    A girl at my barn asked to ride a mare I do barrels on and I looked at her and said “No you have two other horses to ride” and she said “I can’t ride one because the barn owner said not to” and I said “that sucks, ride the pasture horse or the barn owners horse she does barrels on” the next days she pulled out that horse she wasn’t allowed to ride and I said “oh what happened to you not being able to ride him?” And she said “oh I can today”

    I did have to step in and offer some advice recently... a family with no horse experience was sold an almost two-year-old Spanish Mustang colt. To train themselves. The mom and young teen son were trying to lead the colt but he was literally pushing them in circles, nipping their arms when they tried making him move. The boy was holding the 4-knot halter tight under the chin, keeping constant pressure on the face even when the colt was standing still--which was rare, as he kept tossing his head trying to leave the pressure. I'm no expert, but after a bit, I just couldn't help myself-- though I did ask the mom's permission first.
    The colt isn't mean, and he ain't dumb! Soon as I got close, he tried shoving me with his chest and nipped my arm and it didn't take him long at all to realize I was boss mare and to be standing quietly, on a loose lead. Then he stepped into their space and they immediately flinched and backed up, so I had each of them back him up a couple of times. And I pointed out to the mom how she was giving him positive reinforcement by hugging and scratching him when he stopped walking and got "stuck." She thought she was comforting him because he must be scared. I had her back him up a step or two then walk forward again and she was amazed at how much better that worked than hugging him... it's kinda scary when I think back to when I got my first horse (the best horse ever!) and realize how little I knew, and how close I came to messing her up!

      Unless people are doing something really bad it's best to bite your tongue but sometimes you just have to tell them! I had to take a young girl to one side and quietly tell her that she had her horse's Kimblewick in upside down. Poor horse. Goodness knows how long she'd been riding him like that.

      Sorry I had to do it as a barn manager, trainer and behaviorist. There is no such thing as a boss mare, alpha or dominance in horses.
      The hierarchy is entirely resource based, who eats first, who breeds first and who is strongest.
      There is no ruler or boss. Only a older more experienced mare who knows the paths, watering holes, defense tactics and grazing areas.
      Anyway good job helping out the newbies. ❤️

    The “horse borrowing” is why I left my first barn for my second barn to board at. Unfortunately, Barn managers often either don't do anything when you tell them someone took your tack/grooming supplies/first aid supplies/personal property or they tell everyone not to do it and it keeps happening anyway. Because there are no consequences since that other boarder pays money too and often is not seen doing it or it otherwise can't be proven. This is why I Hate shared tack rooms with a passion. I'll keep my stuff in my trailer if I have to.

I say "sorry" And go and ride him myself but only for like 10 min, cuz the Karen's took time off of my scheduled riding time by yelling at me..... We had maybe 12 horses whose stalls were set up so that you could see them from the driveway, so the family started looking at them and speculating about which ones were thoroughbreds, except they weren’t even basing their guesses on actual facts. My favorite comment was that one mare “can’t be a thoroughbred” because she’s gray...? (looking at her she’s obviously NOT a thoroughbred but that’s not why I think that). And then there was the part when the dad asked me what type of races our horses do. We jump. He was not interested in that.

    Someone "borrowed" my bridle once and didn't return it. I made it known through word-of-mouth that I was offering a generous reward ---- not necessarily for the return of the bridle, but instead for the NAME OF THE PERSON that took it. Funny how once word got out, my bridle magically and mysteriously reappeared again a few days later.

      I saw someone using my saddle. The weird part was, the saddle was fitted for my draft horse so it didn’t even fit her horse! When I told her she literally said”it’s just a saddle there’s more in the tack room”. Like, wth

    I don’t know why people make such a big deal about sharing horses. I’ll let basically anyone I know ride my horse anytime they ask and most of my friends would do the same back. The only time I get it is if you have like a green horse or barley know the person.

    • @radchannel5494

      A horse can be finely tuned to your cues, like a musical instrument. It stresses the horse for someone different to ride him. It wouldn't kill a horse to have a strange rider. although a strange rider on one of my horses might get themselves hurt. I have found that frequently a strange rider on my horse cannot get them to perform their best, usually because they don't use their seat and leg aids. My horses will tell on you if you ride like a sack of grain.

      @@radchannel5494 I have a well broke horse that can do basically anything. English, western, bareback, swimming, you name it! She loves it when other people ride her and she responds well to any type of cues. Leg cues? Great! Seat cues? She does amazing! Maybe a less experienced rider who uses the reins a bit more? She responds the same. I can see your situation if you had a green horse or were the only person to ever ride the horse. However, my horse was trained by multiple people and has learned a lot. It's the same for many other horses too :)

    • @radchannel5494
      @radchannel5494 3 года назад

      @@kennedy3636 A great compliment to the training of the horse, if anyone can ride it. However, you will still frequently find that some can more easily step a horse up to its optimal performance than others. A simple fact. And perhaps the eyes observing are not as critical, and so the horse looks wonderful to all. Not a bad way to be.
