Johnny, I think no room for a refugium in this sump is a GREAT thing. It's not convenient having a refugium and light in the same cabinet space as your sump, filters and hoses. The light creates algae on every surface in contact with water and dirties the sump and equipment. In addition, rogue chaeto that makes its way out and into pumps can also be a bad thing. What you did by moving it to it's own separate cabinet space was an EXCELLENT idea. Though, something to think about. If you're pulling out all of your detritus and uneaten food with the fleece, using a skimmer and only feeding what is needed, do you really need chaeto? You may not! One interesting thing that I have seen for those reefers with one open compartment under their tank who want a refugium in their sump is a blacked out bucket refugium and scrubbers that don't let light out. Hopefully the sump will be available again soon so I can buy one myself! Thanks for the video!

The sumps with the V1 controller has a bad board that will go bad causing the floats to stop working. BRS says they have had only one report in 1000 ...what else would they say cause it would costs them tens of thousands of dollars to recall them and to take of their site and what they have in stock. I think Trigger knew about the bad circuit boards but just took a chance and felt it would be cheaper to send a repair kit out. I received an email that the owner knew about this issue and so does BRS. So just be on the watch that these will stop on some sooner or later and could let your sump over flow.

I just got the new updated board and replaced it. Only issue i have is adding equipment to sump area. Fleece roller takes space up for protein skimmer and area for refugium.

I would have add the gate valve on the return line to create more back pressure flow on the refugium. Elsewise nice setup!

dude this is awesome. i have a 450 and have been planning on doing this forever! nervous about the plumbing. i like what you did... not broadfield clean but gets the job done and cheap. i ordered the retrofit parts from red sea i will try to do it that way but good to know if it doesnt work this is a solid plan b with readily available and cheap parts! hate how red sea pidgeonholed us with their plumbing and setup

man, you got a build thread somewhere? id love to see some more pics. also, is the weight of the pvc and gate cause any or stress on the tank bulkhead? also did you stick with 3/4" plumbing?

Can you show me how to connected the rubber flanges to the red sea pieces? did you still use the sump pump return that they have or did you connect straight to the return pipe that runs under the tank. I have a 450 that I want to change out from metric to US piping.

I kept the downspouts in the back of the tank that pass through into the sump area. This is where i disconnected the Red Sea plumping that feeds the pump. Here is a pic of the flange connection to the downspouts

Hows it working out for u so far I just ordered one and I've got a 425 xl reefer and a red sea skimmer is the refuagim area to small to have it in the sump

Haider Altimimi yes. I had to put my Red Sea skimmer in the area where the Refugium would go. So i make a 10 galling seperate Refugium in another cabinet base of my Reefer 350. As of now no issues at all. I used the trigger 8 gallon ATO reservoir to make the Refugium since it’s narrow.

How is the roller mat holding up? Are you happy with the system a year later?
