amazing. It's like they are all so HYPED at the "end" literally because she died for their sins- they all felt guilty for having sex with a married woman and felt like murdering her for having sex with the preist vindicated them... but also they are mad because she had sex with another besides them but also they're upset a person they loved died. The priest is possibly the most pure of any of them, he is young and who knows if he was a virgin or not- just speculation on my part but you get the idea. Originally I thought he was tranquilized but no, that's a shot gun and he's dead being burned at the stake with her. Don't cheat, but also don't slut shame. I like how this video shows the different facets of this girls personality came out with her different partners.
