Simple DIY overflow system using a breeder box

I've made a simple overflow box using an old breeder box. Flow rate of this overflow is full dependent on the size of the siphon bridge. The bigger the pipe, the better flow rate you will get.

Great video! I was gawking at the prices for the overflow boxes on the market. They have a remarkably similar build to hang on back filters (both plastic and tubes in a hanging configuration, one has a motor and the other a tube where the hole would be), but the cost difference is insane. Hoping to make these to kit out a freshwater fish room without drilling holes into the aquarium. Very glad to have found your channel today (the stream tank looks amazing).

Hello, which direction does the check valve go? I have done your method with an old HOB with a weak pump. To make the siphon quicker, I added the airline with suction syringe. However, if i put checkvalve with arrow going downward to block water upflow, the suction from syringe does not work to draw water flow up the inlet of HOB. How can I stop water from upflowing through the airline, while being abke to use syringe? Thanks!

Take the timing of the overflow to fill up a bucket (eg 5 liters). Divide the time taken by 120 seconds/60 mins. Take the value and multiple by 5L. U will get the flow rate of eg.4500L/Hour

@dankmemes8039 yes anything slowly should be fine. U can always add a ball valve at the overflow to control the flowrate and match ur pump. It will take some time to find the right spot

becuase i read online that as long as the return pumps flow rate is greater then the overflow boxes flow rate it should be fine becuse the overflow box wants to keep the same level of water as the tank - is that true?

I think its otherwise? Because if ur return pump is faster. It means ur sump tank compartment that houses the return pump will be empty faster, as water going into ur sump tank is slower.

What flow rate can be achieved? I'm looking for 2000lph. Also does the bulkhead drain make noise?

I'm sorry I didnt measure the flow rate, but i guess anything larger than 32mm diameter should be able to achieve 2000 LPH. U can try to make a durso standpipe to have a quiet overflow.

No, only once is required. As long as the pipe is properly primed, there shouldnt be any more air trapped inside

Yes flow rate will be slower for this setup as it is not an actual siphon. But if the bridge is bigger between the tank and the overflow tank. You can try to get back the flow rate that you desire

Does the siphon bridge only control flow rate or the size of bulkhead also? I cannot achieve 3000l per hour with 1 inch pvc I have to turn my pump down
