  • Dartmoor is justly celebrated for its Middle Bronze Age archaeology which consists of entire preserved landscapes of settlement and the remains of agriculture in the form of extensive field systems; the famous ‘Dartmoor reaves.’
Join National Park archaeologist Dr. Lee Bray in an exploration of the evidence for this fascinating period and what it can tell us about the communities who lived here at this time.
Reaves appear in the archaeological record in the centuries around 1,500 BC after two and a half millennia during which the most enduring human features in the landscape consist of monuments associated with ceremony, ritual and the dead.
This was an online talk organised by Dartmoor National Park as part of a programme of monthly talks bringing Dartmoor's incredible heritage to you in the comfort of your own home.

Watched this straight after watching Tony Clark’s live talk. Absolutely fascinating, learned so much about the features I walk past so regularly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and theories about what the evidence means.

Thank you for sharing this video and discussion. I've very interested in the Bronze Age Bell Beaker people who migrated to Britain. My theory is the roundhouses were sealed after a cheiftan died. That's why some roundhouses were sealed and some became Cairns. I wonder if anyone has excavated under the large stone in the center of the roundhouse? If so, were there any bones found?? Have any burials been found under the hearth of the roundhouses??

1:08:49 it’s far more likely that the unseated elongate stone simply fell over guys 😂
