    I use a rubber band (the postman leaves loads of them on the doorstep and down the street) double it, then stretch it over the headstock and then sit it behind the nut. Works a treat, for muting that ringing 'G' string on a Baja Telecaster...

    Sounds nice, but at my standard music store these cost 35€ for a 3 pack, which is in my opinion too much for a piece of fabric

    • @FTStratLP
      @FTStratLP 7 лет назад +1

      You can wrap anything around the headstock, even a simple rubber ring will work (not a too thin one though). For muting when tapping it has to be a bit more solid, like e. g. a cloth ribbon. Absolutely no need to invest 35 €.

      You can put a slice of polifoam under the strings, which is what I do. It's so subtle you wouldn't even visually notice it, but it's just as effective and cost you nothing. If you have a fixed bridge and/or a push-pull pot I recommend doing the same behind the bridge.

    WOW Justin. Props to you for playing Joe Satriani's "Midnight". one of my fave songs of his . I agree its very hard to do 2 handed tapping like that without a wrap. When I played this many years ago I also used a SOCK! :) hahaha BTW, I Just saw him (Satriani) last night at the G3 show in LA with my fave guitar player John Petrucci of Dream Theater (fave band)!! Great stuff. I always wondered what those black wraps on everyones guitar was. Love the vids/channel. Keep it up!

    I have a guitar where when I'm playing those kind of chucky chords and I lift up my finger I hear a kind of vibrating sound. I suspect its coming from behind the nut, too. Thanks for clarifying that, now I know I'm not the only one who has ever had this problem. At first I thought it was the frets, but on closer examination it was not the same thing as fret buzz.

  • @raymarsh4620
    @raymarsh4620 2 года назад +1

    All you need for the strings after the nut, is a small piece of black electrical tape. It is only about 1.4cm wide. Just put the tape of the strings as neatly as you can.

    You don't need to buy a fancy doodad to do that same job. Get some of those things that girls use to put their hair in pig/pony tails. They are $2 for a pack of 20 and they work great. Also, the springs on trems also cause sympathetic notes that will ring out like the headstock does. Stuff those with foam or cloth or something like that. Good to go!

    Hi Justin, would this work for clean playing..I play clean most of the time and sometimes on bends I catch the string above accidentally so wondered if this would help..

  • @sinnertrain7405
    @sinnertrain7405 3 года назад

    I'm excellent at string muting for electric guitar and bass. But I'm recording a song using a 7-string (which I rarely play) and I'm getting string noise on the plain strings while I'm playing a riff and chords on the lower strings. I'll have to try using something like this and see if it fixes the problem (which is why I came here). NOTE - One negative of using these mutes on Strats and Teles is that you won't be able to do behind the nut bends.

  • @eeshangomes9721

    I have a question. I have a Telecaster. When o bend the High E String, I can hear a faint high pitch sound produced by the pet of the string between the nut and the tuning peg. Is this normal on all electric guitars? Or is there some issue. I’m really confused.

  • @jakeobney3508
    @jakeobney3508 2 года назад

    Does this work with floating bridge where the strings are locked at the headstock? Or do you not need it

  • @JimDaddyo
    @JimDaddyo 7 лет назад +3

    Strings ringing out above the nut are usually a sign of a poorly cut nut or lack of down pressure to the tuners. A string tree or a nut adjustment would likely fix that.

    • @davearooney
      @davearooney 7 лет назад

      Or, you could get more wraps around the tuner post which would increase the angle. I have this issue on my strat - I usually only get one to two words around - going to try three for four to see if it changes the angle enough.

  • @thehermeticgnostic66

    in my opinion you dont need it on a 6 string because it you dont hear the sound that much (yes it has some 6 string guitars on that you could use them, but not that many :D ). I use them on 7-9 string guitars because the headstock is much bigger and you can often really hear that sound. i hope you can understand what i mean :D

    I heard you say we should work on our string dampening, which I’m horrible at.... But in your (or anyone else’s) opinion, do you consider this cheating? Not necessarily in a recording or practice setting but live... or both or all three? I’m just a crappy player who plays at home, but I’ve seen these more and more and have wondered people’s opinions on it.
    Edit: I’ve seen Petrucci live 4 times and never saw him use one, but I’ve seen videos of him recording and using one... kinda where my question comes from.
