Ass, grass, or cash, bruh...
Hey Sal, I thought of an idea for a video that I thought would be fun for the channel. You guys've been doing this for a while and I've always been curious about how much Ben and Ethan have actually learned about comic books since they started doing Back Issues. So how about testing their knowledge in a sort of quiz game where you ask trivia about comics, characters, chronology, sagas, events, obscure references and backstage stuff that you've covered here on Back Issues. I think it would be pretty fun to see how much they've actually taken from this show and how much more aware they are of the comic book industry as a whole.
Ben and Ethan Jeopardy would be hella fun
Mano Veneza *Sal (thinking up a lesson plan for Ethan and Ben):* “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in...”
That'd be great lol. I hope he sees this
Yoooooo I am 100% for this idea!
That'd be pretty rad actually
Back Issues and the Explanation of One Classic Book
42:59, that’s my issue with a lot of Oracle, Nightwing, or any Bat family member going solo stories, they talk about and try SO HARD not to be Batman, they end up doubling down and being extra Batman
We all promise not to become our parents until we grow up and take on their traits. That's some relatable shit, Barb.
Huntress loves the question, and love for that man is unrequited
@Naquin Green They're never really a couple, but they team up a bit in Batman/Huntress: Cry for Blood, and Helena works with the next Question in Question: Pipeline. Both by Greg Rucka, so apparently he also liked seeing the two together, even if not romantically.
@@HollowGolem Huntress and Question were a thing in Justice League: Unlimited. And their 'romantic' talk is hilarious.
Huntress is in love with The Question, that was my favorite ship from the animated series
“Real”. Love it! Shots fired Comic Pop!
Gotham: Come for the Bagels stay because you can't leave
I love that Savant will be played by Michael Rooker in Suicide Squad 2. It’s casting that is both really strange but I’m all here for
“Bird and Prey”, you guys crack me up 🤣
"It's 2020! All your dreams will come true!" Yeah, speaking from 2021...
I feel those shots fired on "Gotham" were actually about NYC. It had me laughing 😂.
This is bound to be so much better than the movie... I can't wait to reread the comics. ❤
I saw the trailer and I didn't know who was playing which character. No joke. I couldn't recognize any of the characters (except Harley Quinn). That's.. not a good sign. X-Men films they changed the costumes, but you still knew who everyone was.
"it should have been Bird AND prey" lmfao
45:28 The canary cry's got nothing on Sal. XD
The last time I was this excited when first waking up, I... never mind
I really like these episodes where Sal throws the team into a book like this, where there are characters they have no context for or no interest in. I'd love to see a Blue Beetle episode, or maybe a Booster Gold episode.
I didn't ecen know the movie was coming out until a week or so ago
But I must say, as always, I LOVE THIS SHOW! you giys are the best
This is what the birds of prey film should have been and not " The emmancipation of one harley quinn".
Except DC never even planned to make a Birds of Prey movie, they wanted a Harley Quinn movie and it was Margot Robbie, the one who was funding the damn thing, that said "I wanna make it Birds of Prey"
@@8Bitnoobgamer ok then. To me it still feels like Harley quinn has more of a presence then the birds of prey themselves.
@Naquin Green i agree with u 100%
@Naquin Green absolutely since Catwoman will be in The Batman movie
@Naquin Green that's why she became producer for this movie
As a New Yorker the Gotham commentary in the beginning felt too real😂😂😂
I feel like the movie is a mashup of the cancelled Joker and Harley spinoff, cancelled Harley solo rumored Gotham City Sirens, and Birds of Prey.
ComiXProvider FTW_02 Gotham City Sirens and Birds of Prey weren’t rumored and were both in development. THR reported in May of 2016 that Birds of Prey was happening and it was untitled with Batgirl and Birds of Prey reported as being in it. Margot Robbie was attached as a producer. That was almost a full 3 months before Suicide Squad came out. GCS was in development afterwards in December of 2016 with David Ayer choosing it over Suicide Squad 2 since he wanted to do a movie with 3 women as he explained at Comic-Con in 2017. It’s not a mash up of those 3 movies which were all separate. There was also supposed to be a solo Jared Leto as Joker movie. Margot Robbie was always attached to Birds of Prey and being a producer meant it was going to happen first.
@Naquin Green I watched the movie and canary , Cassie got more screentime 2nd to Harley . Huntress got less but Mary Elizabeth played her well
It’s always a good day on Wednesday when Back Issues gets uploaded :)
Hey cool! I sent you guys this book. Glad it came in handy!
Sal just a minor correction in the tv show "Birds of Prey" batman actually left gotham after the death of catwoman, Barbara's gets paralyzed, and a final battle with the joker. Cause in the season finale alfred talks to bruce on the phone to give him updates on his daughter.
Daniel Douglas um actually
But who cares though?
@@Yungtacosss Me apparently. That was my first introduction to the Birds of Prey and huntress when I used to watch WB has a kid before it switched to the CW. The series holds a special place in my heart.
@@thetreeshaker4143 actually what? lol
👍
omg! Please do more birds of prey stuff!
It's one of my favorite teams and black canary is my favorite female superhero. 😁😎
I absolutely LOVE the Birds of Prey, they are one of my favorite superhero teams in comics. I especially love Gail Simone's runs, she is one of my favorite writers. But yeah love it so much. I'd recommend doing Sensei & Student the story after. Its very fun and Black Canary takes more center stage, with her mom's old case, her budding frenemy relation with Shiva and her dynamic with Cheshire.
Also they also get Lady BlackHAWK to be a BIRD of PREY. Lol! Honestly I kind of saw it as Black Canary is the bird with Huntress bring the prey/predator angle.
This definitely sounds like a book / series I should read.
In the BoP TV series, Batman wasn't dead. He had just left Gotham. I was a big fan of the Batgirl and the Birds of Prey title by Julie Benson and Shawna Benson, which ran for twenty-two issues as part of the DC Rebirth. I hated to see it end.
Yeah, some of us only watched the pilot over a decade ago.
I will say where I live on tv there is a commercial for that movie every commercial break for like a month
i get it every few videos on youtube and a lot on facebook
The Birds of Prey Earth was destroyed in the CW “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover.
RIP Earth 203. 2003-2020
i would love if they brought the show back
Yes! Early episode before work. 👍🏼
Ben: Ass, grass, or cash.
Me: This checks out.
I have a weird feeling that the movie is going to all be a hallucination inside Harley's warped mind.
No, Harley Quinn has a better imagination than that, and the characters would look much better.
Yay Birds of Prey! One of mine and my wife's favourite comic teams. Hopefully we'll get a proper version of them on screen one day.
Yes, Ed Benes is known for super cheesecakey drawing. But on the other hand Gail Simone is known for leaning into that style of writing as well and so I think she was happy to have him drawing. I do like this Birds of Prey and I really liked what Simone did with Black Canary in this run (she is my fav female DC character). She really plays up Black Canary's martial arts training, to the point that Lady Shiva wants her to take her place, that arc was really interesting to me.
I love the original birds of prey its a fun series and tons of fun
Nothing like listening to a new back issues while studying for finals ...thanks for burning the midnight oil with me comic pop!
I used to come home after work at night, looking forwards to this show.
Now I get my groove on before work and goddammit if it aint sweet!
also huntress/oracle + dick was missed
“...don’t do that, by the way...just call Uber.”
The actress that played huntress in the birds of prey show cameod in the crisis on infinite earths crossover as earth 203.
See the reason I liked The Birds of Prey back then was because you rarely get to see Female Superheroes being best friends with each other. Like, this was the female equivalent to Superman/Batman or Green Arrow/Green Lantern. Legitimate friendships are fun to read about in comics and I feel like nowadays it’s done with women characters to lead into a romantic relationship or its to fit a quota.
yep. you rarely ever see characters just be friends without them getting paired up lmao
with female characters its pretty much always to lead into a relationship or its unrequited i dont mind harley or ivy being bi but i hate that theyre together
Oracle's excuse for not immediately calling Batman is stoopid. She just didn't call Batman because she doesn't want him to find out that she screwed the pooch. She risking her friends life and possible ability to ever walk properly again for her own ego and I'd be extremely disappointed if someone doesn't eventually call her out on it later in the series.
Nice review of my all time favorite comic book series.
Although I think it would have been worth mentioning Oracles reluctance to seek help from the Huntress, was from the time Huntress took on the Batgirl mantle without permission. And also that one-night stand she had with Nightwing..... It really was a desperate call.
28:00 Nice Babel fish reference, Ben
Bout damn time we get some Gail Simone on Back Issues. Her Batgirl run was also excellent. One of the best writers of her generation IMHO
Your discussion of the zeppelins and whatnot in Gotham at the end got me thinking of Terminal City, by Dean Motter. Have you read that? You should do a show on it.
Is this the first Gail Simone book on Back Issues? If so not a much better place to start than her Birds of Prey run.
It's arguably her best written comic book run, except maybe her Wonder Woman run.
@Naquin Green Those were hard times being a Wonder Woman fan. But you're right, Gail Simone brought the character back to prominence.
It's lunchtime all the time in the DC Editors corner
Definitely enjoyed watching this before I went to see the movie in theaters 😂
Keep them coming!
Just waiting now for age of rock and dark night metal and Donny cates thanos
Oracle is the woman who knocks
Aw ye new back issues, best part of a thursday morning
Getting rejected by history's most popular orphan would cause anyone to snap.
I can just see DC putting Black Canary and Oracle in a lesbian relationship.
- Barbara: "Dinah, I appreciate the enthusiastic efforts... but I'm literally paralyzed from the waist down"
Great episode guys. I watched this episode before I saw the movie. I have to say the BOP movie is alot of fun.
It has been said (I think by even Gail Simone herself), that Gail SImone did want/intend Black Canary to be bisexual and even was going to kind of come out in an off handed remark saying she's "70% Hetero" before it got changed on her.
Am i the only one when i saw the title for this episode "real birds of prey" was expecting/hoping a comic about eagles, hawks owls and the like? No, nobody? ok then i will just go to my corner then
Anyone else notice the phone vibrating? 6:04 lol
what is Ethan referencing at 5:12? it sounds so funny to me.
You know this title alone is going to piss so many people and I lot ComicPop for it.
Should’ve just reposted Mad Love because the movie entitled Birds of Prey is about Harley Quinn’s complicated relationship with the Joker 🙄
After hearing you say there is no hype for the movie I checked the numbers and the first trailer has 21 million views and the second trailer has 8.7 million. I think it will do well enough.
yes but i find it hard to say anyone likes it and anyone who does seems to be seeing it for mary elizabeth or margo robbie
Don't think the trailer had a positive reaction. None of the characters are remotely recognizable (except Harley Quinn).
@Sal are you gonna do any of the Justice League Unlimited episodes like Ep. #14) Cat and the Canary (the introduction of Black Canary), Ep. #19) Double Date (which is where Huntress is introduced, we get her origin, and she meets Black Canary), Ep. #35) Grudge Match (where Black Canary and Huntress team up to save the women of the Justice League) on Savage Screen for the Birds of Prey movie too?
I saw a birds of prey trailer before IT Chapter 2.
I watched the movie . I thought it was great I would have not seen it if Gail Simone herself didn't praised the movie
I was expecting a look at Quinn’sfirst New 52 arc, yet this is better. I see Harley’s role in BOP as a double edged sword- she ain’t a hero but the Birds of Prey r a great concept for non comic fans to see, so put her in. Also her new look doesn’t work.
I was rewatching Gatti Ward 1 highlights (the best boxing match ever) while its slow at work but turned it off for this. Cause sal and the gang are equally bad ass as two complwte gladiators in peak condition going at it with the strength of warriors
I need to rewatch Bronson... Atopping myself before I go on a typing tanget
Just how awesome is Savant if he is overtake by a person, as skilled as she is, with 2 broken legs and a broken wrist? 😂
So whens Gotham City Sirens? 😂
Personally: I feel Bruce and Selina SHOULD have had the daughter child ❤ NOT Talia Al'Gul with Damien Wayne. Screw Grant Morrison for feeling otherwise.
Why not both? How would Damien react to having a little sister?
The marketing for the movie probably whent over sea. I live in sweden and see the ads all over stockholm
Hey Sal.. what did you think of the movie?
It has some Marketing budget, it has TV spots but not like a ton of them
I'm seeing Birds of Prey sometimes soon. It has a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Wait. That's not how cruise control works?
Oracle is great in dcuo
Please do Ultimate X-Men next
Wasn’t Savant in the new 52 suicide squad episode? And why do I remember that?
Maybe "Birds" was being used as the British slang for a female??? Maybe?
The thing with Canary and Barbara is even sadder/funnier when at one point Gail wrote a line that had Canary saying "I'm at least 75% straight" which got changed without her knowledge to being "I'm heterosexual to the bone". Queen can't even be Bi it's a cruel world out here.
Are we the audience, fans of the real character/teams, the allegorical Harley to Warner Bros.’ Joker? Slapped around on every date (movie) waiting hopelessly while they continue their doomed obsession with Batman (money)?
The only issue is Joker is what we actually wanted
Birds of Prey is good. Harley Quinn used to be good.
@@komickid833 Hate that she got turned into female Deadpool
@@komickid833 Well that and they tried to make her into something else aside from a villian which always ends up a bit messy
@@komickid833 Nah, her original origin, BTAS, had her join forces with the Joker of her own will. She fell in love with him believing that he was misunderstood. Granted, he used his usual tricks of deception, but he never planned for her to break him out jail and help him for a while. She made the decision in the original origin, recent origins had her manipulated by him.
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH YESSSSSSSSS! 😍😍😍🤯🤯
Let's go forward 🤣
Better than the movie
Who’s excited for the Birds of Prey movie?
I saw a little bit of the show a couple of years ago. It was so terrible I gave-up after the first few episodes. The combination of that and the fact that the DCEU movies are unwatchably bad, I'm probably going to sit this one out.
I really hope the movie is good. It can't be worse than the show... right?
Well me and gail simone loved it
@@ryanmadej6694 Good to hear!
I don’t know why everyone’s so shady about the movie coming out. There’s is no single comic book movie that is 100 percent accurate so of course it’s not gonna be a straight 1 to 1 from the comics. From the reviews this movie looks to be really good and it even got the seal of approval from Gail Simone herself. I’d say give it a chance and see it with an open mind.
Naquin Green While that is a valid criticism of the movie, we don’t know the future for Cass’ character in the DCEU. She very well could become Batgirl or she could just stay the same she is now. I personally don’t really mind this change because this is no different than the Gotham by Gaslight comic (IIRK) and animated movie making the Robins into street urchins. This is just a different take on Cass’ character
It's the fact the charactes are so different in appearance. I had no idea who was playing what character until I looked at IMDB. That's not even 50% accurate to the comics. X-men, they changed the costumes but you KNEW who Cyclops, Storm, jean Grey, Wolverine and Xavier were instantly.
So I saw it with an open mind, as you requested.
No bueno, my dude. 2/10
Virgil Barrios And that’s fine if you didn’t like it. All I asked was to see it with an open mind. I don’t have a problem with people disliking the movie if there is some actual criticism. I do have a problem however when their criticism amounts to “Wooman no show boobie me PP stay soft sjw boogie man happun agan”
Paulafan5 I actually didn’t have a problem with the costumes. I felt it fit well within the confines of the story. In the movie Huntress and Canary aren’t crime fighters yet so it makes sense they don’t have their crime fighting costumes, so instead they’re fighting in street clothes (like Canary) or that stealth suit (Like Helena). It’s shown they get their costumes at the end and there’s definitely upgrades happening down the line in either shows or movies that could happen (like how the hero suit changes every movie or so for heroes in the MCU)
Great episode. This is a very fun book. As Sal said, it's a good springboard into the run. I also agree that Benes' art is very gratuitous. I'm not the biggest fan of his style, but that oversexualized, Michael Turner/Aspen style of art has never been for me. It gets much better near the end once Nicola Scott takes over.
Love Nicola Scott's art. She was great on the Earth 2 series for DC.
aaaaaaaaaaaaand the movie was shit...)
how about we see the movie before judging it
lol How about nobody is seriously judging it at all? That there isn't a single bit of speculation about the movie not being good at all, and the only thing someone said that was slightly negative was the long title? How about that?
