Andy playing the music was more than just defiance. He did it mainly to rekindle the hope in his heart that he would make it out.

Back in the day, the prison systems would release parolees with a suit, a case, a temporary job (They were responsible for finding permanent jobs themselves), and a temporary place to stay. They had to provide their own meals with the pay from the job. Those are the ONLY things that an ex-con was guaranteed to receive, to get themselves back on their feet.

Glad you understand the meaning of this film. Redemption, Love, Friendship, HOPE. P.S. This film is rated as a Masterpiece and is the best film ever made. So when you feel down watch this film again. I am a 71 old pensioner. 2024 and still watch this. Dave in Guernsey, Channel Islands.

I love this movie as an allegory of finding freedom within. When he risks everything to share music: Andy knew that this would give his mates a brief moment of freedom. And he was ok with the self sacrifice.

You are in with a large crowd in not getting the name right. The movie bombed at the box office thanks to releasing the same year as other block busters of the time like Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction and thanks to the name of the movie. People just never could get the name right so the ever important word of mouth advertising for the movie didn't happen because people couldn't get the name right. After it released to video it built up the cult following it richly deserved by being such a damned good movie. Also the movie name was shortened from the original as being too long and confusing. It started as Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.

Dude what in the world are you talking about? This comment has about as much of the Spirit of Jesus Christ in it as the Warden from this movie.
      Psalms 50:16-23
[16] But to the wicked person, God says: “What right have you to recite my laws or take my covenant on your lips? [17] You hate my instruction and cast my words behind you. [18] When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers. [19] You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit. [20] You sit and testify against your brother and slander your own mother’s son.
[21] "When you did these things and I kept silent, you thought I was exactly like you. But I now arraign you and set my accusations before you. [22] Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you: [23] Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me, and to the blameless I will show my salvation.”
