  • Houndtor Medieval Village is one of the most famous deserted medieval villages in England. This film, including new research and input from members of the Moor Medieval Study Group, tells the story of the medieval origin and abandonment of the site and celebrates the contribution of a pioneering female archaeologist to the understanding and conservation of Dartmoor’s heritage. Including interviews, medieval and 1960s re-enactment, this film explores the contested Houndtor landscape.
Part of the Moor than meets the eye Scheme and made possible with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, special thanks goes to the many fantastic volunteers who took part, RAMM Exeter, Historic England, English Heritage and owners of Houndtor Down.
This fascinating site is under the care of English Heritage. Find out more at www.english-heritage.org.uk/v...

This is rather strange because I've already seen this video...twice, actually...and yet has been uploaded for a third time. It was quite interesting the first time but...!!! ;)

Perhaps it is to underline the importance of this place.

More of Dartmoor and less of the people who dug it up would have been good!

Why do these irritating ladies feel they have to sound so convincing?
It's like they're talking to children.
Would much prefer a straight approach with information about why the place was evicted or abandoned.
That's the heart of the story here, not the people who rather amateurishly dug it up in the 1960s.

Hi Robert, thanks for watching our film. You raise an interesting point. As is so often the case with archaeological sites, there is usually no straightforward explanation, only the interpretation of evidence. Mrs Minter added greatly to the story of Houndtor, although her interpretation has since been re-considered by archaeologists and historians.

I agree. I wanted to know more about the tors, not some determined ladies.

Some one has spent a lot of money on this, the production seems a little over the top! An interesting story indeed, but not quite so epic!
