Weinberg, such an amazing composer. His whole family were killed by the nazis. Shostakovich saved him from the gulag in Stalinist Russia. And a music so profound, so touching, full of textures and passsages. This piece in particular brings tears to my eyes. An impeccable and heart felt performance. ❤
I think this might be the most beautiful piece of music I've heard in my entire life and the performance is breathtaking. Headphones on - defy you to be unmoved.
Hi Paul. This is truly a masterpiece. There are the great concertos such as the Emperor but like Walton's Viola Concerto this one ranks with anything Beethoven or Brahms produced.
Szostakowicz was his friend, Unfortunately he lived in Soviet Union and if you don’t play the note with the government you suffer poverty . What a performance !!! Wonderful piece for Cello! Bartok and Mozart had similar fate.
Bravo!! Stamp! Whistle! Cheer! In the finest tradition of Casals, Rostropovich, Tortelier, Fournier, YoYo Ma, Maisky and other luminaries of the art, we see Sol Gabetta carrying the flag with the most consummately skillful artistry. Long may she continue to do so.
@@gerardoarcos9440 Hey there, thanks for response. Thinking back, I think it was one of the 17 Cello Sonatas. not concerto. If you find pls respond, my 2 cellists and I are looking to. Then there's all the viola pieces. many recorded by woman named Adler recently. All regards DG
Beloved human being - how does one live a life such as his? Did no one love him, hold him near? Mankind! What a magnificent creation! There are geniuses whose works are not picked up on, the zeitgeist is not right. Another great victim was Hermann Broch who practically resolved the question of human alienation- violence. Of course, brutal men wouldn't want to know about that: they'd be no way to victimize human life.
Whether or not this happened, there is no question that Weinberg's work has a Jewish character. One doesn't have to be ethnically Jewish for this to happen: Prokofiev and Shostakovitch have it too.
Hey they were connected thruout their lives. Many themes shared back and forth. They were near neighbors for years. 27 Sym, 17 st qt. ! so many unknown Russian composers lost to history!
wiki article questions/discusses the conversion. My intro to Jewish was going to music schools where most of musicians were Jews. Of course, Russia etc. was full of them....
A more amazing story is that Bergson wanted to convert to Christianity but when the persecution of Jews began in Germany in the thirties, Bergson remained a Jew to keep faith with the persecuted. This is very 'Jewish'. Much Jewish thinking is based on such a 'sociality' - best expressed in philosophy by the work of Emmanuel Levinas. Of course, many Jews converted out of necessity throughout history, just as many Sufis claimed to be followers of Islam (Rumi, Hafiz) - just to survive. Tells us something about human beings.
Unbelievably boring playing. The opening movement should be by turns weeping and ecstatic. The only way this could be lauded is by those who have not heard the history of cello playing, let alone this piece, and do not realise how much further there is to go. This masterpiece deserves so much better.
Bouleversant et sublime hommage. Gratitude Sol 💐

Outstanding music. Feast for the ears.
The most beautiful music I have ever heard is composed by Mieczysław Weinberg
Sol Gabetta brilha nesse concerto. Excelente interpretação. Parabéns.

Listen to the Rostropovich version. It’s in a different universe of expression. This is an utterly prosaic reading of this masterpiece in comparison
WOW! 3:44 The build-up! Dropping straight into that low C on the cello!
Her powers of concentration are so intense. She gets us to hear the joy and anguish conveyed in the music.

It's just a privilege to listen to her, an even greater privilege to watch her. What a great musician.

too good to be true. Excellent performance!!
This is the first time to hear this concerto
Really inspiration
Gabetta is fabulous but she is also great to bring Weinberg's music to the fore. His Symphonies are changing many composers and music lovers !
*SHE IS PERFECT CELLIST!! BEST INTERPRETATION)))I WANT TO PLAY WITH CONCERT! THANKS A LOT!!* 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Yes
Wonderful piece, great solo playing, orchestral playing and conducting. Not often you hear or see that combination. Thanks so much for posting
This is 21st century World Music : everyone should know Weinberg's sad story and his wonderful music.
There was someone back in the 50s that carried the torch for MW, wiki has an extended article on this genius.
This is a beautiful concerto, and, as always, Sol Gabetta gives a beautiful performance!
Fine work, exciting 'Allegro' and, after 8:00, some Romanian klezmer motifs, echoes of Minsk. BRAVI!
Excellent woodwind writing (and playing).

Extraordinario compositor.

The Title is false, the concerto is written in c minor!

This is in C minor (not D minor), and written in 1948 (not 1958, as stated in the title above)
Spread the word, there is another cello concerto equal to if not better than Elgar's.

Weinberg?
