To reduce the number of trips up and down stairs I used what we used to call a binary search. Say you have 50 circuit breakers, turn off the first 25 and check if you located the circuit in 1 to 25.
If so repeat with 1 to 13 turned off and check again, repeating til you narrow it down. Obviously if not in 1 to 25 turn off 26 to 50 and repeat, etc. It worked for me with just 3 trips when locating a circuit that was not named on the panel from previous owner.
Pinned to the top! This is an excellent method
Checking with something that makes noise is awesome. I do like the yelling "Did it go out??", "No.", "How about now??" method too
Yes that’s one way!
Lmfaooo this comment made my damn day 🤣🤣
Thank you this was very helpful.
That helped! Thank you!!
I’m trying to replace a light switch in a 3 gang switch box. 1 to my front porch (this one to change out), 1 to my foyer and 1 to my motion security lights on the 4 corners of my house.
Found the front porch & foyer breakers as they were labeled but couldn’t find the breaker for the security lights.
After trying each breaker w none turning off the security lights I just turned ALL the breakers off but there is still power to the 3 switches. I’m using Klein voltage meter that continues to blink red to all switches in the box.
Any ideas?
I’ll eventually just turn off power to the panel to do the swap but I find it strange the way there’s still power even turnoff all the breakers.
may i ask where the backyard outlet's breaker is usually located .... thanks in advance
I like your new video today you did a good jop buddy
If you have an outlet that isn't working and want to change it out, it doesn't do any good to plug a lamp or hairdryer into it because - IT'S NOT WORKING! Usually, you want to find a circuit breaker for a light switch that isn't working or an outlet that isn't working.
This is my issue. And unfortunately I don’t know what else it’s tied in with. I don’t know why electricians don’t label it all when they do it to begin with. Probably so you have to call them back lol
So you can turn off ALL the breakers to the house and use a flashlight while you change the outlet. Done.
How about if I just have Romex in the wall and I want to put a new outlet in? I guess to be safe just turn off every breaker to the house.
So a 10x12 shed would be a double switch?
Thanks.
Trying to find the doorbell circuit breaker…sucks!
When i did residential the doorbell was usually wired with low volt into the furnace
I wish I found this earlier
Something that makes sound.....hair dryer haha id probably use a radio if if im working by myself
i have two outside outlets not working, and no breaker tripped. any suggestions, guys?
Popped GFCI outlet. Usually all “wet areas, bathroom, kitchen, and exterior outlets” are required to have GFCI protection. The first outlet in the circuit just has to be GFCI. So you may not have one at each outlet. Exterior outlets can be powered from anywhere so start looking!
@@TheDurbinCompound got it. Thank you very much
How do i find a doorbell breaker?
Hummmm have someone ring the doorbell until it stops. Or it’s the only breaker that you can’t find that it does anything.
A double breaker can be for 120v circuits. A dual wired circuit where the red and neutral is one 120v circuit and the black and neutral is the other 120v circuit. It’s 220v wired breaker that does not power 220v lights and outlets. Be aware of it.
If it was wired to be a “dual circuit” on a 3 wire / ground (red, black, white, ground) then the breaker tie in should be removed to indicate it was wired like that.
@@TheDurbinCompoundThis should not be done at all. Removing the tie will be dangerous for anyone working on the circuit. By only turning one breaker off in a dual or shared neutral circuit, one would think that that the neutral was dead when it actually is still used by half of the shared circuit and live.
Wooo marines!

old Murray breakers may get baked in and not trip when they should... here is how I learned my 2¢:
When we moved in to our current house, we had it painted and all light fixtures were removed.
During the new fixture installation, one of the screw on a ceiling fixture taped into a live wire... big sunshine flash right in my face at the top of the lader!
NONE of the Murray brakers had tripped, instead the 12AWG wire melted apart.
When I realized that... I swapped ALL the stupid panel breakers for better Schneider-SQUARE-D (like $6Ea at HmDepot)
Very simple to do, just flip the Main to Off so the 2 bus bars are no longer Hot! If unclear ask licensed professional.
Be curious create a short test to see for yourself. Good modern breakers have a dual protection built-in: slow + fast (not mentioning GFCI or AFCI which offer above and beyond supreme circuit protection)
👍
How do find smoke detectors on the panel
Usually is the breaker that doesn’t seem to do anything! You would probably be best to use a non contact voltage tester and a second person. Take off the smoke detector and use the voltage tester to determine when power goes away
Heat off
Deben, Semper Fi...
Whoa, that intro needs some work 😵
all but worthless ...
Dryer stopped heating after reseting a breaker to fix an outlet which caused all the power to go out. Reset the main and got the power back. Dryer stopped heating and checked all the fuses but were fine. Trying to determine which breaker is for the dryer to reset it and this really helped me narrow it down. Thanks.
