I use a rubber band (the postman leaves loads of them on the doorstep and down the street) double it, then stretch it over the headstock and then sit it behind the nut. Works a treat, for muting that ringing 'G' string on a Baja Telecaster...
You can wrap anything around the headstock, even a simple rubber ring will work (not a too thin one though). For muting when tapping it has to be a bit more solid, like e. g. a cloth ribbon. Absolutely no need to invest 35 €.
You can put a slice of polifoam under the strings, which is what I do. It's so subtle you wouldn't even visually notice it, but it's just as effective and cost you nothing. If you have a fixed bridge and/or a push-pull pot I recommend doing the same behind the bridge.
WOW Justin. Props to you for playing Joe Satriani's "Midnight". one of my fave songs of his . I agree its very hard to do 2 handed tapping like that without a wrap. When I played this many years ago I also used a SOCK! :) hahaha BTW, I Just saw him (Satriani) last night at the G3 show in LA with my fave guitar player John Petrucci of Dream Theater (fave band)!! Great stuff. I always wondered what those black wraps on everyones guitar was. Love the vids/channel. Keep it up!
I have a guitar where when I'm playing those kind of chucky chords and I lift up my finger I hear a kind of vibrating sound. I suspect its coming from behind the nut, too. Thanks for clarifying that, now I know I'm not the only one who has ever had this problem. At first I thought it was the frets, but on closer examination it was not the same thing as fret buzz.
All you need for the strings after the nut, is a small piece of black electrical tape. It is only about 1.4cm wide. Just put the tape of the strings as neatly as you can.
Cheers. Seen a few bassists using these things, and been entirely puzzled until now. Never been bothered by unwanted noise from the strings - but what's the betting I do now I know it's there?
Am I right in thinking you can move the fret wrap further up the neck as a sustain killer? For funk and such where you want the sound to stop-dead at the end of a stum?
You don't need to buy a fancy doodad to do that same job. Get some of those things that girls use to put their hair in pig/pony tails. They are $2 for a pack of 20 and they work great. Also, the springs on trems also cause sympathetic notes that will ring out like the headstock does. Stuff those with foam or cloth or something like that. Good to go!
You can put a slice of polifoam under the strings, which is what I do. It's so subtle you wouldn't even visually notice it, but it's just as effective and cost you nothing. If you have a fixed bridge and/or a push-pull pot I recommend doing the same behind the bridge.
Ironically, I came looking for this from a Justin Bieber Tiny Desk show and your name is also Justin. Not the first time I have seen it but first time I actually looked up what it was. Thanks.
I have been playing for over 40 years and this is something I have never heard of, I've known bass guitarists to use a piece\thin strip of sponge after and tight against the bridge to mute but never come across this, one never stops learning eh?
Hi Justin, would this work for clean playing..I play clean most of the time and sometimes on bends I catch the string above accidentally so wondered if this would help..
I'm excellent at string muting for electric guitar and bass. But I'm recording a song using a 7-string (which I rarely play) and I'm getting string noise on the plain strings while I'm playing a riff and chords on the lower strings. I'll have to try using something like this and see if it fixes the problem (which is why I came here). NOTE - One negative of using these mutes on Strats and Teles is that you won't be able to do behind the nut bends.
hi Justin I enjoy your videos.. just wanted to offer this pronunciation suggestion: pronounce Gruv as groove.. pretty sure that's what they were intending when they came up with the company name.. cheers mate!
I wrap an ankle sock instead of that, didn't feel like doshing out money for this. Might consider a good looking one since I'm gonna start going to classes with my guitar, so an old sock is quite embarassing :D
I was told that it usually a bit of a crutch for preforming live, but is very good for recording. Some guitar may need it, but I've never owned one like that.
I have a question. I have a Telecaster. When o bend the High E String, I can hear a faint high pitch sound produced by the pet of the string between the nut and the tuning peg. Is this normal on all electric guitars? Or is there some issue. I’m really confused.
Strings ringing out above the nut are usually a sign of a poorly cut nut or lack of down pressure to the tuners. A string tree or a nut adjustment would likely fix that.
Or, you could get more wraps around the tuner post which would increase the angle. I have this issue on my strat - I usually only get one to two words around - going to try three for four to see if it changes the angle enough.
in my opinion you dont need it on a 6 string because it you dont hear the sound that much (yes it has some 6 string guitars on that you could use them, but not that many :D ). I use them on 7-9 string guitars because the headstock is much bigger and you can often really hear that sound. i hope you can understand what i mean :D
HEY I THINK I LIKE WHAT YOU DO AND YOU ARE VERY GOOD PLAYING NEIL YOUNG. I PLAY GUITAR BUT NOTHING LIKE YOU I WAS IMPRESS WITH THE WAY YOU PLAYED THOSE NOTES WITH JUST YOUR FINGERS I WATCHED YOU MANY TIMES SO TONIGHT I SUBSCRIBED TO YOU HOPING WHEN I GET MY SELF TOGETHER I MAY LEARN SOME THINGS FROM YOU IT BEEN MANY YEAR PLAYING ONE YEAR AND NOT FOR TWO OR THREE YEAR . ALL HAD TO DO WITH WORK AND NOW I HAVE RETIRED I HOPE TO GET BACK INTO WRITTEN SONGS NOT REALLY THAT GOOD WITH CORDS I USE A CAPO TO CHANGE THE SOUNDS SOME TIME. BUT I DO LOVE SITTING OUT SIDE AND MY YARD AND PLAYING MY GUITARS I HAVE A MARTIN AND A KEITH URBAN AND MY FIRST GUITAR A GIBSON ACOUSTIC AND I HAVE A PICK UP I CAN PUT ON MY GIBSON GUITAR MY MARTIN AND GIBSON I HAD FOR OVER FORTY YEARS THE KEITH URBAN NOT REALLY SURE WHY I BOUGHT IT ITS NOTHING LIKE MY MARTIN BUT THEY SAY IT'S EASIER TO HOLD DOWN THE CORDS BUT IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER I NEVER WOULD OF BOUGHT IT BECAUSE THE BOTTOM E STRING HAS A BUZZ TO IT. I GOT IT FROM AMAZON. BAD CHOICE. ANY WAY ILL KEEP IN TOUCH AND WATCH YOUR SHOWS ON YOU TUBE I THINK YOU ARE A COOL GUY AND GOT MY ATTENTION. AS ALWAYS FOREVER YOUNG GOD BLESS BOBBY LEE 007.
I recently developed a bizarre Technic that makes the third string ring out at times when running scales I'm beginning to think it's the frequency range of the overdrive because it's never happened before anyway I do use my daughter's hair scrunchie but the GrubHub might be the way to go

I hear this weird ringing noise in my acoustic guitar when playing the open D string, espacially when playing an open G chord. Could this potentially fix that problem? :O Been to the shop and asked for help so many times and no one but me seems to hear this ringing noise... It's driving me crazy
I heard you say we should work on our string dampening, which I’m horrible at.... But in your (or anyone else’s) opinion, do you consider this cheating? Not necessarily in a recording or practice setting but live... or both or all three? I’m just a crappy player who plays at home, but I’ve seen these more and more and have wondered people’s opinions on it. Edit: I’ve seen Petrucci live 4 times and never saw him use one, but I’ve seen videos of him recording and using one... kinda where my question comes from.
nothing is cheating in music unless you are in a technical competition, the objective is sounding good nothing else, if something can give you a better result you should definitely use it
This not directly related but, my strat made a shrieking treble sound (awful) until I foam padded the 3 tremolo springs that are part of the floating bridge setup. These springs are under the cover at the back of the guitar. Stopped it immediately.
It's a guitar neck scarf -- for cold climates
Helps stabilize the neck
Win
My nut broke I'm crying cuz only half broke off and the first bottom string is like buzzing
it's a guitar neck brace, for post-accident neck injuries
You are all wrong, it's a cravat, his guitar is not injured, it just has great fashion sense.
Justin: "Two-handed tapping is not something I do very well"
Also Justin: *Plays two-handed tapping passage flawlessly*
He absolutely shreds it
it's nice more of you Justin, makes you seem more like a friend than just a teacher.

that explains things a bit more...l've seen Matteo Mancuso use one all the time and I've wondered what it was for. Thanks for posting
HA HA, I have a headless guitar!
Holy shit is that what the main point of the Strandbergs is? I never realized that lol.
Works really amazingly for an Acoustic too just feels more defined and cuts unwanted overtones
Finally! I have been wondering for so long
Dude!!! I played Midnight for part of my college audition! It’s cool to hear someone else has also!
I use a rubber band (the postman leaves loads of them on the doorstep and down the street) double it, then stretch it over the headstock and then sit it behind the nut. Works a treat, for muting that ringing 'G' string on a Baja Telecaster...
I've noticed more and more of these recently. Knew Justin had an explanation. Cheers.
Being a lead guitarist, I used cut down unwanted sounds when speed licking and hammering with a sweat band rolled half over and around the nut
Sounds nice, but at my standard music store these cost 35€ for a 3 pack, which is in my opinion too much for a piece of fabric
You can wrap anything around the headstock, even a simple rubber ring will work (not a too thin one though). For muting when tapping it has to be a bit more solid, like e. g. a cloth ribbon. Absolutely no need to invest 35 €.
e.g. Sport sweat wrist band will make the deal
A hair scrunchy I nicked off my wife does a great job. Cost 50p.

Thats what I do, its hardly noticeable and it costs nothing, any old scrap of foam will do.

Justin, you surpass every other youtube guitar teacher out there. Keep it up man! If i had a buck it give it to ya
I fitted a rubber nut to my guitars. works a treat.
You’re ‘avin a laugh!
Talking about it being registered by the pickups, go listen to the beginning of "Running With The Devil" for a an excellent example.
There are little rubber sprockets which you could feed the strings through. They would be more permanent but definitely less obvious.
hahaha thankyou so much, i always wandered about what is that.
College exam?? When are the videos coming out about your past?? I bet you got some good stories!
I'm proud to be one of the people who asked about this once.

I've always had question. Thanks! Think ill get one.
I just use it for the looks xD
If I'm correct it can also help quieten feedback or buzzing sounds from your amp.
i just bought it yesterday..will do some testing soon
You just answered my question. Thank you!

It's a NUT WARMER.

Nice, its a sweat band for your guitar lol, Thanks for sharing what that was, i love when i lean something new!
I bet these would work nicely to mute string noise on hollow body electrics between the bridge and the trapeze tailpiece.
I had no idea . Thanks!

Nice finger tapping, Justin! I'd like to hear more of these :D

what's that acoustic guitar device to help strings from falling out that goes on the bridge ?
Bridge pins?

Marko Docevski mono neon is probably the only person that can do that sock trick live and on stage. :)
Gotta buy myself one of those (Y)
I have an electric guitar and while tuning my guitar my other strings vibrate. Would you recommend me getting one of those to stop this issue?
I was told that it usually a bit of a crutch for preforming live, but is very good for recording. Some guitar may need it, but I've never owned one like that.

please do let him roll by guy clark it would be great.
Thanks for the lessons Justin! what is the reason some guitars have that noise problem? i have a guitar with the same issue but cant find an answer.
Anyone else think he sounds more as a friend than a teacher😅
Makes me think; should the nut-to-peg distances be designed to resonate at some particular frequencies?

It’s pronounced “Groove” but spelled Gruv. They do great at keeping down errant noise, I’ve always just used bandannas

Hilding Bjarnlid more than likely a high fret or incorrectly cut nut slot. Happens all the time on acoustics
greg howe uses a hair band. it works
why doesn't Yingwie, Vai or Eddie use them, and why did satch started to use a dampener vice?
Can i slapp the guitar?
(Pssst - it's "groove" gear even though they spell it Gruv.)
He said it’s getting picked up by the pick up😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Fret wrap sales are going to increase!!
is string dampener similar to capo????
Can you do for those about to rock by acdc
what size fretwrap do you use sir? is it small or medium?
When you were a little tucker?? Or summat else?
Would you use this on an acoustic?
You can also just use a hair band and it seems to work.
Oh what will they think of next!?...
Something useful hopefully.
An elastic band would have done the trick Justin. Saved a few bob too lol.
I use a dirty old sock, keeping it grunge
My socks are far too crispy
whats the guitar in the back?
Try Velcro one-wrap. Cheap. Look it up on ebay.
I'm looking for explanation on locking nuts and floating tremelos??. I think it's called
They do work
hey justin u live in Australia?

See the live streams!
I've owned dozens of guitars over the last few decades and never once have i experienced this so called issue (behind the nut noise).
I have three guitars. My g and d strings do it on my tele quite loudly on open cords. It’s not so called at all, it happens
I just put a blob of Blu-tac on the string behind the nut. Sorted
He says the fluffy hair tie I think he means a scrunchy
I use an old pair of underpants

i'll give it to you; that was a good one. xD
