Billie Holiday - It Had To Be You (Clef Records 1955)

- "It Had to Be You" is a popular song written by Isham Jones, with lyrics by Gus Kahn, and was first published in 1924. The song was performed by Priscilla Lane in the 1939 film The Roaring Twenties and by Danny Thomas in the 1951 film I'll See You in My Dreams.
The lyrics explain why the singer puts up with a domineering partner. The reason offered is depth of attachment: "somebody who could make me be true, could make me be blue." However, domination itself may be the attraction: "some others I've seen might never be mean, never be cross, try to be boss, but they wouldn't do." The singer concludes: "nobody else gave me a thrill ... wonderful you, it had to be you." However, the lyrics can be interpreted as a realistic and bemused commentary on the reality of attachment, a recognition that the beloved is not perfect but has significant flaws which can be tolerated and accepted because of her (or his) virtues. While "It Had to Be You" is not unique in taking this stand about romantic love, it does counterpose itself to the dominant pattern in the Great American Songbook of celebrating the beloved as a perfect angel. In any case, the complicated melody, minor chords, and ambiguous lyrics make this a classic torch song.
Billie's accompanied by Benny Cater (alto sax), Artie Shapiro & John Simmons (bass), Larry Bunker (drums), Barney Kessel (guitar), Jimmy Rowles (piano), and Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet). Recorded August 23, 1955, Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California. (Clef Records)
It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around, and finally found, the somebody who
Could make me be true, could make me be blue
And even be glad, just to be sad, thinking of you
Some others I've seen, might never be mean
Might never be cross, or try to be boss but they wouldn't do
For nobody else, gave me a thrill with all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you, it had to be you
It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around, and finally found, the somebody who
Could make me be true, could make me be blue
And even be glad, just to be sad, thinking of you
Some others I've seen, might never be mean
Might never be cross, or try to be boss but they wouldn't do
For nobody else, gave me a thrill with all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you, it had to be you

I hope not too soon. I also hope that the remainder of your time here is filled with a lot more joy and that you find some peace and some more fun times from here on. Cherish the memories but don’t let the loss hold you back from enjoying the rest of your time on this crazy planet my friend.

Sorry for your loss. May she RIP 🌹🌹🌹🌹
She had a hard life... You hear the melancholy in her voice. I think that's one reason so many of us relate to Billie.
Couldn't agree more...
I once read a quote where she said she always wanted to be a mother and a wife. Now I always wanted to be a blues singer. But that didn't happen.
I got married two days ago. We chose this recording for the processional and it was absolutely infectious, beautiful, and befitting. I've been listening to it on repeat ever since. Best version of the song.
She had a hard life. Drugs. Men. Cops. But with that voice there's a spark of who she wanted to be. Let's just say she's looking down knowing people will love her forever.
Love these old billy holiday songs. You don't hear music like that these days.
It's out there! Just not on the radio....try apps like Bandcamp or even SoundCloud!
I'd like to hear music like that with the ambiance and stuff :)))
100% correct

She was so amazing despite her horrible problems. She was unique. God bless her soul.

Its a rainy today...and I am listening Billie...to sooth my soul.
This still shows Lady could still reach great heights even by this stage in her life and career - beautiful.
so beautiful it hurts.
The unique sound of Billie Holiday accompanied as always by a superb musical group. A great era of music.
no one did this song justice like ms. holiday.
The woman breathes new life into this song (and, indeed, EVERY song she touches). THANK YOU.
Oh my....I really get emotional when I hear this cut. Sounds like Lester on sax. It doesn't get any better than these two together.
Benny Cater on Sax 😎
The most distinct voice of the Jazz divas ❤️
She touches my soul with every note😍

Awesome song, awesome version of Billie's and an awesome year - When I was born!!
Fantastic lady. Always have and always will think she had the best vocals of all.
This song sung by this wonderful lady makes you fall in Love all over again!
This queen of Jazz/blues' voice got better as she aged. 🤔 Incredible. She and the other wonderful Jazz pioneers make me feel like I was born a few centuries late. I enjoy every tune.
Not true! She lost her voice! But a few later songs are still great!
A few centuries late? Billie Holiday was born April 7, 1915, and died on July 17, 1959. She was just 44 years old.
Amazing
Beautiful!
Hello 👋 Diana
How are you doing today?
May you sing among the Angels now for you left us such treasures!!!! I love you Bille ❤️

I love her version of this song. So distinctive, so Billy.
Billie holiday performing incredible songs
I was 15 when this album was released and was smitten with Billie. I was president of a Joni James fan club and was not surprised when Joni told me her musical heroines were Sarah, Billie, Ella and Dinah. Billie's albums at that point were getting hard to find and her Columbia masterpieces nearly impossible to find. A few years Columbia began reissuing everything in gorgeous boxed sets and Decca had put everything it had out on 12 inch LPs. Heaven! Billie loved recording for Norman Granz on Clef and Verve because he let her sing the way she felt, gave her the best musicians for accompaniment, and helped her select the very tip top quality songs. Granz even let Billie rerecord songs for him within short periods of time because he knew every record of every song would be different. For example she did two killer versions of "Say It Isn't So" that were chilling. I have some tapes of the Verve recording sessions and it is fascinating to hear Billie schmoozing with other jazz greats, suggesting new ways to do a song and very happy because she was in her element. She never imitates any other singer even though almost every other singer was imitating her and willingly admitting it. There are some Peggy Lee records on Decca where you'd swear you are listening to Billie and Peg recorded several songs because she so loved Billie's recordings of them. Though known now as a tragic, down on her luck walking trainwreck, Billie in real life was happy, amiable, sociable and enjoyed a great night out listening to great music and, well, drinking. She was a very thoughtful, kind and socially conscious lady of regal bearing, one reason she was known as Lady.
I just can't believe Dinah was such an influence. I mean come on, I know she was popular and all but those dresses, that Southern twang, those "See the USA" commercials...yikes!
TeachinTV I think he's referring to Dinah Washington, not Dinah Shore.
TheBilliefan Extamente. Dinah Washington did much of her recording here in Chicago and the musicians who worked with her said she was easy to pie to work with because every take of every song was just remarkable. She loved to chat with the musicians at sessions. As I remember Bob Shad did some of her producing and admired her greatly. Sarah was incredible. Mercury would lay these extravagant two-LP sets for her, 24 to 26 songs, and she'd come in never even heard many of them and just put them down pat on first try. I have the complete recordings of her show tune album including outtakes and she is a riot, joking, complaining and singing like an angel. I have a lot of Diana Ross outtakes and at heart she really is a jazz singer; it is fascinating to hear how she tries something different with every take without making a point of it. She is, at last, working on a new album.
TheBilliefan Oh. Sorry. Never mind. (GOTCHA!)
Thank you for sharing your story there.

Hello 👋 Elena
How are you doing today?
My girl! 😆I'm such a fan, everything Lady Day sang just floors me.😰 Every time I think I have all her cds I need (and I have several), I find yet another song she kills me with! 😭'Love her music! 'Such a tragic life, but a true survivor till her untimely end. What a treat it must have been to see her onstage (I was born in'58; she died in '59😛)! Still, thanks to RUclips, and it's generous contributors,😚😚😚😚 we all get to enjoy what was, time and again.👍👍👍👍
I was born in 54....would have LOVED to hear her live!
What a solid lovely voice.
I listen to the Lady when I was a child and did not speak or understand a word of english. Just her voice and the sound took me in then and never left me since. I dared to live a life outside every convention and although it was very painful at times,, I did it.
"with all your faults, i love you still"
Tobin
Better look at your faults!!! You don't even deserve to hear one tune of her!!!
