This was an interesting film, and quite topical. I know that recently it was announced that Japan now has a population of elderly people which has hit 25%, which is quite a tipping point in terms of who will look after them in a working population which is shrinking... The article I read mentioned that immigration will be desperately needed to cover this shortfall, but that Japan is quite strict in allowing people to immigrate into the country. It's an issue that most, if not all, developed nations are facing, made all the more difficult due to the prevalence of anti-immigration attitudes. It seemed to me, that by helping the old woman go to the river, rather than the mountain, the main character is angrily reacting to the all too common attitude our culture has (specifically Western culture, I can't speak for others) of putting elderly people into care homes instead of keeping them close to the family, to look after children (for example). I'm not sure if I missed something, but I was wondering about the relevance of the river - is there a counterpoint to the mountain story in Japanese history that involves a river, or is the symbolism of the river something more general? Great work! My respects to all involved ❤️
No questions here, I just wanted to tell you that I enjoyed your short. Very moving, and I thought the lead actress, the artist, was great! I could feel her emotions....very well done! :)

Reminiscent of Logan's Run without the Utopian veneer. Like a marriage of elements from Logan's Run and Soylent Green. I know it's a short, but this could make a great dystopian series.
Thank you! Yes we are developing this into something longer. Funny thing is this played last year at Sci-Fi London Film Festival where they also played Soylent Green - and it was (shamefully) my 1st time watching it!
It's not too far off from being the not-so-great dystopian present. How modern society treats the elderly is shameful, nursing homes might as well be The Mountain with how much concern we give to the people sent to them.
Totally moving storytelling, of a future that feels almost all too real, brought to life with some incredible visuals and performances from the cast and crew. Thank you to Susumu Kimura, Daga Malinska, Mia Ando and everyone. Honored to have been a part of this film.

Kudos to Mia Ando for expressing the emotions so elegantly and naturally. Fine story to inspire us we don't have to follow the new norm even if it aligns with history.
Our society is too quick to give up on the elderly. They provide a strong connection to our history, a wealth of knowledge of how many things work, and a chance to honor those that came before us.
Thank you for your comment Greg. I feel the same way. I do hope that whenever the talk of disregarding certain group of people comes up, enough people would raise their voices and say no.
A few days ago while shopping in a local store, I had a young employee confide to me that the boomer generation and gen x got paid to just sit around and do nothing. Now, I'm in the gap between the end of the boomers and the beginning of gen x, but most people don't think I'm that old. I was astonished that this young person thought that; so much so that I didn't know what to say or how to respond. Anyone have any ideas for the next time this happens? I'm sure at the years go by, this sentiment among the young will grow stronger.

Very thought provoking film. After she helps the old woman Kathy a cross the river, she is looking up at the mountain again... Then it's over... I wanted her to go see what was up there. Please explain the ending.
Thx for the comments. If you noticed, she hears the siren in the dream sequence all the time - that is sort of like a premonition of what is going to happen to her. So in my interpretation I think she gets caught by the police for what she has done.
I know this question was intended for the film's creator and if my reply is incorrect she will reply with a correction. I personally think the film has allegorically told in the story she related from grandmother followed with a reply of, 'history repeats itself' and and literally shown to the viewer. Excellent film. Terrifying and yet beautiful. Real emotion that rang so true that I was literally in tears. This old literature and creative writing teacher thanks you for this true art. Well done, you.
For the historical reference, look up 楢山節考, Narayama Bushikō. On RUclips it may be listed in English as "The Ballad of Narayama". It is a very famous Japanese work.
When I saw the camp in the mountains I had a vision of the Nazi death camps. It was here that they took their elderly to terminate them and to dispose of the bodies in the volcano. Since we all will someday become old like Mary and the man on the bus, I hope such things will never become reality.
This is a beautiful production, from the bottom to the top. The script, the performances, the camera work and design, all pull together to create a deeply meaningful film. If you can't understand this from every angle, don't blink -- you'll be in all of their shoes one day. I would especially like to compliment the graphic artist for the stunning poster art.
@@7Steels this is another one that my comment doesn't register... artworks are done by Edward Distarce, Tom Szorady, and Kiyoshi Tsukamoto. They are wonderful artists
Heart-breaking doesn't even come close to expressing the emotions brought into play from this Film. Incredible acting, and the pacing to it's story was top tier. Bravo! 👏
Your film is very well done. It’s very sad & is a reminder of what can happen in a society that doesn’t take measures before it’s too late. Even now, there are several countries that forbid the use of birth control. The main character did an exceptional job in her part. I find it interesting how her daughters are totally unaware of the prevailing situation. From the expression on her face at the end, she sacrificed herself for the old woman, perhaps making up for the loss of her mother sometime in the past. I have heard that the world population has slowed down on overpopulation. Some are worried that the population could reverse itself to the point of near extinction. I haven’t verified any of this, but it doesn’t take much to cause the world population to go either way.
Hi Cee thank you for the comment. I hope the society in general, in addition, is systematically inclusive of every communities including our elders so no one community feels left out. I assume that is major task in itself but I want to use our film to get closer to the characters to summon our emotion, to the 'neigborly love' looking out for each other. Thank you for watching
@@SusumuKimuraLA I couldn’t agree more. And now that I’m one of the elderly, I can certainly understand how it feels to be treated like you don’t matter.
a non-tech scifi, more on the social, ethical side. The big question you sculpted here in dark marble is how to deal with the avalanche of aging people within a paradigm that is from the 19th century... all developed societies are running on the wrong track, as nowhere anyone is to try to change the paradigms. Those include aging in health, staying productive by changing into mindful businesses, dedicated training of the aging people such that they can learn. It is the wrong paradigm of aging that creates the problem of age, it is not aging itself. Now you did a more diagnostic, or fatalistic piece, in amazing photography, perfectly demonstrating the consequences of a wrong paradigm. My question to you: Can you imagine a constructing, positive piece outside of the current paradigm? Though not sth like junipero that deals with palliative aspects only... Thank you for this great piece of Art !!!
hi monnoo, thank you for your comments! Our film is lensed by my friend Dana Malinska, and she did some amazing work here with her crew. It is also colored by Bobby Lam who is also DP. So please follow them if you are curious of their careers! To answer your question, honestly I don't know. For me it is more about building a society that doesn't look people based on only what contributions (power, money, influence, environment et) they make - the society who look at elderlies as covid raged on and said "they had their times" - I just cannot bare the sinister look like that. Then what, I really have no idea, but as I edited this thru covid times, all I wanted was to see the beauty and good of people who care for neighbors and taking actions, which, I think it still exists the world.
Wow I could watch this as a series❤In our culture the elders would walk into the bush during hard winters. If they made it threw winter they would rejoin their family in spring. You loved your family. And viewed them as the true legacy you leave behind. Not money or property ❤❤assuring your bloodline carries on❤
Mia Ando shines in this. My wife and I felt everything she felt in this most painful, desperate, anguished short we took to be based on the current huge gap between the haves and have nots. Looking on IMDB we were surprised to see so few credits. We expect this actress to become extremely well known when a part in a major work finds her. Seriously, Mia Ando deserves recognition. The only complaint I can find is the graphic obvously based on a concentration camp and the tracks ending before approaching the viewer and going offscreen (presumably) to the city. Every time you see billionaires and corporations which pay no taxes given another tax break please think of the increasingly shrinking "middle class" and growing poverty. If the middle class doesn't grow NOBODY will do well except the 1%.
Hi Ghimmy, I totally agree with you. She will do great things and I am proud to have this film with her! I take your criticism about graphic nature of camp shot. I wanted to treat with the most care because of the history of concentration camps in the world. I am sorry if it evoked too much emotion.
The mountain is actually a volcano! The director of this short film is subtly hinting about the ill-fated ancient city, Pompeii. That is brilliant. I also feel sad about the way we are slowly becoming inhuman to the extent of discarding the elders in such a cruel fashion. I am 80 (eighty) and thankfully this may not be my fate!!! (:
Good job. A hopeless and helpless situation with no happy ending in sight. Like it or not we are all on this big blue marble together. We have the wisdom and foresight to create a happy future for the old, as well as the young. Will we use it?
I can see an elderly couple walking along and softly singing: "The water is wide, I cannot get over Neither have I wings to fly Give me a boat that can carry two And both shall row, my love and I..."
“In the depths of the mountains, Who was it for the aged mother snapped One twig after another? Heedless of herself She did so For the sake of her son”
Great film, thank you and congratulations to all involved. You packed more story into 15 minutes than most movies manage in two hours! Captivating performance by Mia Ando.
Harrowing film. The scene at the ad agency was perfectly etched; deeply upsetting and set up the 2nd half beautifully. Excellent casting and superior production values. Bravo!
At the tender age of seventy I've seen so much science fiction that has become reality, and this is a certainty. Apart from that , a brilliant movie where everything is perfect. Well done. Next up the mountain ?
History hasn't changed. The high powers are destroying humanity as we speak and not just the elderly. Total power and wealth is their goal. Great work, thanks for sharing.
Oh shut up. What do you know about being destroyed, really? You live in safety and privilege while in many places whole nations are being erased. But you go on with your melodramatic proclamations
@@SusumuKimuraLA Quite rightly so. This is ALREADY happening the world over, especially in the 'developed' world, where there is an exaggerated worship of youth (easily malleable) and contempt for the elderly. Sad. But works like this might help somehow. That's my hope.
Almost a poem as a short movie. It took me the second watching to realize the siren was related the resettlement effort. The movie depicted very well the inequity in the society. The lead Mia Ando expressed a range of emotions. It was almost too subtle to catch - they were about to be homeless due to not enough income to pay the rent and already living in the inexpensive part of the city. Off camera, the mother was likely not eating to make sure her daughters at least had something to eat at school to keep up some level of appearance. The haunting question is, "How would your behave if this was the hand you were dealt in life?" and "What would you tell your children, knowing what is up the mountain?"
"The Mountain", a nursing home, a dump to discard the elderly, to forget about them, they will die soon enough and our burden will be lighter after we discard them, until it is our time comes to be discarded
From the actors and actresses... through to the visuals and my the music and audio scape. The lead character conveyed so much without saying anything verbally. Captivation, intoxicating and engaging... Think it reminded me of Logans Run? but either way, well done
Great story. It really touches on the human soul. "Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.”- Buddha
Hi Thank you for your comment. I refer you to the movie by great Shohei Imamura called The Ballad of Narayama, which describes this legend of Ubasuteyama. I want to explore more in the feature version so stay tuned!
A good time for this, as old people are being thrown under the bus more and more. Since Covid, with most people rejecting taking precautions, and elderly and disabled being picked off earlier and more often, we too are looking at a dystopian old age.

For the historical reference, look up 楢山節考, Narayama Bushikō. On RUclips it may be listed in English as "The Ballad of Narayama". It is a very famous Japanese work.
thank you for pointing to this.
When I saw the camp in the mountains I had a vision of the Nazi death camps. It was here that they took their elderly to terminate them and to dispose of the bodies in the volcano. Since we all will someday become old like Mary and the man on the bus, I hope such things will never become reality.
This short is becoming so relevant nowadays. Thank you to the filmmakers.
Excellant film and actors thank you!!
thank you for watching!
Gosh, this made me tear up. The main actress is so good
This is a beautiful production, from the bottom to the top. The script, the performances, the camera work and design, all pull together to create a deeply meaningful film. If you can't understand this from every angle, don't blink -- you'll be in all of their shoes one day. I would especially like to compliment the graphic artist for the stunning poster art.
Yes... that poster art was masterfully done.
@@7Steels this is another one that my comment doesn't register... artworks are done by Edward Distarce, Tom Szorady, and Kiyoshi Tsukamoto. They are wonderful artists
Wonderful. It makes you sense the horror without showing it. Little money, great interpretation for this precious jewel.
Mia is a great actor!
agreed!
That was incredibly well done, Thank you for sharing this with us all. Stunning.
Thank you so much!!!
This film peanuts my butter!!!!!
what a beautiful shortfilm, full of meaning and emotions, I love it so much 😢
Heart-breaking doesn't even come close to expressing the emotions brought into play from this Film. Incredible acting, and the pacing to it's story was top tier. Bravo! 👏
Thank you so much! our actors were excellent.
I smell a musical!! 😅🎼🎼
Brilliant, not many films would choose to tackle the issue of demographic collapse like this.
thank you David!
@@SusumuKimuraLA thank you for making it. 😀
Excellent!! Very moving!!
Thank you!
I love the atmosphere that the music created!!
Thank you! check our composer Charlotte Partt! Check out her Soundcloud :)
wow this was great, could/should have been a movie
Thank you!
I am 71, feeling older, looking at a bleak future. Living in van. Little money. Your film mirrors my internal state.
55 here. I’m sorry you’re going through this; the way we treat our elders is shameful. You deserve more than that .
top notch, well done!!! great soundtrack too 🔥
The best stories teach us; or reminds us. Remember...,"The past is prologue."
wow scary
She seems to be torn between feeding her kids and conforming to reality of what’s going on. This reminds me of the movie “Soylent Green”.
Thank you Mitchell. I heard so many comments on comparing to Soylent Green and I'm honored!
a non-tech scifi, more on the social, ethical side.
I loved the sentiment you have portrayed in this film. Would like to see more of your work ☺
Крутой фильм, на основе сюжета можно даже полнометражный снять.!!!
Wow I could watch this as a series❤In our culture the elders would walk into the bush during hard winters. If they made it threw winter they would rejoin their family in spring. You loved your family. And viewed them as the true legacy you leave behind. Not money or property ❤❤assuring your bloodline carries on❤
This is great work!!,. Hope to see more
Thank you! working on the feature version :)
...the long low huts, the train, the fire high in the background...enough said....wonderful short, thank you!
Thank you so much!
I can see an elderly couple walking along and softly singing:
"The water is wide, I cannot get over
Neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I..."
“In the depths of the mountains,
Who was it for the aged mother snapped
One twig after another?
Heedless of herself
She did so
For the sake of her son”
Thanks for the comment! That is a beautiful song...
Sumptuously! Respect to the film makers!
Thx to my cast & crew!
I haven't watched it all yet, but halfway through Soylent Green came to mind.
thx, lots of people mention this. And yes, I hope you finish it!
Great film, thank you and congratulations to all involved. You packed more story into 15 minutes than most movies manage in two hours! Captivating performance by Mia Ando.
Thank you! I'm glad you felt that way :)
Great work and storytelling. Main actress Mia Ando did such much to bring the emotions across even with no words spoken.
thank you! yes she's amazing
this reminded me of a modern take on Soylent Green except I assume they are being dropped into a live volcano, well done. I really like to see more.
That is how I imagined it too. Thx for your comment
Very traditional Japanese in it's emotional tragedy..... I loved it!
Thank you so much!
Harrowing film. The scene at the ad agency was perfectly etched; deeply upsetting and set up the 2nd half beautifully. Excellent casting and superior production values. Bravo!
Thank you!!!
She shouldn't feel guilty she needs to feed her daughters. It's a cruel world and isn't getting better any time soon.
Thank you for your note. That is the conundrum I wanted to hit at.
Great story and acting. Thought provoking.
"What's in The Mountain?"
"Managed Health Care".
" What's in The River"?
"Medicaid ".
"What's the difference"?
"Yes".
Is this even fiction? Is it? Live long and prosper, yeah, right! I'm sorry but this short is too good.
Thank you! I did feel weird while writing and making this far-fetched concept into a story, it began to be not too far-fetched anymore
@@SusumuKimuraLA Quite rightly so. This is ALREADY happening the world over, especially in the 'developed' world, where there is an exaggerated worship of youth (easily malleable) and contempt for the elderly. Sad. But works like this might help somehow. That's my hope.
@@lucar01inos16 I hope for the same thing. Thank you!
What an incredible masterpiece. It lasted too short. Please make a feature film or at least make a second part. 🔝🔝🔝
thank you! that's in the works
@@SusumuKimuraLA great news!
Beautiful film and outstanding performance!
Thank you for watching!
The haunting question is, "How would your behave if this was the hand you were dealt in life?" and "What would you tell your children, knowing what is up the mountain?"
love your comment so much! thank you John
It was perfect!
Thank you Inez! appreaciate it
Perhaps a glimpse into what may be our dark future, Very thought provoking. Well done.
thank you!
Sadly beautiful. Feels eerily familiar (being in America...).
Thank you Becky!
Mia Ando's acting was very believable and well timed. This is quite a touching subject and it's very close to home. Well done!!
thank you woodstoney!
"The Mountain", a nursing home, a dump to discard the elderly, to forget about them, they will die soon enough and our burden will be lighter after we discard them, until it is our time comes to be discarded
The music score is brilliant as well.
thank you! Follow Charlotte Partt
Excellent acting. Powerful.
The very best example of “Show. Don’t tell.”
Thank you! I appreciate this so much.
From the actors and actresses... through to the visuals and my the music and audio scape.
The lead character conveyed so much without saying anything verbally. Captivation, intoxicating and engaging... Think it reminded me of Logans Run? but either way, well done
Thank you! Her name is Mia Ando
Well done.
Simply Brilliant!!!
Thank you!
This will stay with me for a long time. Thank you for posting/sharing..
Thank you! appreciated!

Thank you so much for watching the film, Mak! We appreciate you!
another patronizing thumbs up… well placed
Great story. It really touches on the human soul.
"Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.”- Buddha
Wow thank you. and to think that I came from 'Buddhist' country (not really) which is Japan and I had no idea of this quote :(
I really would like to see the story told from the POV of an adult carrying their parent up the mountain. This is a HUGE storytelling opportunity.
Hi Thank you for your comment. I refer you to the movie by great Shohei Imamura called The Ballad of Narayama, which describes this legend of Ubasuteyama. I want to explore more in the feature version so stay tuned!
@@SusumuKimuraLA Look forward to it! The back and forth between the 2 on such a journey would be an interesting story!
A good time for this, as old people are being thrown under the bus more and more. Since Covid, with most people rejecting taking precautions, and elderly and disabled being picked off earlier and more often, we too are looking at a dystopian old age.
Thank you Nancy for the comment. I do share the same feeling.
