I had the incredible priviledge to study and get my degree under Willie Maiden @ the University of Maine in Augusta . Willie was an astonishing genius and composer. It was so magic to have this time with him. He told me once to study those music books and scales and all that then forget that stuff and play. 27 years with Maynard Ferguson and recorded several LP's with Stan Kenton. It was Stan that told me Willie pasted away. He died in a VA hospital in Van Nuys of cancer in 1978. Love you Will
I also attended UMA music program during '73-'74, I often heard and saw Willie playing and talking jazz. the man lived and breathed it. He had more Jazz in his little finger than I have ever possessed in my 57 years. Chuck Winfield from Blood Sweat and Tears was also teaching there at the time. That school was a swinging place back then !
I was fortunate enough to see Willie Maiden many times with the Ferguson orchestra during the '60s. I still have those recordings on Roulette which are now digitized. Every time I listen to them I can picture, in my mind, Willie stepping to the front of the bandstand to solo. He had an amazing sense of humor which was evident in his music. It was always about the music with him. Always the music.
Willie was a musician's musician. I participated in UMA's Jazz program in '75-'76. Shared a year of Willie's life in private sax lessons -could never make my bari or alto sound anything like his magic, but he heavily influenced my understanding and appreciation for jazz. He was a visionary that passed too early, but he planted many seeds in his short time. Thanks Willie!
This is fantastic from a Kenton fan in Scotland, i thought i have seen everything filmed on kenton.lucky to see band in1972 in london and meet him.Willie Maiden the best, thanks for posting the best thing on utube, any more ????
And now, it's 2018. I remember willie Maiden like it was yesterday. UMA...the New Years Eve in Belfast thru the snowstorm...lots of snow storm gigs, Waterville, Augusta, Portland. 1970s Erased, but saved.
"Play YOU, Now!" I was lucky to be a player in several of Willie's bands while he was at UM Augusta, Maine. I was a most talented, and inspiring musician and marvelous writer and arranger. We traveled all over Maine together. I loved him madly...still fell his presence while I play.
I have finally seen my grandpa Willie at his finest work.

"Learn to forget"
Willie Maiden
Charlie Parker
Jim Morrison
Sage isn't an adequate word...
This video is a small treasure. There is too little known about Willie Maiden; too little written, too little filmed.
WTF? LOL
