Also, he bought that OS to build upon as a time saving measure, not because he wasn't capable of doing it himself. I'm not some Bill Gates fanboy, but I think you're discrediting unfairly. At least in regards to this particular event.

Tim Patterson wrote the first version of the program to work like the CP/M operating system but run on Intel 8086 processors, which the IBM PC used. Gates paid $75,000 for the code and then struck a licensing deal with IBM, which needed an operating system. He simply called it MS DOS. Bill basically invented drop-shipping.
Tim ended up working at Microsoft as part of the MS-DOS development team and later worked on MS Visual Basic.
No Tims were harmed in the writing of this post.
Except he also was writing computer programs from 13 y/o, had his first software company at 17, had 1590/1600 on the SAT and graduate MCL from Harvard. But yeah, “not the most intelligent person”.
Missed a couple details on Bill Gate's introduction to IBM, his mom connected him with the CEO through her business relationships, and he was not the foremost expert on software development, he was and is an expert on contracts and using the patent system to his advantage.
How the hell was he an expert on that stuff at such a young age

A lot of people are completely lost when they turn 18 because their parents never taught them about adult life or any kind of career-related knowledge. Bill Gates WAS taught that career-related knowledge, and made excellent use of it.
@@nothinleader A vast majority of major breakthroughs, innovations, and advancements, in history, came from relatively young men. They then spend the rest of their lives building upon that. Sure, an older guy, overseeing the young bucks doing the work, might get the glory, but the actual work and innovation generally comes from the youth who don't know "that thing can't be done".
Also, IBM was in a legal war w/ the DOJ so MS got a much better deal from them than otherwise would've been possible (i.e. IBM would've never licensed DOS let alone let MS sell it to competitors).
Give credit where credit is due. Sometimes the best of the best are not known because they fail to rise up for many reasons. Bill Gates was and has always been a software genius even in middle school.

The us military can use more advanced controllers, and do for drones such as a reaper, but for smaller more conventional drones they found that soldiers are more comfortable using Xbox and ps3 controllers and find it easier to remember “combos” rather than a vast array of controls. According to a vender at a Association of the United Stares Army event.

in 2002 i was in tanks , we where looking at a new top of the line tank that just came in and it ran windows NT , i was mindblown , i didnt actually think microsoft where patching windows to be military i thought it was the tank developer

In 1981 I was working with GM Defense Products for the program office supporting engineers doing R&D for what was to become the Stryker light armoured vehicle shown several times in your video. According to IBM, I purchased the first PC/IBM 5150 built with Microsoft operating system through a bulk corporate buy I set up. I audited IBM’s in-service file for warranty purposes and we got about the first 40 before another purchaser got one and they became a hot item.
Having lawyers as parents growing up really pays off in business later.

5:17 The USS Yorktown in this instances was not an Aircraft carrier, it was a Ticonderoga Class Guided Missile Cruiser. CG-48, which was taken out of service in 2004 and is currently being dismantled for scarp. The two Carrier Yorktown's haven't been in service since 1942 when USS Yorktown CV-5 was sunk after the Battle of Midway, 1970 when USS Yorktown CV-10 was decommissioned.

I just watched two of your videos; this one on Microsoft and the other on Bolt after RUclips recommended them. I have to say I am really impressed with the quality of your videos, they are incredibly well structured, informative and engaging. It goes without saying I am now a subscriber, I have no doubt you'll reach and exceed a 1 million subscribers if you keep up the quality of your videos.
4:39 - 4:59 they could have developed similar point and click environment for their linux system if they wanted. but that graphical GUI was always more heavy for resources. i think windows 11 now requires something like 8 gigabit of ram to work smoothly. and they could have custom-built their linux rock solid, in-house, never crashing. army could have owned their own licensing.

thats not the reason. its the case of privatisation vs gov effort. gov expects better performance from the private sector and at the time there werent many in that sector who could supply the government with their requirements. Sure linux was around but someone would have to develop not only the GUI but the interface to many of their systems and keep it a secret, so they would have to break open source licenses in the process. This means that they have to privately handle updates to the OS instead of just updating the OS whenever there was a new release. In comparison windows NT wasnt just used for warships but other CPU architectures and was the precursor to the modern windows desktop and server OS we use today. You will find a windows NT 4 for sparc which is one of the systems used in the defence industry as sun not only developed sun solaris but hardware that dealt with number crunching stuff and had GPUs that rivalled the best of consumer AGP slot GPUs.
I have one of the old sun sparcs used in oil and gas, some of the components are modular in trays like the CPU and PSU. They were into ease of maintenance before it became a cool feature in desktop consumer cases too. Sun based their OS on unix and the longetivity of a company is important. IBM would only develop for their hardware and were a vendor who enjoyed locking others in. Sun didnt stick around long enough, granted their hardware was used in a lot of places and software too and had impressive server hardware that no x86 based manufacturer around ever made. 8 slot multi hundred core servers were around using sparc from sun long before today with hardware encryption part of the CPU long before AES went into intel/AMD. I remember drooling over sun servers long ago, with their $100k price tag. todays 96 corex2 multi hundred MB cache AMD servers cost $20k at least. not only that but sparc could handle up to 8 threads while intel/AMD SMT can only handle 2 threads.
I wonder that would be the impact of recent aquicisions (IA) in this military enterprise.

Hi Great Video, but i noticed a small mistake. You mentioned the USS Yorktown was an Aircraft Carrier. When infact the Yorktown in question (Yorktown CG-48) was a cruiser. I really dont blame you bc there are 4 Yorktowns and one was a carrier but i just wanted to put this right. Keep up the good work love your videos :)

@@notapplicable4567 The new Bing isn't even out publicly though (unless im wrong and it is lol), so no one has a reason to get it. I personally have switched from Brave (well duckduckgo on brave) to (the developer version of) Bing, and I actually like the look of it, and the new Bing chat can actually be pretty useful. However I do not think we will ever go from "I'll Google it" to "Ill Bing It", I'm pretty sure Google has been immortalised in that regard.

Bill Gates was not the most knowledgeable person in software at that time. Gary Kildall and his company Digital Research were the foundation in personal computers. When IBM approached Bill, he told the to speak to Kildall. Bad timing and circumstance is why eventually Gates stepped up to IBM.

From what I understand MS projects with the US military yield zero to little result. The latest big contract they have with the US military seems to be providing some cloud computing service and that is also splitter between other big companies. They don't seem to have any technological edge other other companies. Even though MS might have a long history with the military, but I don't think that can make them anything close to a military empire either.

I worked with MS. I worked on the proposal that won the JEDI deal. MS has a considerable workforce just focusses on military. I can't disclose numbers, but the team that focuses on military apps and cloud is as big as any other super-big company.

5:17 That wasn't the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) that was affected in 1998. USS Yorktown (CV-10), the WW2-famous Fighting Lady, had long been decommissioned by then, since 1970.
The USS Yorktown referred to in the incident was the Ticonderoga class cruiser CG-48. It served as the US Navy's testbed for the Smart Ship Program from 1996. The incident provided good lessons to the Navy and to the automation development community.

As of 2023 Microsoft has the contract for electronic security for Ukraine. They are also prepping to launch digital ID’s and digital currencies there aka social credit system.

With just a little more information this could’ve been a great video. The military isn’t ran off of excel. It’s ran off of Outlook and Power Point. Microsoft’s a more diversified company over AWS and Google and now with Microsoft leading the way with AI Search (that wasn’t mentioned) Bing is getting a lot of traction. The Ivas and Hololens projects were large but never a contender with Azure, everything that Ivas and Hololens did was done on Azure. Also you kept bringing up Bill, while he was obviously amazing and drove the company to new heights. Satya put thrusters on Microsoft and put it into space with where he’s brought the company. This was a very lackluster watch

I feel like I'm not even that old but I've lived through most of this and this video just feels like someone reading a wikipedia page. Windows was the only choice for the military. They had a monopoly until the 00's. It makes no sense to be like "In the mid 90's the military had to choose an OS between Linux and Windows" when Linux in the 90's was absolute dog shit. It was really a question of whether they were going to dump billions building an OS specifically for the military at a time when most of the talent was at Microsoft. Even after losing the monopoly lawsuit MS still managed to be a giant in the tech industry. It's like watching a video on how much influence a monopoly gives without understanding that it is a monopoly.
The $22bn they got for IVAS are probably several orders of magnitude above of what they put into that project. And I guess they'll continue to milk the military for further funds.
To me IVAS looks like an upgraded version of the _Zielgerät 1229_ from 1944. Upgraded, because _Zielgerät 1229_ only had a (rather compact) 13kg backpack while IVAS features a (bulky) 20kg backpack.
Oh well, IVAS can run Doom. _Zielgerät 1229_ obviously can't.

I lived in Palo Alto and Mountain View in the 90's. I knew a few people in tech. It was a routine thing for companies to come into existence and develop a product far enough that it became concern or interest to Microsoft, Sun, Oracle so Microsoft or one of the others would buy them out and either adapt it to Microsoft or kill it. That still goes n today except it includes Google, Amazon, Apple, etc.
How many promising technologies died back then which could have changed tings with a bit more development or an angel investor. Angel investors weren't always angels they would buy in and pitch it to Microsoft so Microsoft would buy it and do whatever they wanted with it resulting in a tidy profit. That still goes on today.
What solution would you provide?
