  • One year on, we look at the luthiers tool chest that I built in preparation for my move across the Irish Sea and compare working from it to working with a tool wall. Plus, we go on a magical mystery tour inside all of the nooks and crannies of each drawer as it appears in my day-to-day life.

    Sean,
So nice of you to come back after abandonding me here waiting for you at the shop. I waited and waited hoping you would return. It rained and got cold then snowed but I never waivered. I stood firim in my resolve to wait until your return.

Hobbyists woodworker here, been a machine tool woodworker for 35 years (a Disciple of Norm) but have in the last 15 years been turned on to hand tool woodworking. I’ve been mesmerized by some of the amazing “tool walls” on RUclips but am leaning towards a traditional English tool box possibly on top of a rolling cart with drawers in it to bring the height up a bit (I’m apparently not getting any younger, which I must say is seriously annoying;) great video and nice kit !

Really cool to see the tools of the trade! Some of dad's tools make a lot more sense now 🤣 if you're ever home and bored fancy making an equine version of the chest?? my car looks like a tack box exploded 😂

Home and bored don't often go together I'm afraid, I'm lucky to even get home at all!

Maybe the compromise between the tool chest and the tool wall is a toll cabinet. I think that the main advantage of a chest is that if it has a lock, it gives you more security, but of course, if someone really wants to steal, it would do it anyway, but an extra step gives you more time. Nice video.

Luckily security isn't that high on my list of priorities. Where I am is very secure and the people are honest. A full size tool cabinet would be a lot of fun though! I love seeing the ones on RUclips that people have built.

I'm glad to see the Purple Heart dust that I donated to you last year at Crimson going strong 😃

Of course, it's been brought out a few times, but never for anything too bad. Interestingly it also makes a good filler for the likes of inlays too.

What if you built a modular companion tool wall to go with the chest? Maybe you could make it so it can attach to the sections to the chest with some type of clips or straps. Just enough tool wall sections to display your more commonly used tools? I know if anyone could figure this out, you can. Love your work brother.

I love the chest by the way.

Even something like a "tool wardrobe" would work well. Heck, even take an old wardrobe and convert it! I currently really like the chest with a wall section nearby. Less mobile for sure, but that's also not the biggest requirement

Yes, a wardrobe would be nice, I was just thinking of turning your chest into a modular system with like a chisel board, plane trays and miscellaneous tool section that all strap to the chest to preserve the mobity you have now. Iove that chest. I remember watching the video when you first made it. Really great Sean. Peace brother.

Hey Sean, thanks for this. I smiled when you talked about using the hand drill for those small holes. Makes me laugh when I see someone using a 20v drill/driver for such a small job, and then using that same drill/driver to drive in tiny screws!
I still use my Dads drill (and others of his tools). Somehow they give me a sense of peace when I use them, almost as if Dad's still with me.

Oh no, I sweat when people use the big drills on screws. One slip and the screw gets knackered! Especially guitar screws, they seem to be made of cheese.
I absolutely agree about using parents/grandparents tools. When there's history, they seem to work much better

I thought about this, but at the moment height is the enemy due to a guitar hanger right on top of the chest. Maybe in the future, I think it would be a great addition!
