A lot of people miss the fact that it only took Andy 17 years to dig the tunnel, not 19. He had already been in Shawshank for two years before he asked Red to get him Rita Hayworth.
@larsyxa I didn't say that Red said 19 years. I was referring to people watching the movie. I've seen MANY reactions to this because it's one of my favorites and a lot of people (as I said in my original post) think that it took Andy all 19 years because they forget that, even though he got the rock hammer soon after he arrived in 1947, he didn't ask Red for Rita until 1949, as we hear Red mention at the beginning.
Andy told the truth in court…he threw the gun in the river. He probably had personal mementos under the rock but he added ‘treasures’ for Red to give him hope. The Bible which held the rock hammer was literally in the warden’s hand while Andy’s cell is tossed. I like how even though the characters don’t really look older after 19 years, you can see the passage of time with a pair of reading glasses, updated posters,”new fish” coming in… Hope is the major message here. Brooks had no hope…when he left the prison the camera view was towards the prison, his “home”. When Red left, the camera view was outside the prison. Brooks clutched the bus rails in terror. Red held his bag in anticipation, insecurity, and a little anxiety about the unknown. I love how the prisoners talked about Andy afterwards with a little hero worship, wonder and hope of their own. I can’t say enough about this film honestly but you had me crying harder than normal during Brooks scenes 😭 Great reaction 👍
I think in some way knowing or at least believing that Andy was truly innocent also lent him a bit of martyrs air to the remaining prisoners, combined with having both escaped, fleeced the warden and gotten even it wa just the perfect end to his story for them, a legend that could not be matched.
You mentioned the Royal River which is an accurate because there is a river with that actual name not far from where I live here in Maine. When they said that they dragged the Royal River but couldn’t find the gun it’s very believable because the river is quite large, wide, deep and the current is unbelievably fast so it is very possible that anything that was thrown into the river would move down stream and end up in the ocean.
@@kevincosta9228 Indeed, and in all these years I never spotted that before. Hi Lipps, great reaction to a near perfect movie. This is a real roller-coaster of emotions. The part that gets me most, is when Andy plays Mozart's Marriage of Figaro on the tannoy. To a prison full of grizzled, hard-core lags, who have had little access to the pleasantries of life for so long. It must have sounded like a pair of Angels had visited upon them. Truly heartwarming. BTW, if you have shifted to reacting to more 'mainstream' movies, I advise you (with your obvious empathy) to steer clear of the movie 'Up'. Good job with Shawshank, keep up the great reactions. ; )

I sometimes wonder where Andy really escaped to. Cus we only get the story from Red, and red says in the book that he changed all those details in case someone found the story up his ass when he was paroled.
Great reaction Lipps like always, this is a masterpiece of cinema, A masterclass in pretty much every category. An incredible script, wonderful direction, gorgeous score and phenomenal performances by Freeman and Robbins. Some fun facts about this movie, Stephen King sold the rights for $1,000, The baseball throwing scene took 9 hours The scene where Andy and Red are standing and talking outside whilst Red is throwing a baseball back and forth took a staggering nine hours to film. Morgan Freeman threw the ball endlessly the whole time. The following day, when he arrived at work, his arm was in a sling. Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford were considered for Red, and Brad Pitt audition for the role of Tommy but he pulled out of the role because of another movie, later Brad Pitr said he regretted that decision. Red’s mugshot is Morgan Freeman’s son , When you see Morgan Freeman’s papers at one of his parole hearings, there are mugshots of a younger Red attached. These are actually photos of Alfonso Freeman - Morgan’s son. He also had a small part in the movie. He was one of the inmates shouting ‘Fresh fish!’ Stephen King’s novella was titled, ‘Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.’ This was shortened for the film because they didn’t want people to think it was a biopic about Rita Hayworth. This was proven to be true when several actresses applied for the ‘lead role of Rita Hayworth’. Keep up the amazing work.
"He's not Andy anymore." THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THIS MOVIE IS. Its an allegory for becoming free. You wade through a river of s---- and come out clean on the other side.
This movie is orders of magnitude better than the book. It, quite literally, blows it out of the water. The book is great, but the movie is one of the greatest ever made.
For several years, my Dad had always been curious to watch this film, purely because it was the highest rated film on IMDb. He FINALLY watched last Christmas when it was shown on TV. He spent the whole time on his laptop 🤦
A common question asked of this movie is ... how did Andy get the poster perfectly taped up from within the hole? I wonder why he wouldn't have kept the rock hammer ... or left it in the Bible. You'd think he would want to keep the item that set him free or make sure the warden found it ... really stick it to him. There was no reason to take it with you only to leave it in the creek where it might go lost. And how did he carve the pages in the Bible so precisely? 😉
So I’ve always wondered, how does he crawl head first into the hole, then put the poster back over the hole on the wall? And what is it fixed onto the wall with?
Loved your reaction. Please don't extrapolate any broad messages about prisons from this movie. It takes place in 1947 and, even in that setting, represents a fictionalized account of the worst excesses. I used to work in corrections, and just about everything people believe about the system is based on Hollywood which is entirely wrong. It makes for great stories, but please don't draw any conclusions from movies.
Someone pointed out that in the scene when Brooks got out of prison it showed him with the prison behind him, showing his life was in that prison. When Red got out, it was shot with the prison not on screen, with the open world in front of him, showing that his life was still in front of him and he could leave the prison behind. I don't know if this was on purpose, but every time I see those scenes now I think of that
It was on purpose. They did two parallels with red and brooks. The camera is one. The other was when they were talking about being sent back. Brooks said he wants them to send him back home and red repeats it but just said he wants them to send him back.
A proper hangman's knot takes a fair amount of rope. Required length is dependent on the diameter of the rope since part of the knot is wrapping the end around three strands of rope 6-8 times. Could easily use 2-3 feet just in the knot plus the amount needed to go around the neck.
You should react to another movie called In The Name of the Father. It's a true story about the Guilford four. Wrongly jailed for Bombings in England in the 70s
Close enough either way re: money value from comment or below. I have it as about 9 times now, what the money was back then in 1966. Basically was prob 10 times as mentioned below in 1949 when Guard Byron Hadley inherited 35k then. interesting writing twist here: So he got the equivalent of approx. 315k; but he writer and/or director had it explained as 35k in 1996 when the movie came out (?) To make the audience equate it to about the value of a car then as Hadley said he could maybe just buy.. In fact, he could have bought 116 very nice cars. the average 1949 Cadillac went for just under 3k (5- seat coupe, room for his pestering kids...). Add the 3% sales tax of about $87-$90 and say 3k out the door paying full msrp.
The irony for the Warden is that if he'd actually pursued Tommy's story and taken it to the relevant authorities then either A - Andy gets a full pardon and never breathes a word about the money laundering etc... and the Warden gets to keep the money Or B - No one believes Tommy, Elmo Blatch denies it (or he's since died or cannot be tracked down etc...) and says Tommy is making it up. So Andy stays in prison for a while longer, before making his escape but he doesn't hate the Warden because at least he done his best to help Andy with Tommy's information. So when Andy does escape he probably doesn't send all that evidence to the papers. He just takes the money and goes to Mexico Either way, things would have worked out better for the Warden if he hadn't been such a scumbag about Tommy's story
Great reaction. But there is no need for him to hide the gun because the gun would have proven him innocent. The whole reason he was convicted is exactly because the gun was never found.
I really wouldn't call it a must. It's a good movie but I watched it once and that was good enough for me. Too supernatural. On the other hand I've watched Shawshank probably 10 times and will watch it a few more. Never gets old.

Myth Busters need to see if it's possible to crawl through 500 yards of shit smelling foulness without passing out and dying.
Probably not. That was actually chocolate syrup, water and sawdust.
@@j.woodbury412wait a minute. A movie used a prop? Like a movie prop you could say? No way. You’re blowing my mind right now. Can you also please confirm that the sun is hot and water is wet? Thanks, goober.

@@willdallas53 I was responding to ckobo84's comment about Mythbusters testing to see if it was possible to tunnel through 500 yards of sh*t without passing out.
The methane gas in the pipe would kill you being in it that long.
Some fun facts about this movie, Stephen King sold the rights for $1,000,
The baseball throwing scene took 9 hours The scene where Andy and Red are standing and talking outside whilst Red is throwing a baseball back and forth took a staggering nine hours to film.
He was one of the inmates shouting ‘Fresh fish!’
Stephen King’s novella was titled, ‘Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.’ This was shortened for the film because they didn’t want people to think it was a biopic about Rita Hayworth. This was proven to be true when several actresses applied for the ‘lead role of Rita Hayworth’. Keep up the amazing work.
Of course you try to guess where the story is going, just as everyone else does. It's your empathy and sensitivity that makes it a great watch along.
I don't comment much at all but you did an outstanding job. This is my first time with you but I promise not my last. God bless you for this
Sometimes I just miss my friend. Gets me every time.
"He's not Andy anymore." THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THIS MOVIE IS. Its an allegory for becoming free. You wade through a river of s---- and come out clean on the other side.
Great Reaction to Shawshank Redemption.
😂👍

Message from Brooks.
I'm OK.
Oh, wait a minute.
😇
The new name will be easy to remember, Randy instead of Andy.🕊️🐬🐟🐠🦅
Andy gave Red hope, a reason to keep going.
It's always a toss up between this movie and The Green Mile as the best movie ever. Both by the same director 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nice reaction! and your cat is realy amazing!
You always seem to make me cry.
That’s a good thing sweetheart.
This is in my top rated movies.
Keep them coming.❤
A common question asked of this movie is ... how did Andy get the poster perfectly taped up from within the hole? I wonder why he wouldn't have kept the rock hammer ... or left it in the Bible. You'd think he would want to keep the item that set him free or make sure the warden found it ... really stick it to him. There was no reason to take it with you only to leave it in the creek where it might go lost. And how did he carve the pages in the Bible so precisely? 😉
Great reaction, big hugs
There would be no way of proving the order the bullets were fired.
That sum of money is worth just short of 4 million dollars today
Great movie and one of a few Stephen Kings novels that was not about supernatural things.
I demand more of that precious kitty!! 🥰🥰🥰
Her: He's such a cutie.
Me: Uh-oh
The irony for the Warden is that if he'd actually pursued Tommy's story and taken it to the relevant authorities then either
A - Andy gets a full pardon and never breathes a word about the money laundering etc... and the Warden gets to keep the money
Or
B - No one believes Tommy, Elmo Blatch denies it (or he's since died or cannot be tracked down etc...) and says Tommy is making it up. So Andy stays in prison for a while longer, before making his escape but he doesn't hate the Warden because at least he done his best to help Andy with Tommy's information. So when Andy does escape he probably doesn't send all that evidence to the papers. He just takes the money and goes to Mexico
Either way, things would have worked out better for the Warden if he hadn't been such a scumbag about Tommy's story
Instead of talking to the warden, Andy should have contacted his lawyer. I guess Andy thought the warden was his friend.
@@richardburdon3241 Yeah good point
Remember 370k dollars in 1966 is like 3.4 million today, so about 170k dollars per year
Written by Stephen King ❤
Im wondering how andy got the Pic back on the wall after he got behind it when he escaped
Great reaction. But there is no need for him to hide the gun because the gun would have proven him innocent. The whole reason he was convicted is exactly because the gun was never found.
I was still thinking there’s a possibility he was guilty. Game of thrones gave me trust issues!!
Lipps, if you liked this film, "The Green Mile" is an absolute must reaction. Your subscriptions will jump 100K.
I really wouldn't call it a must. It's a good movie but I watched it once and that was good enough for me. Too supernatural. On the other hand I've watched Shawshank probably 10 times and will watch it a few more. Never gets old.
The Green Mile you should watch next another Stephen King classic!!!
Fantastic reaction.....keep it up!
Great reaction :) It is my favorit movie.
Hello Lipps! If you want to cry a little while watching a good movie, then watch the movie "Hachiko". I'm really looking forward to your reaction to this film.
Fantastic Reaction!
Are you going to or have you already reacted to The Mist, The Green Mile, The Hurricane and 12 Angry Men?
What is $370,000 today a few million probably
Great reaction.
Top tip: Have the microphone actually facing towards you.
In 1968, that 370K of Warden Nortons money that Andy took, was actually worth 3.33 million-ish today.A dollar then, is worth around $9, in 2024.
Now we need the next steven king movie that everyone seems to do after this movie. The Green Mile. That movie breaks me every time I watch it.
it's on my radar but is so long I haven't found the time yet!!
