I'm no expert by any means; I'm just going by the limited research I've done. Sometimes mothers get mastitus and they're so sore they stop nursing, sometimes it's immaturity. When they hand their babies over to other females for a short time, from what I understand it's not only to take a little break, but also it helps socialize the baby to other gorillas, which is very important that the baby is accepted by others. There can be many reasons, of which nobody fully understands.
It’s a matter of Gladys’ nutrition. She has to be able to toddle to the mesh for her bottles. The surrogate can also be trained to take Gladys to the mesh.
I realize you have the best intentions for Gladys, however, why do you guys think you know more about bringing up a baby Gorilla then one of the females, who have been mothers? Family is everything to a Gorilla, and it appears the others accept Gladys. The social and family interactions Gladys needs to learn to be a Gorilla, will only succeed by developing permanent bonds with a family unit of her own kind. She has to know her place in the troupe, and only a Gorilla can teach her this.
I just love this little baby. She is really getting big and getting around so well.

I am curious as to why you did not let one of the female gorilla's be her mother since she was little would that not have been better for her?

Awesome baby
unfortunately that wasn't an option as none of the females are lactating...
